after hours
Nancy closed the door to the back room behind her, the lock clicking shut as she did so. The office was only half-lit, the sun having set hours ago, a few straggling bars of florescent lights still humming on the ceiling as she shut everything down for the evening. Her coworkers had all already left, and she hummed quietly to herself as she finished up. She supposed the empty office could have been lonely or creepy under different circumstances, but after all the tiny, dark places she’d been locked up in, it seemed tame.
She looked up from the stack of files on the desk before her when she heard the bell ring over the door. Sighing and picking up the pile, she crossed the room to where the other stood. “Not quite sure what legal advice you’re seeking right now,” Nancy spoke up, “but as you can see, we’re closed.”
It was getting late, it’d been awhile since he’d seen Nancy, so he figured he could swing by and see her. Ned stopped by the law offices and saw a light still on and her cleaning up. He knew they were closing but he still got up and entered the building.
“Sorry, didn’t mean to disturb you. I wasn’t looking for legal advice, I’m looking for a girl. Nancy Drew? I used to see her around a lot, but I haven’t for awhile.”
