It’s a mystery.

Sometimes at Badass we get a great dog in and, for reasons we’ll never understand, it just takes a little longer for them to find their perfect family.  Two recent examples that come to mind are Chance and Carole, both adopted now and living awesome lives with devoted families.

Syria: Opposition Abuses During Ground Offensive

Opposition fighters in Syria apparently executed civilians and others in their custody during an offensive in the Christian village of Sadad from October 21 to 28, 2013. Other civilians were also killed unlawfully by opposition sniper fire. Civilians killed by opposition shelling, as fighting between government and opposition forces in the village continued, may have been killed unlawfully.

During the offensive against government forces in Sadad, 100 kilometers northeast of Damascus, rebel fighters refused to allow residents of the village to leave their homes in areas with active fighting, residents told Human Rights Watch. In at least one case, fighters allegedly used a resident as a human shield. Residents also said that opposition fighters also stole personal items, and vandalized, stole, and damaged property in at least three churches of local and historical significance.

"A German law takes effect today that establishes a third gender option for parents filling out birth certificates for newborn babies. They can choose ‘indeterminate’ if the child shows both male and female characteristics. The parents will make that choice by leaving the boxes for male and female genders blank. The new law is meant to avoid the need to label an intersex baby as male or female before the child is old enough to decide.

The child could also opt to remain classified as intersex. German passports ‘will soon be allowed to have an ‘X’ in the gender field…”

Syria destroys all chemical weapons production equipment Reuters: Syria has destroyed all of its equipment for producing chemical weapons, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons says. "The OPCW is satisfied it has verified, and seen destroyed, all declared critical production/mixing/filling equipment from all 23 sites," a document from the group said.

Helping Disaster Victims With One Simple Text

Meet Marian Croak, the woman who invented the donation-via-text technology that helps us give to charities during natural disasters.

It’s been a year since Hurricane Sandy ravaged the East Coast, destroying homes, taking lives and decimating the Eastern seaboard. During the natural disaster, donations to relief agencies and charities poured in from across the country via text—a technology that proved essential in the immediate aftermath of the superstorm.

It’s a simple and yet revolutionary idea, born out of the tragedy of another hurricane seven years prior, when AT&T’s Marian Croak witnessed the misery in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and felt moved to help. She developed and patented the donation-via-text message system and made the technology free to use without licensing or fees. Since then, organizations such as the Red Cross have relied on Croak’s invention in earthquakes, tornadoes and other natural disasters. For her ingenuity, she was just honored with the 2013 Thomas Edison Patent Award.

Saudi Arabia: Free Journalist who Supported Women Driving

Saudi authorities should immediately release a male journalist who expressed support for an end to the ban on women driving in Saudi Arabia. Officials should also stop harassing and trying to intimidate activists and women who defied the ban by driving on October 26, 2013. Local activists reported that more than 50 women defying the ban drove on October 26, according to messages they received from the women and videos women uploaded to YouTube showing themselves driving.
