how i think nanami would propose (gn!reader)
nanami decided he wanted to marry you when you were on your first long trip together as a couple.
waking up to cook you breakfast whilst you made his coffee how he liked it (2 sugars, no milk) without any correspondence needed, as if it were second nature.
getting dressed together and matching each others outfits in subtle ways so that it’s obvious you’re together. if it wasn’t obvious enough with the pda, that is.
the way you’d flush when waiters assumed you and nanami were married; an assumption he didn’t deny. he enjoyed your reaction far too much to stop the interaction.
unwinding together at the end of an activity packed day; cleaning the mess left in the house before showering and tucking into bed, watching a silly quiz show on the tv before falling asleep.
all of these factors which came so naturally had him booking an appointment at a jeweller as soon as you arrived back home.
he brought one of your rings, one which he knew you wore on your middle finger and would be slightly too big for your ring finger. nanami who, in a slight panic, bought three of the same ring in three different sizes, just to be sure, completely forgetting the fact rings could be resized.
nanami who hid the rings as soon as he got home in one of his shoes buried deep within his closet.
you hadn't even moved in together yet, but nanami just knew that you were the one; a theory which was only solidified when you moved in together a little less than three months later.
it was just as nanami had hoped. sweet, quiet and domestic. slow mornings and relaxed evenings, meals shared together every day, jigsaws being laid out on the dinner table which in turn had you eating dinner on the couch since there was no space. there wasn't any yelling, no resentments, no feelings of uncertainty. it just felt right.
the big day came half a year later. you had gone out to see a film you'd been really excited about, and nanami had encouraged you to go see it in the theatre, and so you had.
nanami didn't want to go overboard for the same reason he despised public proposals. he didn't want you to feel like you're obligated to say yes simply because there's a factor pressuring you, whether that's people observing or an obvious big investment having been made.
so instead he baked a cake. not a fancy one; a simple apple one. the first cake you had ever baked together. he tried to pipe 'will you marry me?' on top, but quickly scrapped the idea after he realised his hands were far too shaky to execute the task perfectly (and it had to be perfect).
he placed it on the middle of the dining table before dimming the lights, turning on all the small lights and candles around the home and waiting and agonising 20 minutes in which he paced around the whole house at least 50 times, checking his pockets every minute to make sure the ring was still in there.
when he heard the front door unlocked he felt his heart freeze and at the same time beat a thousand miles an hour. he quickly combed a hand through his hair, looping the speech he had memorised over and over again until his eyes laid on you and everything suddenly went.. blank.
the speech? gone. the sound of his heartbeat rushing through his ears? gone. just you. like it had always been to him; it was just you.
"ken?" you hummed out as you walked deeper into your home, eyes landing on the cake and your boyfriend who seemed more like a mannequin than a man at the moment, "what's all this for, sweetheart?"
nanami opened his mouth once, then twice before taking a deep breath. one shaky hand making its way into his pocket before pulling out the box.
"i had," he started before clearing his throat, voice slightly shaky, "i had a whole speech prepared, but.. i don't seem to be able to remember it." was all he managed to say before needing to catch his breath again and lowering himself down onto one knee.
"i love you. so much. the words in my original speech must have been inadequate because i can't describe how i'm feeling right now. if you- if you would do me the honour of making me the happiest man alive, please.." he rambled before opening the box and holding it up to you. "..let me be your husband?"
