Who else thinks of “That Thing You Do!” when they see this verse? 😂 In all seriousness, though, it’s interesting to compare translations of this verse. . The ESV says, “By your endurance you will gain your lives.” NIV puts it, “Stand firm, and you will win life.” I’m kinda partial to the KJV in the image, but that’s probably due to the movie scene. How many times have we given up on our fellow man? “I’m done with them.” “They just don’t get it.” “They’ll never change.” “I’m over this.” . I have been struck recently by how many times God could have given up on me and said the exact same things. I have to repeatedly learn the same lessons and ask God for forgiveness because I screwed up ... again. But God. (Basically the best phrase ever.) But God, in His great mercy, will never leave or forsake me—or you. (Hebrews 13:5) . In the same way, “because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ” (Ephesians 2:4ff).
