NejiTen Month 2026 Interest Check

Hi everyone, thanks so much for making NejiTen Month 2025 such a success! I can honestly say I had fun as a mod, and I'd love to carry the momentum forward into next year. As the new year approaches, I want to start planning - and that starts with choosing a month. If you enjoyed last year's event (or want to join in), please answer the 2-minute interest check before January 30, 2026. I plan to release a calendar around 1-2 months in advance at the latest.

Hi, I have a question.

Why can't we set a fixed month? Like August or September? I understand everyone has a private life, but wouldn't a fixed month make it easier for artists to organize themselves?

Hello! Good question, and I appreciate the suggestion. I'm still new to moderating this particular event, so I may do as you suggest in future years. July seems like a sensible bet, considering it's Neji's birthday month (and school's out). But for this year, my intention was to accommodate as many likely participants as possible, which is why I set up the interest check poll. Hopefully announcing the month and releasing the calendar well ahead of time will help you and others organize.

Summary:

Bags packed, Tenten stood at the threshold of the bedroom, head tilted and lips pursed just-so. Neji met her cross-examination – and he knew it by sight – with a nonchalant stare. I won’t kill him, if that’s what you’re wondering. You’re good to leave whenever, he thought. Quite an unsentimental way to think of his wife’s departure for a mission out of the country, Neji admitted.

Tenten leaves for her first mission since giving birth, but saying goodbye to her husband and baby proves unexpectedly difficult.

The edge in her voice caught Lee and Gai’s attention, melting ice cream dripping from Lee’s spoon as his round black eyes stared at her. “If you taste just a bit, you’re worried you won’t be able to resist having more.” Tenten pushes Neji to accept his sweet tooth - well, if a moment of weakness driven by a teenage crush counts as acceptance.

I'm currently undecided on whether I'll mod another iteration of NejiTen Month next year - all depends on personal motivation/circumstances, really. It was around midnight when Neji slid through Tenten's bedroom window. The moonlight shown from behind him and the wind blowing the curtain wildly behind him.

"One of these days. you're gonna walk in on something that you don't want to see" the brunette called from her bed.

"You say that, as If I haven't seen most of you"

The brunette chucked one of her decorative pillows at him.

"It's not the same. Don't be an ass" she huffed. "What if I had someone over?"

He'd be jealous. But it wouldn't be the first time he saw someone touch her in a way he just couldn't. Those days of intimidating young men and being a solo star in her orbit were long gone. At the age 28, she only became that much more radiant. You'd think after all these years, he'd have learned to let go.

"I'm sorry. I just needed to see you"

Tenten patted on side of bed and inviting the him under the sheets next to her.

"Hiashi has been secretly grooming me to take over the clan. "

"what?"

"Hinata is supposed to be taking over in a few weeks. I learned that she and Hiashi have been working to move the clan into a three party leadership. The other two seats would be for me and Hanabi"

"That's great Neji. But why do I sense a butt"

"Of Course, there is a stipulation" he runs fingers thru his hair. "Since Hinata is married. They want me to marry. Within a certain time frame. If i am not able too. Hanabi will take the mantal alone.

"okay, what are you going to do? Do you think you'll be able to find someone who's going to understand your situation"

And by situation, she meant something else entirely. Tenten thought Neji was gay. He was, but not strictly. While he never denied her suspicion. He also never corrected her. Or confessed how he also felt about her. Maybe what he was about to do wasn't the brightest idea.

"Would you consider it?" Neji, sat up and pulled Tenten up to face him. "I can make it worth your while. I can help you get your shop off the ground and whatever you might need. In a few months, when things are settled. I'll let you go. They are expecting an heir and you not being able to give me one would be grounds for an easy divorce. The Elders won't make a fuss.

"But then what?"

"That's not for you to worry about. Just say yes, and I'll take care of everything.

Tenten took another sip of her disgusting beer, her eyes trained in front of her.

“You know you don’t have to finish that, right?”

She blinked, turning to the man beside her. “What do you mean?”

He gave her a look of dry amusement. “The beer. You don’t have to finish it if you hate it that much.”

She allowed herself a moment of surprise before realising that it was completely foolish of her. Of course Neji would notice something like that.

“I could say the same to you,” she scoffed, raising an eyebrow and stubbornly crossing her arms, the fabric of her bikini uncomfortably warm on her hands. She’d have to get in the ocean soon; both to cool off and to escape this dreadful conversation.

He shook his head, visibly amused. “Touché.”

And just like that, despite both their best efforts, they both fell back into that old and oh so familiar dynamic of theirs. 

And it seemed like the two of them reached that conclusion at the same time, because when the amusement on Neji’s face dissipated and Tenten turned away before they’d have to acknowledge that slip-up, it was clear that they were still disgustingly in tune with and hyper-aware of each other even after all these years.

She hated it. She hated the reminder that, at some point, they had had each other in a way no one else has. That they had shared something together that they did with no one else. It clung to her like the lingering smell of cigarette smoke, or a faded tattoo that had weathered over the years but had never truly faded properly. A gash that had long scabbed over and healed, leaving in its wake an ugly scar that was easy enough to ignore until it throbbed on days like these.

Those days where you accidentally run across the photo album you thought you’d buried in the back of your closet because you simply couldn’t handle the thought of throwing it out, deciding that you’d only hold onto it for a little longer until you inevitably forgot about its being there in the first place, or when you’re forced to make small talk with someone you loved and forced to pretend that everything between you was now water under the bridge and that you weren’t all-consumingly aware that you were both different people now and that there was a part of you that was and would remain now fundamentally unknown to the other person and there was simply no going back from that.

The days where it felt like you were chasing something that was long gone.

Despite what everyone thought would happen, Neji and Tenten never got together. They could’ve, for sure, and probably would’ve, had things been different, had they been other people living different lives, but they didn’t. ‘It wouldn’t have worked out,’ was what they always told their friends who asked.

(Not, ‘I’m not interested,’ because Neji and Tenten were many things, but oblivious was not one of them.)

And it probably wouldn’t have.

Tenten was fulfilled by her work, some say to a fault, but she liked it that way. Her whole life, she knew that ideals of love and marriage (least of all heteronormative ones) would never give her the fulfillment her career gave her. They never even came close. And even if they had, the realist in her forbade her from letting go of her life’s work for romance. She didn’t do commitment in general, and she sure as fuck wasn’t doing marriage. She didn’t like being tied down, not by people and not by self-imposed constraints. So she traveled. She explored different careers and interests. She experienced things. She kept busy. She took things as they came, seizing every opportunity that came her way in the name of trying things.

And, on top of all of this, of course, she knew Neji too well.

Neji also thought it wouldn’t have worked out. He liked his space. He liked doing things on his own terms; liked the freedom of making his own decisions, for his own reasons, whatever those may be. He didn’t often stay in one place for a long time, never putting down roots (not the kind that mattered, anyway). He valued his peace. He maintained distances. He kept most people at arm’s length. And he preferred it that way.

But also, if not for any of his own reasons (of which he had many), he respected Tenten and his relationship with her too much to let it progress past anything platonic.

And maybe it would’ve worked out. Had Tenten been a little less hyper-independent, a little less attached to her own autonomy and freedom, a little more willing to play housewife, maybe they would’ve worked out. Maybe they would’ve worked out, had Neji been a little less aloof, a little less inclined to take flight, a little more unaware of himself and his habits and his behaviours. Maybe.

(But probably not.)

The tick of Tenten’s heart beat against the inside of her ears and she lifted a single hand in greeting, stammering out a hello. If only Tenten hadn't decided to take the long way home
