I'm soooo curious about this whole thing and what it means... the design is exactly like a dagger/knife that Lara is using in the concept trailer. It's also shown with the light in certain scenes, the ones I remember for now: the scene after Lisa says she will find Lara, and the one where Mari says that Lara needs to stop following her.
I've rewatched some scenes from episode 1 and it looks like before turning into foam, the light comes out of her body and it turns into the knife once she says "I was the vile one."
In the original The Little Mermaid there was a knife that was given to her by her sisters, who made a deal with the sea witch for it, in order to avoid turning into foam and go back to being a mermaid she had to plunge the blade into the prince's heart. In this concept trailer it looks like that’s being represented by taking the prince’s light that comes from his heart. In this case, we don't know if it's just so she can stop her fate of turning into foam or also because she needs the light for her kingdom.
In the anime, the knife but in a bigger size is only introduced after it comes out of the lake when Mari says that she likes her -> Lara feels accepted after thinking the humans would see her as "vile" again and her words make her skip a heartbeat.
After this, they show us Lisa and the dude that follows her, it's worth noting that it looks like only they can see it, I guess Lara too but she's too focused on Mary to care lol anyway, the dude asks "What is that?" and she answers "Her heart will become the light that save us. Lara, please hurry. Find us... Find your true love", in the second episode Lisa and Luna explain this, the light brings the castle to life and it was all created by their mother. They also say that one of them could have the same power, Lara looks at her hands and Luna says there is no point in doing that because "the light is born out of love, the kind that is warm and fuzzy", and only when the chosen princess feels true love will that radiant light be born deep within her heart... the scene with Mari in the third ep seems to make her feel "warm and fuzzy" and it's interesting how that cute and wonderful thing triggered that at the lake when we saw the dark existence of the knife in the concept trailer 😭
Side note: the hands not being a proof remind me of the ring, the expectations it puts on her, how she lost it the second she met Mari and how Grace even says "just forget about it" but that's another can of worms.
We know Lara is the one with the mission to return this light and it worries me because it makes me think about her mother, who is clearly dead, we don't know if the light/power had something to do with it, if it just came from her love or there was also a sacrifice, it just seems like there's also something more sinister that is not being said (the title even worries me now, I can handle something bittersweet if she has to go back to her kingdom but no more than that </3).
They also showed the knife in one of the previews, it looks like it could possibly be doing the same thing it did in the concept trailer: trying to bite/suck the light out of something (Shiga or the merfolk in the lake? or everyone atp😭) or someone (Lara's true love, one person specifically or like most of the people seen in the OP). For now I think it's about a place because this knife is huge lol and because in the second episode, Grace begs Mari to go look for Lara, she says "she's a princess who could end up destroying this place!" (#watdatmean Grace...)
Writing this mess also reminds me that in the first episode, Grace says to Rowan/the king, "I sensed the same quality as in Her late Majesty." "The girl is a special one. Her light can also become a blade that brings your place to ruin." 👀👀👀 and Rowan is like "We cannot let the vile humans taint our light." I'm just rambling now but ANYWAYS the point was that it was interesting and it made me worry about Lara, don't want her to be doomed or that she feels the need to choose... let her have peace😭
