We thank her for her service. MWD Lucca served in the Marine Corps for 6 years which included two tours to Iraq and one tour to Afghanistan. She located dozens of IEDs, weapons caches and was directly responsible for the apprehension of four insurgents. She saved countless lives. On 23 March 2012, Lucca was injured while leading a patrol in Afghanistan. Thanks to the quick actions of her handler, Juan Rodriguez, she survived and has enjoyed her last years in retirement. She adapted quickly and easily to her injury, was walking in 10 days, suffered no permanent ear or eye damage and had the same personality that she had before the injury. Lucca received the PDSA Dickin Award. She was the first US military working dog to ever receive one of the highest British awards for gallantry an animal can receive. During Lucca's time in service, she led over 400 patrols and is credited with over 40 finds. This note is from her two former handlers, Chris and Juan: “It’s with a heavy heart that I tell you that Lucca passed away yesterday. Juan was able fly in to spend some quality time with her in her last few days and we were both at her side as she took her last breath. Lucca served in Marine Corps for 6 years. Her service included 3 deployments. She saved countless lives, mine and Juan’s included. In retirement, she became an ambassador for the Military Working Dog community and brought awareness regarding the service and sacrifice of our MWDs and their handlers. Lucca truly was a special dog. Juan and I are both fortunate to have served as her handlers. We will forever be grateful for her service and companionship. After her injury, we did our best to keep her spoiled during her well-deserved retirement. We truly appreciate the time we were able to share with Lucca. Lucca’s incredible personality and spirit left a lasting impression on us and countless others who knew her.
