Ah good old Internet Relay Chat, haven't used that in like ever. But found out that it's the best source of help one could get on ruby.

Setup

I got a Mac, so I roll with Colloquy. Then connect to irc.freenode.net server and join ruby-lang channel. At first I kept getting warning about not being able to post messages. Turns out you must register with freenode server. So here it is, just type verbatim:

/msg nickserv help register

Follow instruction, check email then punch in:

/msg NickServ VERIFY REGISTER khoa **********

Select your password and all good to go.

And I learned that :: is called scope resolution operator from SteveKlanik.

gotcha: ruby += operator

Looks like there's no += operators. My guess is compiler is probably converting a += b expressions into a = a + b, or more verbosely a.send(:=, a.send(:+, b)).

Here's some quick experimentation:

    0.send("+=", 1)

    # => NoMethodError: undefined method `+=' for 0:Fixnum

    0 += 1

    # => SyntaxError: (irb):1: syntax error, unexpected tOP_ASGN, expecting $end

Devise Authentication unscoped

At Shop2 we do the Rails 3.2, Mongoid 2.4, and Devise 2.0. We found that Devise by default does not play nice with default scoping.

So how would we authenticate VIPs?

Devise uses Warden::Strategies to authenticate, and loads back user from a session. This is how I plugged into Devise:

Claim back Snow Leopard speed from Lion

At Shop2, we use the Mac platform heavily for development. But the vim on Mac OSX Lion is just so darn slow, especially autocomplete. One of our engineers has this clever idea of disabling Spotlight. BAM! The vim feels speedier once again.

The only thing I'm using spotlight is to quickly launch applications. So this is how I configured my Spotlight:

System Preferences...

Spotlight

Untick everything except for Applications

All done. Now go and enjoy a speedier/more productive vim experience
