DevOps is the practice of combining metrics and team dynamics for the purpose of enabling continuous change. 

Metrics - business metrics, application metrics, and performance metrics.

Team dynamics - specialists working together closely or in blended roles to affect change in response to metrics.

Continuous change - to the business, product, features, and operational performance.

Web Application Development

I've been teaching two courses that involve web application development. One using Ruby on the server-side and the other Java server-side. Both require a application container/ web server to run a dynamic web application.

Teaching either currently has dependencies on installing the just mentioned on the laptops of participants - this has been a huge distraction and waste of time since OS X and Windows 7 which most participants have are different from a reasonable likely production environment.

Enter Heroku and Amazon Elastic Beanstalk. Both have a free tier though the latter requires a credit card at sign-up (rather than eventually with Heroku assuming you'll eventually use enough resources to go out of the free tier with both).
