Time only had a pictograph box in Termina. I think they might have slightly more advanced technology than Hyrule at that point. See also: the highly mechanized Great Bay Temple, the Gerudo pirates having some type of motorboats, and the music box house.

I love it when someone brings this up because absolutely! Termina IS more advanced than Hyrule when it comes to this kind of stuff for sure. But I was thinking more along the lines of how the chain would interpret that fact (Time owning a pictobox) without the context we have.

Also, that Time probably brought back the pictobox to Hyrule, so someone could have tried to imitate it at some point in the time between the Hero of Time's era and the Hero of Twilight's.

There's signs and a shop in Kokiri Forest. Mask must be at least somewhat literate and know at least basic math. And probably more, considering that HW Mask is post-MM.

I think of it as Mask knowing the basics and Ravio wanting to teach him more tbh. Like, Mask would definitely know addition and subtraction, but beyond that? Who knows.

He just needs to make it about (the passage of) time and being efficient in dungeons (because when you need to save the world and only have 72 hours every second counts and figuring out how to do that better would seem Important) (also because he’s got a lot of practice and understanding of how time works already even if he doesn’t think of it as math)

Like. For multiplication,

“It takes me 9 seconds to activate a dungeon switch with a bow. How many seconds does it take me to open a door locked by 4 switches?”

“It takes you 9 seconds? What are you, a snail?”

“…not the point!”

And then make it more advanced by getting more precise and adding fractions of seconds.

For solving for variables:

“There is a puzzle wherein you have to find and activate 5 switches within a minute. How long do you have to find each switch?”

60 = 5x

And then

“But what if I find some of them really fast? Or it takes longer to find the first one because I don’t know what to look for?”

“Great question! Now imagine it takes you a total of 30 seconds to find the first two switches. How long do you have to find each of the remaining 3?”

60 = 3x + 30

And so on.

Getting more advanced - Multivariable optimization/solving can be taught with bottles and potions.

“A red potion costs 30 rupees. A blue potion costs 50. You have 200 rupees and 5 bottles to fill. How many of each should you get?”

See, that's exactly why I think Ravio is the man for the job. Mask may not be sold on math at first but he would be good at it (like you said), he only needs a bit of help to realize that.
