Been on a redrawing old sketches spree so here's another Chilumi redraw of an old sketch I had in my files🐳✨
Redraw of my first ever Chilumi drawing from 4 years ago🐳✨
Can't afford art school?
After seeing post like this 👇
And this gem 👇
As well as countless of others from the AI generator community. Just talking about how "inaccessible art" is, I decided why not show how wrong these guys are while also helping anyone who actually wants to learn.
Here is the first one ART TEACHERS! There are plenty online and in places like youtube.
📺Here is my list:
Proko (Free, mostly teaches anatomy and how to draw people. But does have art talks and teaches the basics.)
Marc Brunet (Free but he does have other classes for a cheap price. Use to work for Blizzard and teaches you everything)
Aaron Rutten (free, tips about art, talks about art programs and the best products for digital art)
BoroCG (free, teaches a verity of art mediums from 3D modeling to digital painting. As well as some tips that can be used across styles)
Jesse J. Jones (free, talks about animating)
Jesus Conde (free, teaches digital painting and has classes in Spanish)
Mohammed Agbadi (free, he gives some advice in some videos and talks about art)
Ross Draws (free, he does have other classes for a good price. Mostly teaching character designs and simple backgrounds.)
SamDoesArts (free, gives good advice and critiques)
Drawfee Show (free, they do give some good advice and great inspiration)
The Art of Aaron Blaise ( useful tips for digital art and animation. Was an animator for Disney. Mostly nature art)
Bobby Chiu ( useful tips and interviews with artist who are in the industry or making a living as artist)
Sinix Design (has some tips on drawing people)
Winged canvas (art school for free on a verity of mediums)
Bob Ross (just a good time, learn how to paint, as well as how too relax when doing art. "there are no mistakes only happy accidents", this channel also provides tips from another artist)
Scott Christian Sava (Inspiration and provides tips and advice)
Pikat (art advice and critiques)
Drawbox (a suggested cheap online art school, made of a community of artist)
Skillshare (A cheap learning site that has art classes ranging from traditional to digital. As well as Animation and tutorials on art programs. All under one price, in the USA it's around $34 a month)
Human anatomy for artist (not a video or teacher but the site is full of awesome refs to practice and get better at anatomy)
Second part BOOKS, I have collected some books that have helped me and might help others.
📚Here is my list:
The "how to draw manga" series produced by Graphic-sha. These are for manga artist but they give great advice and information.
"Creating characters with personality" by Tom Bancroft. A great book that can help not just people who draw cartoons but also realistic ones. As it helps you with facial ques and how to make a character interesting.
"Albinus on anatomy" by Robert Beverly Hale and Terence Coyle. Great book to help someone learn basic anatomy.
"Artistic Anatomy" by Dr. Paul Richer and Robert Beverly Hale. A good book if you want to go further in-depth with anatomy.
"Directing the story" by Francis Glebas. A good book if you want to Story board or make comics.
"Animal Anatomy for Artists" by Eliot Goldfinger. A good book for if you want to draw animals or creatures.
"Constructive Anatomy: with almost 500 illustrations" by George B. Bridgman. A great book to help you block out shadows in your figures and see them in a more 3 diamantine way.
"Dynamic Anatomy: Revised and expand" by Burne Hogarth. A book that shows how to block out shapes and easily understand what you are looking out. When it comes to human subjects.
"An Atlas of animal anatomy for artist" by W. Ellenberger and H. Dittrich and H. Baum. This is another good one for people who want to draw animals or creatures.
Etherington Brothers, they make books and have a free blog with art tips.
📝As for Supplies, I recommend starting out cheap, buying Pencils and art paper at dollar tree or 5 below. If you want to go fancy Michaels is always a good place for traditional supplies. They also get in some good sales and discounts. For digital art, I recommend not starting with a screen art drawing tablet as they are usually more expensive.
For the Best art Tablet I recommend either Xp-pen, Bamboo or Huion. Some can range from about 40$ to the thousands.
💻As for art programs here is a list of Free to pay.
Clip Studio paint ( you can choose to pay once or sub and get updates. Galaxy, Windows, macOS, iPad, iPhone, Android, or Chromebook device. )
Procreate ( pay once for $9.99 usd, IPAD & IPHONE ONLY)
Blender (for 3D modules/sculpting, animation and more. Free)
PaintTool SAI (pay but has a 31 day free trail)
Krita (Free)
mypaint (free)
FireAlpaca (free)
Aseprite ($19.99 usd but has a free trail, for pixel art Windows & macOS)
Drawpile (free and for if you want to draw with others)
IbisPaint (free, phone app ONLY)
Medibang (free, IPAD, Android and PC)
NOTE: Some of these can work on almost any computer like Clip and Sai but others will require a bit stronger computer like Blender. Please check their sites for if your computer is compatible.
So do with this information as you will but as you can tell there are ways to learn how to become an artist, without breaking the bank. The only thing that might be stopping YOU from using any of these things, is YOU.
I have made time to learn to draw and many artist have too. Either in-between working two jobs or taking care of your family and a job or regular school and chores. YOU just have to take the time or use some time management, it really doesn't take long to practice for like an hour or less. YOU also don't have to do it every day, just once or three times a week is fine.
Hope this was helpful and have a great day.
"also apologies for any spelling or grammar errors, I have Dyslexia and it makes my brain go XP when it comes to speech or writing"
Boosting this in case any of the programs and books suggested are useful.
All the photos on this tumblr ad the animal photo reference site I run is another resource available for artists to use!
As long as you’re not using AI to create your art, you can reference / trace / draw / recombine / make any sort of art you want, with any of the photos, for free.
There's also MORPHO, a really good book series on anatomy by Michel Lauricella, with very clear explanations and sketches!
And for pose references, there's @adorkastock who shares a ton of them for free, with different models and props, and her website is amazing <3 you can also buy pose packs from her.
hi hello i am curious about the tangled au in the chilumi art that you posted recently 👀
hey hiya just so you know you just opened a can of worms so don't be alarmed as I go on yapping about this au~
So this au is mostly still something of a work in progress. I've drawn it a few times for chilumi fan-event weeks (fairytale week last year and chilumi week just a few weeks ago) and most recently cuz I rewatched Tangeld and the brainrot started eating my brain inside out.
But I really wanna flesh it out more!
For the most part, I haven't thought about changing the story too much from the Tangled storyline. The big beats would be similar. I initially just started out with "I wanna see how chilumi would look like in this setting" cuz I love trying to incorporate their original designs into different settings and au's.
~oOo~
Now hold my beer lemme yap about the designs for a bit
For Lumine, I wanted to keep elements from Rapunzel's outfit while making it look more Lumine-esque, taking inspo from her game design.
I ended up settling with a dress design that looked very similar to Rapunzel's dress in the movie, but made the colour scheme more like Lumine's game design colours.
Here, you can find some of the notes about the design:
There were elements from Rapunzel's design that I knew I wanted to keep, since they add to the story. For instance, the way her dress skirt hits an awkward length on her calf (As well as the mid-forearm length of her sleeves) that indicate Rapunzel has been wearing this dress for so long, and even as she essentially outgrew it, Gothel hadn't given her one of a more fitting size.
Hence, I kept the skirt-length for the au's Lumine.
There are other details that I could go on and yap at length about, like making au's Lumine's hair fluffier/wavier, the little cut on the side of her dress, the sleeves, etc, but imma leave it at that for now. I'm sure this post will be lengthy enough as it is.
~oOo~
For her post-hair-cutting design, I've only recently made that one, so there's a slight chance I might tweak it later as I flesh this au out more (same goes for the pre-hair-cutting! As it stands though, I'm happy with how it looks~)
In a similar vein, her design looks more like Rapunzel's on the whole, while her colour scheme takes after Lumine's design.
And again, here is the design sheet with some notes about the details:
-> For both the pre- as well as the post-hair-cutting designs, I just want to point out that Lumine here has a slightly darker skin-tone than her au counterpart and Rapunzel. This is something I wanted to play with, as Rapunzel and au-Lumine had both been locked away in the tower, while Genshin Lumine is an adventurer who spends her days out in the sun. I headcannon she looks a bit tan because of that (to be fair, any skin shade that isn't glaring white would make her look darker than her in-game model but I digress), and hence, I thought it'd be fun to keep the au's Lumine a bit paler to indicate this difference in the time each of them had spent in the sun lol
~oOo~
I'll leave Childe's design for now, as I hadn't made a proper sheet for him yet. All in all though, it's kind of the same process I had when making Lumine's design, where I wanted to keep the general look of the movie's Flynn/Eugene, but still Childe-ify it using his in-game design.
~oOo~
AND NOW FOR STORY STUFF
As I've mentioned earlier, the story on the whole, so far, is fairly similar to Tangled's. I'm an artist, not a writer, so don't expect big deviations and smart genshin-lore incorporations into the story from me.
However, there is an element that I'd love to add and explore in the au:
Aether.
I think there'd be such a fun dynamic to explore there; the prince who's still on search for his lost twin sister. Both of them had been born with that magical hair, and I think there's something very fun about having him leading the search parties and hunting after Childe after he steals the crown.
(Ignore the horse I'm still playing with the idea of making him scaramouche lmfao)
Not to mention, there's this scene idea I'd really love to draw. Essentially, it's after Lumine and Childe arrive in the kingdom, and after Lumine gets her hair braided. Childe steps away for a moment (getting pasteries or food or whatever) and when he comes back, he sees her standing behind a fence wall. Curiously, she had taken the flowers out of her hair, and he leans on the wall fence, asking about the flowers, only to realise-
You know what? Fuck it. Here's the scene sketches
This scene is the product of a late night brainrotting and my mind going "how funny would it be if Childe mistook Aether for Lumine while they are in the kingdom out and about lmao"
I also think it'll be fun to draw the scene of Lumine seeing Aether and feeling confused at how familiar he looks, at his hair and its length and colour and all the ways in which he reminded her of herself.
And also! The scene of them finally meeting after Lumine comes to the castle. That momentary confusion. No, we're supposed to be identical twins. What about her hair- her hair? What happened to it? How? When? Why? Who? (R.I.P Childe)
I think there's so much fun to be had with Aether being part of the au lmao
~oOo~
I still have so many brainworms but imma leave it at this for now. It's 4am and I'm not making sense to myself anymore lol
Is there a reason you made lumine brunette in the tangled au? Btw they both look SOOOOO cute I want to put them in my pocket 🫶🫶
Thankyouuu they have my whole heart! Drawing this au is always so fun <3
Tbh making her a brunette mostly had to do with design and story aspects, both going off what the movie Tangled shows!
I was initially toying with the idea of making Lumine brunette in her long-hair form, and then that it'd turn blonde after it's cut, so that she'll end up looking closer to her game design. BUT I don't think it would've looked as good. It'd be hard to make the brunette hair glow in the same way the golden one does, so design-wise, for the healing power aspect, it made more sense to me to stick to the Tangled design choices of changing the hair colour post-cut.
For what it's worth, during the colouring, I did make a version that had Lumine with her usual blonde hair! Here they are side by side~
It's just that, somehow, the brunette one felt more right. I can't quite explain why, because the right version looks so much more like Lumine. She's herself, she's recognisable, she looks good. And yet, I kept going back to the brown hair layer until I eventually decided to roll with it.
I guess another reason though is that I love the way the hair plays a role in the movie a lot, both its length and its colour, so I wanted to keep that in this au as well.
Now to get more into the nitty gritty I'm-overanalysing-these-things type of reasoning, I think it also made more sense story-wise.
I've seen many people discuss how her hair's length directly ties in with Gothel's control over her. Her hair is the reason Gothel steals her, and then is the reason she feeds to Rapunzel as to why she can never leave the tower. It's what she tells her people will harm her for, and what she tells her they'll only ever value her hair and never love her for anything else (the call is coming from inside the house lol). It's the length of it that makes it so hard to walk around once they are in the kingdom, and despite the solution being so easy (i.e. braiding it), Gothel never does it, as it keeps Rapunzel clumsy, the length of her hair becoming a way to infantalise her. So I feel like the length aspect of it is a given and talked about plenty~
What I do wanna yap about is the hair colour! I feel like there's much to be said about the hair colour and the choices made regarding why this colour specifically, and why it's so important that it changes at the end of the movie.
The fact that her hair turns brown after it loses its powers, and her parents' hairs being brown (At least the mom's is!) all points to Rapunzel being a brunette from the get-go, but it was due to the flower's powers that she was born with golden hair. Of course, it's golden because the flower originated from a drop of sun, so it's essentially golden like the sunlight.
But then, gold as a colour also symbolises many things, among which bless, power, riches, beauty and materialism, all of which I think are relevant here! The healing power being a bless bestowed on Rapunzel, but it's also this power that is the target of others' obsession with materialism; there's Gothel, of course, but also the Stabbington brothers, who evidently want to take advantage of the hair and make riches off of it and all. And then there's the fact that in many places and throughout the world, blonde hair is considered a beauty ideal (many reasons for this, among which its rarity, association with youth, divinity, vitality, etc). That being said, Gothel does use the hair as a way of bringing down Rapunzel's self esteem, both in terms of how she looks and in that others would only ever care about her for her hair. I can also go on about how appearances play a role in the control Gothel exerts over Rapunzel, and how the mirror in the tower comes into play there, but I'll be going off-topic alksda
When it comes to the ending, one can say that Eugene's frantic cutting of Rapunzel's hair is a visualisation of breaking free from Gothel's grasp and control (and I say visualisation, because it's not something that happens solely in that scene, and saying so would give Eugene all the credit for something that Rapunzel has been undergoing and partaking in throughout the movie. From the moment she steps out of the tower to follow her wish, she starts to undergo that change and starts to think and question the bubble Gothel has kept her in. It's just that the hair-cutting scene shows a visual representation of the culmination of something that's been building up so far)
And I think something similar can be said of the change of the hair colour. I think it shows another kind of breaking-free, this time from ideas and ideals. It's why I love Eugene's line "did I ever tell you I've got a thing for brunettes?" so much. It just shows that he doesn't care about all those ideals of power and beauty that her hair held. He cared for her, and for her, he was the first to show her that she could in fact be loved and valued for who she was rather than what she had and could give.
I love that thematic aspect of the movie; this subtle theme of appearances and the vanity of obsessing over them, and this is why I wanted to keep something similar in this au by giving Lumine brown hair post-cutting as well! To me, it's such a meaningful part about the movie that I wouldn't want to change out, even if it meant giving Lumine a less-cannon look. In a way, as it stands, I've distributed her original design across the au's looks; her long-hair self gets her cannon hair colour, while her short-hair self gets a different colour but the same hairstyle (cuz I imagine that hairstyle would totally by possible with the way her hair gets cut~)
Aight I've yapped so much and it's currently 2am so I have no idea if any of this actually made sense though. If not then oops but just assume I chose to make Lumine brunette off ✨vibes✨ which is actually half of the reason lmao
