I work out often and eat healthy. But a recent check-up showed the downsides of packing in too much protein.
I knew this was coming.
When I was pregnant I followed a method of natural childbirth and there were guidelines for nutrition and exercise during pregnancy. I was encouraged to eat a lot of protein, but there was a clear warning to not eat *too much* because it could cause the issues in this article. I got really into nutrition back then because I wanted to make sure my developing babies were nourished and that I was doing the best I could for them and myself.
When this protein craze started and people would brag about how many grams they’d consume a day, seemingly trying to win some unknown contest, I knew it would eventually end up with articles like this. It’s just not good for your body to consume so much of anything.
Moderation is key. I’m not an expert, but that should be a common knowledge. Eat a normal, balanced diet. If you have deficiencies, they can be serious and something you work with a doctor at correcting. But nobody needs 900% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C or 200 g of protein or any of these other super-maxing fad levels of anything. Deficiencies are dangerous, but so is the other end of that pendulum swing.
