❧ there was no dramatic beginning between the two of you, no almost kiss as teens or grand confession between you and jermajesty jackson. what was there however was timing — terrible timing. you'd been in the same friend group since sophomore year, shared classes and graduated together. then after that lead to different paths, different universities, different lives.
this meant the group was surving off birthdays, random get together, vacations and new years parties. so you saw each other enough, or at least between you and jermajesty it should've felt like enough. it was no denying jermajesty was fine and that you found him insanely attractive— not that you'd admit it out loud but everyone could tell you did— he'd be lying if he said he hadn't thought of you as more than a friend.
not only you noticed his looks, other girls did too. which was obvious when you'd seen him the first time after graduation with his girlfriend. you almost felt guilty that you still had feelings for a guy who was off the market. he approached you first that night, followed by his girlfriend introducing herself. a girl impossible to dislike and you had no reason to dislike her either, it wasn't like jermajesty was your property. the night ended with you genuinely hoping the best for them, what you told yourself at least.
a couple months later and you were all reunited at a birthday party. he was single, but your love life had other plans as you strolled in with your plus one. when you greeted jermajesty he hugged you, two of you holding on for a second longer than intended. "you look good, you look happy," he complimented wearing the same warm smile you always loved to see. "i am," you smiled back, genuinely meaning every word— mostly. "i'm glad," this time he meant it, entirely.
your friends like always recognised the look in his eyes, the one that read "so long as shes happy so am i." a look that you'd both been taking in turns in sharing because the two of you were never available at the same time. "they're so exhausting," randy remarked watching the two of you from afar, earning a laugh from a few other around. "they'd be prefect together though," jaafar added. it became a running joke amongst your friends — the universe and it's terrible schedule for you and jermajesty— something the two of you never heard the end of.
years passed.
not a lot but enough.
jobs, adult responsibilities, group meetings were less often — it was harder to get everyone in a place at once. now it made the invitations and events hold more significance. while time and life changed as you hit your mid twenties the connection between you and jermajesty hadn't. at birthdays conversations lasted for hours, weddings somehow got the two of you dancing together and the once in a blue moon group vacations left you both talking until the sun rose again making it seem like to others that you were dating. but it always felt like this with jermajesty—easy, effortless— but time always reminded you it was only temporary. the chemistry wasn't entirely ignored nor was it entirely acknowledged. the mutual feelings had become a mutual unspoken understanding.
when you had just moved back to cali another invitation had come through but from jermajesty this time to his older randy's birthday. the venue was beautiful as expected rooftop restaurant overlooking the night life. abiding by the suggested dress code you'd worn a short black dress accompanied with, gold jewellery and accessories, your silk press styled in a neat half up half down. looking fine and 100% single, jermajesty's eyes immediately locked on your figure as you entered the room. his brothers wasted no time in teasing him at his sudden change of demeanour, standing straighter his hand fixing his already well kept hair.
evening was spent well, mingling with others, catching up, laughing, but every now and then your eyes would meet. it's not that you were avoiding each other, it was understanding that once the two of you start talking the surroundings don't matter, or if anyone tries to insert themselves into the conversation they wouldn't last long because the two of you always end up forming your own bubble comfortable and familiar enough for each other only.
then as expected you find time no because the part wasnt enjoyable no, you loved parties especially when the jacksons threw one. it was stepping away to appreciate the scenery you had missed. you leaned against the balcony taking another sip of your cocktail. you then hear the door open and close again, the presence and warmth prominent beside you.
"didn't think the party sucked that bad," he comments as you chuckle in response. "no it's great i'm just admiring the city, been a while since i've been back." the two of you stay in comfortable silence when he breaks it letting out soft chuckle. "what's funny?" your attention now on him. "no it's just. funny how life is like every conversation we have always gets put on pause for eight months before we can start another," you chuckled softly in response.
"kept missing you," his words covered in honesty, your eyes were now fully trained on him. "timing seems to have different plans for us," you remarked and he smiled realising how someone was always in the picture when the other was single. "i'm glad we respected it though," you added. "me too," he agrees a bit more quietly this time. comforting silence blanketed them once again.
you hesitated before opening your mouth again now wanting the words to land the wrong way you laugh nervously before continuing. "i just, I think a part of me always wondered... what would've happened if we met.." he then finishes the rest of that thought. "at the right time," you nod at his words. the words hung heavy, not in a negative sense, just with the understanding of the elephant in the room being addressed. "i always do," he admits once again. you hadn't expected that answer from him. "yeah?" he nods back at you.
"all those vacations, birthdays, weddings that you didn't come to or i'd always think of next time instead," your gaze softened at him. "i wanna say you don't have anyone now?" he assumes eyes on you, as you nod. "and i got nobody? huh.." jermajesty says as if putting two and two together and gentle smile creeping in his face. now there was not clock to count how much more time you'd spend together, you could take your time. now there wasn't anyone at home, so there was no stepping on toes.
jermajesty's body now faced you fully you mirrored his actions, his eyes appreciating your features. "i really don't want to spend another few years wondering what we could've been," your gaze softened at the confession. the two of you were now closer than intended but neither of you minded, because it felt familiar, it felt comfortable, felt right. both your eyes followed the same trail on each other faces, going down to each other's lips. your breath hitched realising how close you really were, you'd seen this scene play out multiple times in your head, you never knew it was gonna leave your mind and happen in real time.
his hand reached out tucking a loose strand behind your ear, his hand now trailing down your jaw to under your chin. "can i?" you knew he was being polite, the fact that he asked made him hotter. but the years of build up and chemistry you couldn't wait much longer. "jermajesty" you huff out as a partial laugh. "just kiss m-" before you could even finish that sentence his lips were locked onto yours. a sensation ran through you, like sparks flying, it felt right and better than any kiss you've ever had.
you don't remember when or how, but you'd accumulated the attention of his brothers who stood there smirking at the two of you. "about fucking time, this guy doesn't shut up about you" randy remarked as the two of pull apart and laugh. "shut up randy," jermajesty says not entirely embarrassed, but his eyes still unable to leave your face.

❧ you'd be lying if you said you don't know what led you to this moment. the day had been exhausting, you'd taken your three year old to his uncle abu's fourth birthday. it was supposed to be a quick drop off, jermajesty was supposed to pick him up but his hands full with birthday runs you'd taken your son. when jermajesty picked him up from the car, the "quick drop off" plan got ruined quick when jermaine spotted your car and insisted you stay for a bit. you didn't want to be rude so you went in.
the jacksons never viewed you any different even after you and jermajesty "part ways". his mother, siblings, cousins, uncles and aunts always greeted, even his grandma would always ask about you. it was like you never separated, but in a way you never did. you parted on mutual understanding no bad blood, however nothing stopped the constant hookups that followed. truth was within that mutual understanding was the understanding that neither of you could picture yourselves with other people.
did either of you actually try to date others? no. did you want to try? no. everyone knew, although you weren't dating they knew you still couldn't get over each other. then when hit six months of "not being together" you "agreed" to draw the line, it had been two months since then where the two of you actually complied to the rules. that never stopped tension though.
the five minutes you were supposed to stay turned into close to five hours, his family still welcoming as ever. once the party came to an end jermaine had offered to take your son for the night seeing how happy he was still playing with abu. not wanting to cut his enjoyment short you agreed, besides you deserved a night to yourself. that night to yourself got cut short however when jermajesty hit your phone up.
