ALSO grace's syntax is significantly changed by the end of the book because of his shared grammar with Rocky. Its GOTTA be mutual, right? how weird do you think Rocky sounds to other Eridians when he talks to Grace?

Adrian meets Grace for the first time, and is fully prepared for the alien to talk weird, of course it will its a weird leaky space blob with only two arms, but they are NOT prepared for their mate's grammar to completely fall apart. Adrian can't even properly greet Grace because they're too busy laughing at Rocky for talking like that

Yes! The linguistics side of PHM is so important to me. You’re telling me two living beings (not even sharing any potential language due to the complete and total difference in vocal anatomy’s) managed to find a means of communication??? That grammar and vocabulary have got to be completely separate from anything both native species would understand. For example, we know stress indicators such as ‘very’ aren’t even found, because a word is just repeated three times to express stress (amaze amaze amaze!). Adrian must wonder why Rocky has such caveman speech (for lack of better term), because of how many small and repeated words he uses, rather than entirely structured phrases.

‘Why don’t you just say ‘amazing’?

It’s also so endlessly interesting to me that grace being surrounded by eridians for the rest of his life (I assume), would likely have his English be influenced heavily by the chord/harmony structure that eridians seem to communicate with too! So I like to imagine that his English became a little sing-songy over time without him realizing it.

Not to mention, being left alone so long, Grace and Rocky DEFINITELY invented entirely new slang that is only understood through the knowledge of both their cultures. So there’s a good chance Adrian is not only shocked by how Rocky’s speaking, but there are probably times where she doesn’t even understand what he’s saying, until Rocky informs her ‘it’s a human thing’ and then stumble through an explanation as he realizes that the joke really makes no sense in his native language

TLDR; linguistics is cool, Grace Rocky big language!
