Fictober Day 31

Prompt: “I trust you” Original fiction: SK Online Rating: G

Ryo had only ever met one person from SK Online in real life, and that hadn’t exactly gone as planned.  He’d gotten a date with a girl, and while it hadn’t been a case of someone faking who they were, it had been a... lackluster experience.

Although in this case, he wasn’t going on a date.  And Kaze seemed mostly nervous about it, even though they weren’t the only two meeting up to discuss the weird occurrences in the game.  They’d all traded phone numbers, and the night before, Ryo had found himself texting with Kaze.

Or, well, apparently his real name was Haru.

Well, Ryo didn’t think he was impressive, he’d mostly gone for aesthetics that would get attention from girls.  But apparently Haru liked it.

Fictober Day 30

Prompt: “Just say it” Original fiction: SK Online Rating: G

The summer festival event had seemed like an awesome idea at first to Ryo and Haru.  Get some exclusive gear for doing well, and be able to bring it out every now and then just to show they’d been there for newer players.

And then everyone started going around in skimpy swimsuits.

“I... don’t think this was really worth it,” Haru said, his voice hesitant as they both looked at their bounty from the special battles.

“Just say it.  All that work and we get speedos.” Ryo was already in his inventory, deciding if he wanted to trash it or not.  “What the hell were they thinking this time?”

“Well...” Haru was already watching a group of girls in the bikinis that female avatars won from battles.  “I can think of one thing.”

Ryo rolled his eyes.  “Yeah, yeah.”

“What, you don’t want to watch cute girls in skimpy swimsuits?  Are you sick or something?”

It took Ryo a few seconds, but he finally shook his head.  “Nope.  Just don’t get off to anime.”

“You’re a better guy than I am.”

Fictober Day 29

Prompt: “Back up” Original fiction: SK Online Rating: G

It wasn’t that far into exploring when Ryo realized there had been a battle not long ago.  SK Online didn’t immediately repair the landscape after a big one, mostly because the staff had realized that a lot of people liked taking screenshots of their victories.  Usually things were stable.  Usually.

“Back up!” He reached for Haru, but his friend was just out of reach.  A piece of the building they’d been exploring fell on him, and Haru was gone.

Ryo sighed and brought up the in-game messenger, waiting for him to appear online again.  He got a message before he could send one himself, though.

Kaze: Well there goes my dignity

Cadmus: Really?  A one-hit kill?

Kaze: Crushed me right into digital dust.  Meet you back in town?

Cadmus: See you there

Well, he had some trekking to do.

Fictober Day 28

Prompt: “Do I have to do everything here?” Original fiction: SK Online Rating: G

Yui had played plenty of battled with Yuuto and Yukiko, but that was mostly just them, or teaming up with people they knew.  As the healer, Yukiko had to be in sync with her teammates or she wouldn’t really be able to do her job.

It wasn’t going so great this time.  And Yui had found herself having to clean up after more and more of them as they ran to the sidelines and waited for Yukiko to heal them.

“Ugh, do I have to do everything?” Yui asked.  The boss monster had shown up after they took out the last wave of enemies, but even if she was level fifty, she couldn’t take it on her own.  Yuuto had managed to get through as well, and he looked over his shoulder.

“I think Shepard is getting pissy,” he said.  “Uh, have you ever seen rules about friendly fire?”

“I mean, you can technically do it if you want but-“ Yui winced as she heard the telltale crack that meant one of their team had been knocked out.  “Remind me not to get on her bad side.  Ever.”

“Noted.”

Prompt: “Give me that” Fandom: Fire Emblem: Three Houses Rating: G

It took some convincing to get Yuri into one of the seminars for bows, but he excelled at it as soon as Byleth put a bow in his hands.

“...you’re awfully good at this for something you’ve never done,” he said as he watched Yuri hit another target dead-on.

“Never said I never did this before.  Just that I prefer not to.”

Suddenly, though, he found the bow stolen from his hands, and he realized Claude was there, hanging from a rope from the ceiling.  “Gotta be sneakier, Yuri.  Bows are all about stealth.”

Well, if anyone could throw off Yuri’s focus, it was him.  He found himself huffing and grabbing at his weapon.  “Give me that.”

“Gotta be faster than that!!” Claude laughed as he pulled himself up on the rope and out of range, only for Yuri to follow him up.

“...” Byleth wasn’t even going to try to stop that.

Prompt: “Why don’t you trust me for once” Fandom: Fire Emblem: Three Houses Rating: G

“Are you sure about this?”

“How about you trust me for once?  I’m the expert, remember?” Sylvain gently pushed Dimitri towards a table in the dining hall where a couple girls were sitting.  Ones they already knew, at least.  “Come on, it’s not gonna be that hard.  Just say hello.”

Before either of them could get Constance and Hapi’s attention, however, Hapi’s eyes slowly drifted up, and she stared at both of them.  “...seats taken.”

“By who?” Sylvain asked with a frown.

“Someone less tiring.” She went back to her food without another word.

“Well,” Sylvain said as he turned Dimitri back around.  “So much for that one.”

“Aren’t you the one who said it would be easy because they ‘haven’t seen a decent man in two years’?”

“Sure, throw my words back at me.”

Byleth always had such a stoic look on his face, that the first time Annette found him playing with the cats, she rubbed at her eyes, wondering if she was seeing things, or dreaming.

But no, there he was, teasing one of the monastery cats with a long stick.  They both seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Before she knew it, Annette had Mercedes beside her, and they were both watching in wonder.

“Sometimes, you can even see him smile,” Annette whispered to her friend.  “Are we sure this is the same guy?”

“Everyone has a weakness, Annie,” Mercedes said with a gentle laugh.  “I think we shouldn’t point it out that we’ve seen him, though.”

“Aw, but I want to play with the cats with him.”

“Perhaps another time.”

Prompt: “Are you kidding me?” Fandom: Paradise Killer Rating: G

There was little time to rest, and to be honest, Love Dies had been doing nothing but resting when she was stuck up in the Idle Lands.  That didn’t mean she couldn’t be tempted to by a good enough reason.

Yuri Night was not a good enough reason.  He wasn’t even in the realm of possibility, and she sort of hated when she had to go talk to him.

“Are you kidding me?” he asked as he saw her approaching him again.  “I don’t need to talk to you, freak.”

Love Dies had been trying so hard to be courteous with him, but he was getting on her last nerve.  If she had less integrity as an investigator, she might just pin this whole thing on him.  “I’m just here to give your phone back, Yuri,” she said, holding it out.

Yuri huffed.  “And you didn’t find a single thing on it.  A waste of time and resources.”

“I did find something,” she said.  When Yuri stared at her, she continued with, “Nice Crimson Acid wallpaper.”

“I don’t-“ Yuri looked at his phone to see that it was true.  There was a picture of Crimson right on there.  He huffed and slipped it in his pocket.  “I’m tired of you, freak.  Are we done here?”

“I can get you her autograph if you want.”

“Get out of my sight.”

“Do we have to?”

Byleth stared at Bernadetta.  He had been trying to get her out of her room more and more, and he had succeeded this time- sort of.  They were outside her room, and he had asked her if she wanted to have lunch with him.

“Yes,” was his simple answer.  “Yuri’s coming, too.”

Bernadetta started shaking at that.  “Do we have to?” she repeated.  “He doesn’t like me.  I think he wants to kill me.”

That made Byleth pause for a moment.  And then he remembered that she just... probably thought everyone and everything wanted to kill her.  “It’ll be fun.”

“Nooooooope.  Gonna die, gonna die, he’s gonna kill me.” Bernadetta squeezed her eyes shut, then opened one a few moments later to see Byleth was still giving her that blank look.  “...you’re gonna make me, aren’t you?”

“It’s worth extra credit if you stay the entire time.”

“Fine.”

With the end of the island came destabilization.  Love Dies had no idea how many days were supposed to have passed, though even under normal circumstances, time didn’t really matter to anyone.  At least to members of the Syndicate.

She just knew as she left Doom Jazz’s yacht that the sky looked slightly different than when she went in.

“Sure you don’t got time for more?” His voice was joking as he followed her out, running a hand over his hair.  He looked a little more rumpled than usual.

“You shouldn’t be joking around at a time like this.”

“And neither should you!  Half the things you’re saying lately are weird.”

“Three million days in exile does a number on your brain.” Love Dies huffed as she ran a hand through her own hair.  She at least wanted to look a little more presentable.  She had more people to talk to.

“Maybe we can get together again in a little less than three million days?” He had that lopsided grin, but Love Dies had a feeling that maybe he wasn’t joking about that one.

“...well, I might finally be around for Perfect 25.”

“I’ll hold you to it.”

“This.  This makes it all worth it.” Haru was talking with his mouth full again, but he’d gone so fast at the ice cream that there was little time for anything else.

Ryo found himself rolling his eyes.  “How do you not have brain freeze yet?”

“Magic.  Maybe I’m actually all digital and you don’t know it.”

Without even thinking, Ryo reached out and poked Haru’s cheek, then his shoulder.  “Or a robot?”

“Robots don’t eat ice cream.  Scientific fact.” Haru grinned.

“And where did you read that?”

“Some random guy was saying things in the text chat in SK Online the other day.  That was one of them.”

“So you believe everything you see online?”

“Pretty much.”

“Are you sure you don’t need anything?”

“Did I ask, investigator?”

Akiko was already cursing in Romanian.  Love Dies had only talked with her a handful of times, but she knew that tone by now.

“No, but I’m going back to the mainland and I can’t imagine staying out here has much for accommodations.  Not even a sandwich?”

Akiko huffed and turned to look at Henry, who was cursing in a language much more familiar to Love Dies.  “I can go days with only the basics, and I have not run out of rations yet.”. And then she lowered her head, still keeping an eye on the prisoner.  “If this were normal circumstances, perhaps I’d ask for ear plugs.”

Love Dies glanced at the young Citizen as well.  He was worked up, as always.  And she hadn’t managed to pry out of him what little he did know of the night of the murder, let alone anything else.

And then she turned.  “I’ll have Lydia drive me out and get some music.  They say it soothes the savage beast.”

Akiko narrowed her eyes.  “Are you talking about me or him?”

“Yes.”

Fictober Day 19

Prompt: “I can’t do this anymore” Fandom: Paradise Killer Rating: G

“I can’t do this anymore, LD.”

Love Dies gazed up at Lydia.  She knew it was a risk to take time out of her investigation for socializing, but Lydia had just seemed so tired, behind that mask of happiness.  Love Dies knew the feeling well, but exile had taken away her desire to hide her emotions any longer.

“Do what?” she asked as she leaned against Lydia’s car, taking a long drink.  Nothing alcoholic, just the last can of Power of Goat Soda she’d gotten from one of the vending machines scattered around the island.  She needed energy if she was going to keep going.

“All of this.” Lydia lowered her voice so only Love Dies could hear.  “Sam and I just want to go back to the real world.  Live the lives we were meant to before that goddamn war.”

“...sometimes I know the feeling.” Love Dies raised her head up to gaze at the sky.  The colors were different from the island she’d left.  There was something melancholic about them.  Had the gods known what would become of this one?

“If I solve this, there’s a chance they’ll let me stay out of exile,” Love Dies said.  “Maybe we can all figure out where we want to go in Perfect 25.”

“It won’t be perfect.  Especially with the council gone.” Lydia waved a hand.  “It’s a nice thought, though.”

“Sometimes you have to cling to delusions.”

“You get that one from Doom Jazz?”

Love Dies actually let out a genuine laugh.  “Most of the time I don’t think he’s aware they’re delusions.” A pause.  “I suppose we need someone who isn’t going to drag down the mood, though.”

“Maybe that can be us next island.”

“Now who’s clinging to delusions?”

Fictober Day 18

Prompt: “You don’t see it?” Fandom: Fire Emblem: Three Houses Rating: PG (for sexual themes)

Byleth had spent much of her free day just wandering the monastery, observing the students.  With the warmth of summer setting in, more and more were spending time outside, and even compared to last week, they seemed to be spending more time with each other as well.

She didn’t really understand it, at least until she pointed it out while having lunch with Manuela.

“They’re pairing off, professor. Don’t you see it?” Manuela had a coy smile on her lips.  “I’ve been here for a few years now, and there’s a good chance every year, at least one of the girls will marry right away and have a child nine months later.”

Byleth blinked at that, opening and closing her mouth like she was trying to decide what thought in her head needed to get out.  “So it’s about sex.”

“Mhm.” Manuela cupped her chin in her hand and glanced at Byleth.  “Hormonal teenagers, all cooped up in this stuffy monastery, with pressure from their parents to get a good husband or wife while they’re here.”

“I see.” Byleth stood up at that.

Manuela rose her eyebrows.  “Where are you going?”

“To ask Jeralt about contraception.  They need it.”

Akira had found himself stuck in the subway station.  It was more crowded than usual for this time of day, and despite that he’d gotten better at pushing through the crowds, he found himself stuck in them.

Suddenly his phone went off, and he checked it.  Ann was getting impatient.  To her credit, he was supposed to be back at LeBlanc half an hour ago for a team meeting.

(text) Where are you?

(text) Stuck in the train station.  Give me a minute.  Or an hour.

(text) I’ll give you five minutes before I come drag you out of there myself.

Akira sighed as he finally managed to push past the crowd and up the stairs.

(text) Thanks, but not necessary.  On my way.

He was thankful for that, at least.  He knew Ann would destroy anything in her path without a thought to it, and he didn’t need to explain to Sojiro why he couldn’t go on the train for at least the rest of the year.

Fictober Day 16

Prompt: “I never wanted anything else” Fandom: Fire Emblem: Three Houses Rating: G

When she didn’t have chores to do, Mercedes, more often than not, could be found in the cathedral.  She had spent so much of her childhood in churches, places that counted praying as an extracurricular activity.  Not that she minded much.

As she was settling down in a pew, though, she noticed someone she didn’t usually see in there.  She had no idea if Professor Jeritza was a religious man or not, and she supposed it didn’t matter.  Still, she found herself calling out to him.

“Good afternoon, professor,” she said with a smile when he turned and saw her.

“Praying as always, Mercedes.”

“Mhm.” Mercedes folded her hands in her lap.  “Mostly for the happiness of my friends, and... my family.”

“Most here have much more selfish things in mind when they address the goddess, I’ve found.” He had approached the pew by then, and he folded his arms.

“Maybe.  But the happiness and health of my loved ones... I never really wanted anything else.” She tilted her head.  “Would you like to pray with me.”

“...perhaps.  For a few minutes.”

Byleth stared straight at Sylvain as she put up a notice that she was going to be doing a sword fighting seminar on their free day.  He’d been chatting with one of the female students, which wasn’t an uncommon occurrence.  But he was also pointedly avoiding that gaze, and even turned around.

He couldn’t very well ignore his teacher when she walked right up to them and scared the girl off, though.

“Hey, professor!  Looking lovely, as usual.” He ran a hand through his hair. “Did you need something?”

“You should come.” She pointed to the notice.

“What, swords?  Not interested, thanks. They were never my thing.” He held a hand up and shook his head.

“But you can learn anything.”

“I know you need to say that as a teacher but-“

“No.” She shook her head.  “I’ve seen how you do when you’re not pretending to be stupid.”

“Ouch.” Sylvain laughed nervously.  “You sure know how to sweet talk a guy.”

“You’re coming.”

“Do I have a choice?”

“No.”
