My songs in the #RMNL album are made of stories, and Brooklyn 1886 is no different. It was written by my great-great-uncle to his Union Father in Brooklyn CT. His younger brother Frank was in the North as well, during the Civil War. This letter was written after the Civil War and they had not spoken in years. In this same letter, he informs the father of Julius’ son, Edwin, having lost a leg in the war, he was courier, removed from Atlanta just before it fell. Really heart-rending the way families were torn apart. Yet Julius says he wishes for the best, acknowledges the loss and seeks to re-engage honorably with the “country” that defeated his cause. http://bit.ly/1HMK6gx
From my pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago, 450 miles…the winding road I walked alone. Found a lot there and left a lot there too.
Just like a scene from an old film! Jack caught Ramblin’ as always. Thank you Michael Kurgansky for this shot taken at Club Passim.

Johnny Has Gone For A Soldier
"Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier" - Nell Robinson & The Rose of No-Man's Land Perfect song to start the story-telling from the viewpoint of a woman, a lover. Also refers to the old ways when there were camp followers in the early American wars, where family and others camped outside of the battlefields to follow the battles, care for their loved ones, to bring them food, even to provide them with weapons. So this lover sells her reel and clock etc to pay for a sword. She is dressed in red to signify that she is married. This song pre-dates the American Revolution. “Drive On” - Nell Robinson & The Rose of No-Man’s Land ft. Ramblin Jack Elliot Written by Johnny Cash, Vietnam War veteran telling his battle story, recounting his good fortune that his wife “understands” his emotional state upon return from war. Was he drafted, did he volunteer? Does it matter? The Vietnam War veterans were so mistreated when they returned and that has left deep scars and shame even as they have had to deal with the war experience and injury. I hear stories about this after every show.

We wrote this song to capture the brotherhood (and sisterhood) bonds that develop in military and war and the conflicts that often families have a difficult time understanding between loyalty to military units and their own families. Why? Why do people volunteer? Is it so simple?

You know how traditions are passed on from one generation to another?
I am continuing a family tradition of quilting and feel lucky to have quilts that my great-grandmother, grandmother and mother all worked on, with cotton from our fields spun for threa d.

If some of you haven’t noticed yet, I am drawn to the rustic. There is beauty in decay and imperfection.
