Hi everyone! This is an illustrated guide I made as part of my co-admining work at The Middle Eastern Feminist on Facebook! It will be published there shortly.  The technique that is displayed here is a genuine one used in psychology - I forgot the name and couldn’t find it again so if you know about it, feel free to tell me! Some could say: “Yes but you can use that technique for instances of harassment other than Islamophobic attacks!”, and my reply is: Sure! Please do so, it also works for other “types” of harassment of a lone person in a public space!! However I’m focusing on protecting Muslims here, as they have been very specific targets lately, and as a French Middle Eastern woman, I wanted to try and do something to raise awareness on how to help when such things happen before our eyes - that way one cannot say they “didn’t know what to do”!  I’d like to insist on two things: 1) Do not, in any way, interact with the attacker. You must absolutely ignore them and focus entirely on the person being attacked! 2) Please make sure to always respect the wishes of the person you’re helping: whether they want you to leave quickly afterwards, or not! If you’re in a hurry escort them to a place where someone else can take over - call one of their friends, or one of yours, of if they want to, the police. It all depends on how they feel! For my fellow French-speakers: I will translate it in French and post it on my page as soon as I can :) Please don’t hesitate to share this guide as it could push a lot of people to overcome bystander syndrome!! a thing i only recently realized i knew abt character design that isnt just common sense apparently:

do not start ur character design by doing a full, refined turnaround/model sheet.

like. everyone in my childrens book il class is fuckin doing this even though most of them are illustration majors and its a huge mistake (our prof literally warned them against this, and YET)

any time you design a character, start by not caring. by just doing what feels right. dont settle on the first thing; play around. and then draw your character a shitload of times before u start a ref sheet

dont finish anything, just. do super fast sketches of them over and over and over. fill up a page or two. as you draw them theyll evolve. that will happen whether your sketch it out at the beginning or jump right into a final draft, and lemme tell u, u do NOT want ur character evolving and changing AFTER ur final draft. u want to get that out of the way early so u can get a decently consistent finished product

then when you go to do your model sheet you will already be able to keep your character on model without it bc youve drawn them a shitload of times. then it wont be “struggling to draw the character the same every time” itll just be “this is what the character looks like and i could draw them with my eyes closed bc of muscle memory”

dont just jump in and be like “shit i gotta have this full complex polished thing right out of the gate!” like. in the beginning, Do Not Work Hard. play. play a lot. and THEN do a refined drawing. your refined drawing will look way better, too, bc by then youll be completely comfortable with your design

its just a super bad idea to present a character as “heres a ref sheet” as soon as you have a concept. your concept will evolve and u have to let it, or else ur designs will look rushed/bad and your drawing will looks stiff and uncomfortable bc u can only draw ur character at a ¾ths view in a particular pose bc youve drawn them twice in ur entire life

There was an interview with Tim Hedrick (story editor) and Mitch Iverson (staff writer) on the “Let’s Voltron!” podcast today in which they answered fan questions and dropped a lot of info. You can listen to it here, but it’s kinda long so I thought I’d just jot down some of the highlights (warning: potential season 2 spoilers!!):

- There will be “strong and emotional” interactions between Keith and Allura (I just shared my thoughts on that here, lmao) - The next issue of the comic will be Lance-centric and will explore Lance’s insecurities - ….There will also be an episode that focuses on Lance’s insecurities (*screams*) - More paladin backstories!! - The lions come with lion slippers which is where Lance got his from (omg) - We’re gonna learn about Shiro’s family - They explained the quintessence of the blue lion!! Apparently it holds the team together and supports everyone, and it’s….flexible (heh heh).  - Shiro is a family friend of the Holts and has been to their house for dinner (and yet didn’t recognize Pidge for some reason, lolll).  - “We will learn about Matt and his glasses in a future episode” ;LAKJDFLKJSD - They were strangely evasive about a question regarding the similarities between Allura’s and Haggar’s magic and said that would be “explored more.” WHAT DOES IT MEANNNN.  - When asked about Galra!Keith: “Oh, fans and their theories hahaha!!! [nervous laughter and throat clearing]” I N T E R E S T I N G

See, in many modern animes, you’d probably get the protagonist to say something like, “Wha-WHAAAT? Uh, b-but we’re both girls! Shouldn’t you be giving this to a boy or something?” 

I really like how Usagi handles it. She’s not undermining the girl’s feelings and she’s taking her seriously. And while she doesn’t reciprocate, she offers her friendship instead of just brushing the girl off and going “ew, gay weirdo!” Sailor Moon really did empower women and sexuality, and this is one of the many scenes that showcases that.
