courfeyrac saying this to mr combe-“why not wait till daybreak?”-ferre always makes me laugh.

also,

“Combeferre defended it mildly, Courfeyrac was energetically battering it.”

makes me laugh too. (can you tell i’m mixing translations?) the word “battering” after describing courf as a kitten who will grow into a tomcat is so funny. it also shows combeferres place in the group. he’s pretty much just indulging courfeyrac! they’re so cute. the kitten and his motherdog! ferre is sillier than we give him credit for! he sings after shutting marius up! who else but ferre?!

also also, grantaire wants to buy the pants that will get him the ladies. the lady in question is a 17 year old girl, who is actually a 22 year old man. hah! wasn’t everyone “yours if you wanted”, r?

also also also, i love that they kept the joke of “jolllly” going past it’s introduction. it’s one of my favorite funny nicknames. isn’t it cute that the two big nicknames are for our jolllly and bossuet?

another thought i had while highlighting a copy of les miserables, specifically the abc introduction chapter

“Combeferre, perhaps, preferred the pure radiance of the beautiful to the flaming glory of the sublime.”

i think the reason for enjolras and combeferre’s intimate friendship (enjolras is seen touching him casually more than anyone else, and even allows combeferre to “polarize” his views) is combeferre’s preference for human beauty over raging divinity. (it says it clearer in other translations. the one i’m looking at right now is kinda… meh.) he doesn’t idolize enjolras, he respects enjolras as an equal. he loves enjolras and enjolras loves him, and they can be human with each other. he taught enjolras how to be patient, and allowed enjolras to be beautiful without being severe. just a thought.

(also, i think it’s cute how often jehan is compared to combeferre, immediately being called “a shade gentler”, even if it’s just a segue… hahaha! i think it’s even cuter when it’s said jehan prefers raging divinity… sigh… so alike, yet so different. i love prouvaire. what a cutie.)

WHO DOES THIS SOUND LIKE? HM??? does nobody else find it a little bit suspect that combeferre, who had nothing against fighting if it was for a greater good (“It is not that Combeferre was not capable of fighting, he did not refuse a hand-to-hand combat with the obstacle, and to attack it by main force and explosively”) suddenly had objections about shooting a man that closely resembled enjolras?? i know that “he could be your brother” most likely meant “hey, he’s a person”, and not “he looks like you. he could be YOUR brother”, but WHAT IF IT DID? what if, with enjolras saying “he is”, he’s enforcing the former thought, and telling combeferre not to think about the latter. how much do you think it hurt combeferre seeing the sergeant die? do you think he wondered if that’s what enjolras would look like in the event of the barricades falling?

i miss enjolferre. maybe i’m being delusional.
