ARTIST INTERVIEW: Neino
Who am I? I’m almost 23-year-old graphic designer and illustrator lady from Finland. Apart from art, I love working out, food, Christmas, video games and cats. When and where did my artist name NEINO came? When I was playing Pokémon Diamond a couple of years ago, I named my lady Lopunny Neino for some reason! After that, when I was trying to figure out a name for my website it just came in my mind out of nowhere again. And because I wanted to use a simple word which didn’t mean anything, I decided that Neino is good! It’s also easy to say out loud.
Why art? I’ve never really had any deep or cool reason to this. I just simply like to draw and sell my stuff and people seem to enjoy my art, which I’m very happy about! :> There’s never any deeper meaning in my works, I just want to create beautiful stuff. How do I work? Sometimes I’ve got many epic ideas in my head but they usually never turn out very well. My best works are the ones I’ve never planned beforehand, just started to scribble random things on the paper. I work with both traditional and digital tools, but I always use a traditional sketch.
What do you like/dislike about your work?
I like the way my style changes. That’s actually also a thing I don’t like, because sometimes I feel my works are too different and I don’t have any “clear” style. I also like my way of using colours and shapes and how it’s much more professional after graduating.
What are my future goals? I’d love to illustrate more, that’s one big dream. I’ve actually started to make my own recipe book, but we’ll see how that turns out. All in all, if I can get food on the table as a freelance designer, I’m very pleased!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? "Always trust your intuition, it’s never wrong." "Never be happy with the first idea that comes in your mind." Is the artistic life lonely? What do you do to counteract it? It’s not! At least for me… I go to many conventions to sell my art and talk to different people very much, so I’m not lonely at all. Last words? No pain, no gain! Remember that when you feel that nothing is going well at the moment. I’m hardly a scary person and I love to make new friends, so don’t be afraid to talk to me!
