Russia insists it's winning its war on Ukraine, but new data reveals "it has little to show for its efforts," said Riley McCabe. Russia has been on the offensive since early last year, but its losses have been catastrophic.

Russian casualties in Ukraine are nearing 1 million. Since January 2024, Moscow has also lost roughly 1,200 armored fighting vehicles, 3,200 infantry fighting vehicles, and 1,900 tanks. All that for seizing fewer than 1,800 square miles of territory at a glacial pace similar to the trench warfare of World War I. Ukraine's ingenious military "has saturated the battlefield with drones," which are taking a deadly toll on Russian soldiers, and have fortified their front lines with "minefields, trenches, anti-armor obstacles, and artillery positions that shred assaults." The Kremlin's only "path to victory" is if the U.S. completely abandons Ukraine. Russia's Vladimir Putin is "betting that political fatigue in Washington will deliver him what his military cannot," but he holds "a far weaker hand than many in the West assume." To force him to negotiate, the U.S. should expand military assistance to Kyiv and impose new sanctions on Moscow. Russia can win only "if Washington lets it."
