Debunked: Top 3 Opinions about Yo-Yoing
Once you begin yo-yoing, you will hear people say these statements a lot.
Metal Yo-Yo's are better than Plastic Yo-Yo's
Entirely Untrue. Individual yo-yo's may be better than others, but it all matters about the specific material used, precision in machining, weight distribution, and more.
Unresponsive Play is Superior
More complex, true. And it does look cooler (im most people's opinion), but it is far from obsolete. If you do not learn responsive play first, you are missing critical fundamentals. "You need to learn to walk before you can run."
I can't do a certain trick, I must need a better yo-yo
Never the case, unless the style of play is different. If it's a 1A division trick, it can be done with ANY 1A yo-yo. Same for 2A, 4A, and so on. Just keep practicing.
Best Budget Unresponsive Throws
Some professional yo-yo's can cost upwards of $70. Not everyone can afford throws like that. This post is for those people. Here are the two best throws (one plastic, one metal) that you can get for under $30.
MagicYoYo Purple Line -$18 (Metal)
It seems to be a commonly held point of view, dare I say, common misconception, that MagicYoYo is a "cheap" company, and their yo-yo's "can't hold a candle to premium companies like CLYW". This could not be further from the truth, especially since they're made in the same factory, on the same machines. The MagicYoYo Purple Line is one of the highest performing yo-yo's for the price. Bead-blasted finish, and smooth as butter (I'm not kidding, you can't even feel the thing spinning). For $18, you really can't get a better throw. One drawback: it doesn't actually come in purple (I know, right?).
YoYo Zeekio Spectre - $25 (plastic)
This is hands-down the best plastic throw I've ever used. The bearing seat and fingerspin cup are made of metal, while the body is made of a durable polycarbonate. So this thing will SPIN; through fingerspins, grinds, sleepers, you name it. Although it was designed to be unresponsive, I've discovered that you can put a slim C-size bearing in it, and it becomes a killer responsive throw as well. Similar to the aforementioned Purple Line, it's so smooth you can't even feel the thing spinning. But unlike the Purple Line, this yo-yo only comes in purple (at least the metal part does).
Introduction
Welcome to MythicalThrows! I started this blog with the intent to be a source of information for yo-yo players, both novice and veterans alike. This blog has NO sponsored content, no BS. Everything you read here is from my own personal experience and opinions, from an objective, non-biased point of view. About Me: My name is Kyle, and I have been yo-yoing for over 4 years. I professionally instructed new yo-yo players at a locally owned, specialty skill toy store in Kansas City for almost 3 years. My tips and advice on this blog come from that experience as a qualified yo-yo instructor (yes, that is a thing).
