Max walked barely a step slower than her pace so he could stop when she stopped and walk when she walked, letting her lead the way. She wasn’t too happy with him and he could understand. Nonetheless, he was grateful. And he could suffer through a lecture on the drawbacks of guns without too much disagreement in return, at the very least.
He couldn’t argue she wasn’t great with that thing. “Whatever you say, boss,” he deferred. Again… the least he could do.
eloise had LIKED to claim she didn’t need any friends to make it in this world- she needed allies, resources. . . not SOCIALIZATION. alas, she was still a teenager- a teenager who was accustomed to constant & consistent human interaction . . . so having someone like MAX on hand was useful when she needed someone to forcefeed her adolescent anguish. ❝ good- i handcarve all arrows for myself. . . ❞ english sloshed uncomfortably on her tomgue as she loaded another arrow without missing a beat, drawing her arm back more confidently now as she took her shot and sniped yet another one of the undead corpses. ❝ - how did this even HAPPEN?? ❞

☼ • → ELOISE !!
☼ • — it would be a bold - faced LIE to say he could not feel it tugging at his heartstrings , the disappointment with which the hunter seems to imagine herself , imagine her WORTH . christopher haas has always been a BLEEDING HEART , a bottomless well of empathy & compassion for every soul whose path should merge , converge with his own , and eloise lefevre is no exception . countless moments he’s only WISHED he could convey the value he sees in the young woman , the BENEFIT she offers the manor simply with her presence , her skills . ( somehow , in spite of the state of things & the sheer SCARCITY of proper nourishment , the gardener has been able to maintain an herbivorous diet , but even he , perhaps one of the LAST vegetarians in colorado — maybe even the country — cannot deny that the camp would SUFFER without her talents . ) lips falter from an easy smile , if only for a moment , to fall into a sympathetic tilt . ❝ it is enough , ❞ he insists as he helps her to her feet. ❝ you’re enough , ellie - bean , an’ i refuse t’let you sit here an’ continue thinkin’ that you’re not . ❞ it isn’t a THREAT — he’s hardly ever been capable of as much — but it is a PROMISE . a promise of encouragement , of reassurance . so long as he’s still alive & breathing , he will HAPPILY remind her exactly how much she means to the camp , what she means to this new FAMILY he’s found out here in the centennial state .
though he does not expect her to REFUSE the offer , topher still finds himself grateful as eloise settles into the chair across from his own . he does not immediately move to sit beside her ; attention , instead , is focused on the small , electric kettle balanced on a folding card - table sat between them , on the pair of MISMATCHED mugs he pulls from a shelf just inside the door of his van . brows furrow behind a thicket of sleep - mussed curls , curiosity dancing across a sun - freckled visage . it isn’t until she elaborates on her question that he finds himself capable of procuring an ANSWER . ❝ truthfully ? i’ve always been a believer in the power a’ perception . the world has always had its ugly bits , hasn’t it ? even before all this ? an’ for all my OPTIMISM , i hate t’say even i don’t think that’s ever fully gonna change . ❞ as he speaks , he makes careful work of arranging the mugs on the table , pulls out the jar of honey that , by some miracle , has made it here with him all the way from seattle . ( of all the things he’ll miss — and oh , there are MANY — he thinks maybe the SUNNY HONEY COMPANY is one he’ll miss the MOST . ) ❝ but jus’ because there’s bad doen’t mean y’should jus’ forget about all the GOOD . jus’ because there’s sadness an’ — an’ dark — it doesn’t mean y’can’t acknowledge the light , the HOPE , y’know ? what a waste that would be . ❞
another shake of his head , a soft smile to match bouncing curls . he looks back at eloise fondly , WARMLY . ❝ now , what kinda tea d’you want this mornin’ ? i’m sad t’say i’m all outta ginger rooibos an’ jade oolong , but i’ve still got plenty a’ good flavors . ❞
eloise believed some cheesy young adult author had created christopher- no, not cheesy. . . a literary phenomenon had : a master of WORDS, a master of CONSTRUCTION. the blonde was nothing short of an angel, possessing an inhumane amount of empathy and love for those who DID NOT deserve it. what had eloise done to earn such affection from the other?? such praise?? the hunter could not pinpoint any specific moment where the other could have decided she was worthy of his friendship, worthy of all he had to offer- whatever had struck him within her, eloise wished she could stumble upon for herself. perhaps she’d find her PURPOSE that way. licking at the backs of her eyelids remained tears, bubbling at the rim of her waterline and threatening to spill over onto dusted cheeks ; p o l l u t e d with dirt, debris, and disappointment. FAILURE, even. she can’t bare to look at him, knowing that if she weren’t careful, she could very well fall in LOVE with the mere idea of him. eloise swallowed his words, pungent with truth and promise, feeling them bounce around in her throat before finally settling in her stomach. ellie-bean. . . a smile dared to trace her lips, chin pressed against a knee-padded cap, blinking into the rising dawn as the blooming pallet of golds and oranges caused christopher to seem as if he had a HALO . . .( and she was sure he did ). ❝ whatever you are having, ❞ she answers, her body suddenly heavy with exhaustion as she realizes- somehow only now- that she had been up all evening and hadn’t slept a wink. violet circles encased mossy irises, the dark rings & the complimentary rosey whites of her eyes beyond telling of her sleeping patterns. it wasn’t an easy time to be vulnerable- to find a moment where resting was an option : the world, the virus, the INFECTION- everything was always moving. eloise didn’t have time for STILLNESS. ❝ CHRISTOPHER. . . i have done nothing to deserve your charity, or your friendship, but i am grateful for it and yourself. ❞

a literal child. minji is dealing with a child and unfortunately, there is not a manual that came with being a driver for lionscrest. this is not a car ; she can’t lift the hood up to examine what she should fix. this is a human being and unfortunately, as with ANYONE, regardless of age, there is nothing she can do to fix a bad attitude. the younger is as rude as minji is non-reactive, her silence heavy that it must be uncomfortable for anyone else aside from those who were accustomed to it. frankly, she can say the same : the word HYPOCRITE sitting on the tip of her tongue. an exasperated sigh passes her lips, accompanying the roll of her eyes. is this how she would’ve turned out to be if she weren’t abused to mutism? minji can’t bring herself to place herself in the younger’s shoes — and the driver is painfully unaware of her own power to make people miserable. “not as good as you are, then.”
she turns around, walks the way back : she will be reprimanded for leaving a soul behind, not because she CARES about this girl. “did not have to wait,” a scoff of derision at the remark, before she picks up her speed with keys clattering in her hands. “fine. if you want to stay here, then stay.” a shrug of her shoulder, hand on the roof of the vehicle as her words are pulled out of her mouth easily. “i’ll make sure to let amal know why you’re not at the manor yet.” she tilts her head to one side, searching the road before her. “or how you… died, i guess.”
it isn’t that eloise tries to be rude, it is more so that she is SICK of being underestimated in a world where she has worked so hard to prove herself. only nineteen, having had everything & having lost it, eloise felt that she had earned her place amongst the survivors, that she had every right to be a proud, valued member of her camp, and yet there were still people who didn’t care- who DISCREDITED her with something as simple and as impactful as a glance. a glance exactly like the one minji was gifting her oh so g e n e r o u s l y. ❝ i suppose not, ❞ eloise cruelly replied, scrunching her nose as she began to bunch long, tangled tendrils in gloved palms, working an elastic band around the hair and securing it in a D I S A T E R O U S excuse of a ponytail. the hunter licks at her lips, tasting the bitterness of the other’s words as she almost threatens the younger, causing shoulders to rise up to her ears as each nerve in her body twitched : ❝ no need, YOU chased off my only decent kill. ❞ accusatory words sputtered from a disgruntled teen, who used long fingers to tug at the handle attached to the backdoor. eloise wanted to take her offer, accept the challenge, but her stamina had run dry and all she wanted to do now was SLEEP. ❝ i’m sure you would enjoy that. . . next time, ❞ promised the brunette with adverted eyes, ducking her figure down and into the back seat as she recklessly tossed her bow and arrow on the torn interior besides her, using all her remaining force to slam the vehicles door.

Max didn’t come to Lionscrest often—honestly, he didn’t leave Balfour often, period—but he’d gone out with some scouts just to watch their backs and they’d gone pretty far before they ran into a sizeable horde. He took down quite a few and nobody had gotten hurt, but now they were far enough from Balfour that there was no way he was risking going back without any rounds.
Luckily, he had a friend at Lionscrest who was handy with a bow and arrow. Well, friend was maybe a stretch. Or maybe not, considering that Eloise was now at his side with her bow. “Thanks for this. And… I’m sorry I said not having a gun was dumb,” he admitted, sighing with the pain of being wrong. It wasn’t a fun feeling, but at least she was helping him out.
f r u s t r a t e d. if eloise had to select one word to describe the feeling clambering in her bones. . . it would be that. gripping her bow with a gloved hand, she dismissed the other’s pleasantries- or sad excuse for them- with a roll of her eyes and withdrew an arrow from her holster. ❝ it’s whatever, ❞ the french native said as he apologized, voice monotone and disinterested as she loaded the stone-headed rod, looking to the other for a moment before adverting her focus to the target. a hoard of undead, guttural groans sounding from their decomposing chests, a nauseating odor wafting at her nostrils no doubtedly coming from the hoard. waiting with baited breath, the girl lifted her weapon, drawing back the bowstring, squinting her left eye as she aimed the carved arrow tip in the direction of one of the crawlers. ❝ automatic weapons in a time like this are unreliable,❞ she informed, zeroing in on her target before releasing the shot. WHIZZING through dry air, the arrow went, piercing through rotted flesh and sending the creature down with a pitiful thud. thankfully, archery was a silent sport; ❝ i expect you willl be retrieving my arrows once i am finished, yes??❞

apologies for my spotty activity. i’m going off to college for the first time in twoish weeks & therefore have a lot to do before that happens. being going through some weird mental things too, so please please please forgive me. i’ll be 100% more active this weekend, i pinkie promise,
“ oi— that’s my bag ! ” nix called out to the person rummaging through it, quickly approaching them with his knives gripped in his hands. “god forbid i step away to take a piss,” he huffed out, keeping a safe distance from them for the time being. “so what is it that caught your interest, huh? please tell me it’s the can of brown beans — those i could definitely live without. unless, of course, the comic book was what pulled you in,” he paused then, brow lifting pensively. “i have like eight pages left to read, please don’t leave me with a cliffhanger about the cliffhanger.“
the glint of metal catching sunlight and the sudden caw of the bag’s owner resulted in eloise quickly halting her instinctive rummaging. wide eyes lifted up to meet their counterparts, empty hand reaching for the bow at her feet, gripping it’s handle in preparation. never before did she feel the need to aim the head of a hand-widdled arrow towards another human. . .alas, survival had forced her to reconsider. eloise, with wild hair and bated breath, watched as if she were an animal being targeted— staring into the mouth of hunting rifle’s barrel. . . yet the male spoke less of harming her and more so of his reading material. eloise had just been hoping to find some sort of FOOD, her stomach releasing a ferocious growl at the mere mention of beans. ❝ i beg your pardon??❞ eloise inquired, almost in awe; ❝ i. . . i have no interest in your comic book. i thought this bag had been abandoned.❞

it is warm, too warm for her liking. minji had faced the day with the sun beating down on a bod that is much accustomed to staying inside, sweat trickling down in such an exasperating manner that it creates headaches that throb painfully. distrust gnaws at her as she takes one foot in front of her the other, taking its owner in search for that girl. she has difficultyremembering names but there’s an unusual certainty sitting at the back of her mind that she’ll be able to recognize the other.
her memory doesn’t fail her. when the brunette turns around to chastise her, minji merely watches the hare escape among the green of the woods. the driver can find a small fragment of her care to shrug her shoulders and dryly say, “try again next time.” discomfort is even warmer on her body, cheeks turning pink at the sight of the sky’s changing colours. minji speaks with no kindness, unsympathetic with her current dilemma. “are you done? we’re waiting for you. it’s uh… it’s time to go back.”
at the other’s words, a resentful sigh drew from eloise as the irritable teen slung a hand-widdled bow over her arm, pressing the heel of a gloved hand into the dry ground, managing to her feet. ❝ of course it is, the begins to sun set and you all LOSE your wits.❞ bitter laced words string from a dry tongue, which circles her lips as she averts her gaze over her shoulder- half expecting the hare to be behind her, staring. eloise knew how dangerous it was to be amongst the dead at night, isolated by silence whilst the moon illuminated what appeared to be eternally-rolling fields, almost painting them to be ENCHANTING. . . yet true survivors knew that those fields were anything but. eloise was stubborn; she wanted to catch something. when eloise pledged her loyalty to lionscrest, swore on her life that she’d be an active member of the camp, she was half-expecting more of a prison-like life than she had actually been granted. a majority of its members had actually been kind and encouraging of eloise- grateful for her talents and appreciative of the things she could contribute, nurturing of the things she could not. alas, not all faces within the manor were friendly; minji, with a personality dry as bones, was a primitive example of that. ❝ you did not have to wait, ❞ eloise scolded, walking cruelly past the elder with an irritated huff, footsteps heavy & annoyed. eloise was more disappointed with herself than with the girl; this was the fourth day in a row she hadn’t been able to provide. she was STARVING. the supply of huntable animals had been scarce; christopher said it had plenty to do with the moon, but eloise believed otherwise. ❝ i know my way back to camp, i am armed, i do not need escorts.❞

☼ • — for all that he clings fondly to sleep , grateful for the pleasant reprieve of DREAMS born of a flowery conscience , the gardener has always had an IMPECCABLE internal clock . no matter the hour in which he finally rests his head each night , it is an almost CERTAINTY that he will rise with at least a half hour to spare before the first , golden fingers of DAWN begin to stretch across the horizon . it is a GIFT , one that allows him ample time to complete his morning routine at the peaceful , l a n g u i d pace he’s known for . when the world is still silent , still SLEEPING , he can move through the lush fields & gardens of the manor with nary a care or concern . this morning is no different ; by the time he spots an approaching silhouette , christopher has already finished his first MEDITATION session of the day , spent a full thirty minutes stretching PROTESTING limbs with a series of sun salutations . he’s seated in a wooden adirondack chair just outside his van’s OPEN door , bare feet resting atop a carefully placed stone , relaxing now as the water in his compact , electric kettle comes to a boil for a cup of tea . even in the low light of a sun not yet risen , he recognizes the figure , notices the FRUSTRATION evident in her gait several seconds before she actually reaches him .
❝ g’morning , ellie , ❞ he hums , warm & sweet as honey in spite of her exclamation . & then , ❝ you’re mos’ certainly more useful than dust . i don’t know a single spec a’ dust could wield a bow an’ arrow better than you , come t’think of it . ❞ sleep - tousled curls bounce with a light shake of his head . ❝ ’s not your fault anyway , look . ❞ the words are accompanied by a nod toward the MOON , still visible in a fading indigo sky . ❝ two or three more days an’ that moon’s gonna be FULL , so all the animals out there that like comin’ out an’ frolickin’ around at night are hidin’ from all that ILLUMINATION . give it a little time , they’ll come back around . i promise . ❞ he stands at that , stretches lengthy limbs before reaching out a hand to help her up . ❝ now c’mon , it’s too early for that kinda talk . y’wanna sit down ? should have some tea ready in another minute or two . ❞
OH HOW SHE wished she could somehow drink up just a small, tender, morsel of his optimism- sip slowly on warm, sweet nectar that had to run alongside his bloodstream as there was no way he was human. there was more than BLOOD pumping through him, eloise knew it. she shuts her tired lids at his words, rolling onto her side, cheek now pressed against blades of grass that tickled at ripened apples, whisps of mousey brown hair falling astray from a loose ponytail- both she & it limp with exhaustion. ❝ it is not enough, christopher, ❞ soft spoken, full usage of his name, a fingerless-gloved hand fisting at the nature beneath her ( not tugging, though, as eloise knows better than to rip it in front of him ), eyes screwing shut once more as frustration burnt the back of her lids in the form of unseen tears. yet as he instructs her to look, eloise is not stubborn enough to refuse to do as she’s told, wiping at blurry optics with the back of shaky hands and sitting erect, locating the moon- waxing gibbous. she sighs knowingly; ❝ pauvre de moi. . . ❞ when offered his hand, she accepts it with silent gratitude, rising to her feet; his promises always resided heavily within her, because they were the first promises she entrusted with the responsibility of gifting her hope. ❝ how do you do it??❞ she inquires after accepting his invitation, sitting alongside him with bare arms wrapped around torn-denim encased shins, chin resting atop the pads that shielded fragile knee caps. she looked out at the horizon, wondering where colette was. ❝ how do you stay so. . . so positive?? ❞
rythless:
the field is wide open and dry, covered with a strange mix of tall grass and dirt, surrounded by trees. it’s colorado at it’s finest, and he feels at peace here. the patrol he’d sent out consisting of three scavengers has disappeared. they’re probably dead, but he doesn’t intend to let any loose ends unravel in full. his feet kick up dust and dirt as he crosses the space, following the figure.
he half-expects a roamer. but it’s a girl. she’s young. younger than expected. he frowns, watches the hare disappear in a flash of white / brown / grey. mottled fur fading just like the sun over the horizon at the end of an exhausting day. that’s what he pictures in his head, at least. it’s already nearing night, but the day is only just starting for joseph and his people: there are hours left to achieve and build and break whatever it is he comes across.
he tilts his head, reaches for the knife at his waist, hooked to his belt —- ‘ first one of the day? did i do that? ’his words carry a teasing tone in spite of the insult behind their meaning. it’s clear he doesn’t particularly care that she’s lost her prize. ‘ i dunno. maybe if you were a better shot, you could have caught it. ’
ELOISE ISN’T DUMB, she can hear the condescending mockery in his voice complimented by the arrogant nature of his stature, her lips pressing firmly together as she crawls backwards & away from him, kicking the heels of weathered boots into the ground, clouding the air with dust. the taunting gleam of metal as setting sun reflected off the surface of the blade caused her heart to pound on her ribs like hammer against cloth; ❝ they are sensitive in their hearing,❞ native tongue collided with a tinge of fear making speaking more of a challenge then normal. despite it, the tremors now plaguing her limbs, the girl was smooth in her actions- skilled & prepared- taking no more than a couple of seconds to wield a new arrow from the holster slung over her shoulder between gloved fingers and station it perpendicular to the string of her bow, aiming it right between hooded eyes that gazed down upon her as if she herself were the hare. there was nothing wide eyed & bushy tailed about eloise now, her face ripe with a cocktail of fury & fear, biting the inside of her cheek as she drew back the arrow; ready to release it if this man threatened her any further. ❝ who are you?? and what is your affiliation??❞

THUNK!! having thrown her bow down, the object skidding across faded wood and crashing destructively against thee northern wall, eloise released a frustrated grunt of disappointment as her arrow holster followed suit, failure driving the girl to complete and utter despair. beloved hunting gear now lay awry, abandoned in the foyer as long limbs carried fury-infused bones through the dull lit hall of lionscrest, face hot with emotion, heart aching for any sort of comfort she could manage to get ( and knowing, of course, exactly where to find it ). it was about 5:46am, as foretold by a digital watch secured to boney wrist, so hunting boots carried the french-native outside to the garden, where the lull of morning greetings and whistled tunes came from the lips of comfort itself; christopher haas. ❝ i give up!! ❞ she informed him, maddened , collapsing on the ground amongst the gardening supplies & blades of well-kept grass. ❝ these woods are dry as bone it’s been days since i’ve found anything. i’m as useful as dust. ❞
SUNSET ROLLED OVER the mounds of distance hills, the caw of a distant crow that was looming over wind-swept fields echoing in the confines of eloise’s skull as she laid amongst the drying plants. the birds call was mocking and taunting as sapphires narrowed in on their target. a bundle of mousey brown fur traveling innocently through the brush of dried grass and crumbled patches of soil. the creak of her bow as expert fingers drew back a slender, hand-carved arrow was parallel to the inhalation of focused, bated breath- concentrate, el. it was perched on hind legs now, beady eyes scavenging for the direction in which a sound had caused sensitive ears to twitch. eloise’s stomach filled with dread, an all-knowing sadness groping at her throat as she shut her eyes & finally RELEASED the arrow. . . but unbeknownst to her, the hare had spotted something- someone- over her shoulder and taken off as soon as the arrow had been released from her grasp, the stone head instead splitting through a vine and piercing the trunk of a distant tree. hearing the hard hit against wood rather than flesh, eloise was quick to sit erect, fury in her eyes, whipping her gaze around to try and search for the creature. . . and instead, spotting the figure who had scared off her dinner. ❝ . . . you FRIGHTENED it,❞ elose informed them coldly, as if it hadn’t been blatantly obvious, native accent licking at her words. she knew her tongue was sharp, and this person could quite literally kill her if they so chose, but her stomach was beginning to cave in on itself to the point where she no longer cared. she hadn’t found a catch this promising in DAYS- and just like that, it was gone. ❝ the first one with any decent meat on its bones and you made me LOSE IT.❞

hello all!! my name is harper, i am eighteen, i am from the mucky shores of new jersey which means i reside in the eastern timezone, and i am beyond thrilled to be a member of @hellhqs!! i am going to be penning this lovely french darling, eloise, the latter lefevre sibling. she is the younger sister of colette ( @colctte ) and is currently a resident of the lionscrest manor camp as their hunter, due to years of archery lessons as a child. i am still ironing out some details about her history, but if you’d like to plot with her and/or get to know her and/or me- slide into my IMS!! i cannot express how THRILLED i am to finally be here- as i have been creeping this group for a little while until i had the time to finally commit and join!!
