Here’s something a little less mammal-y: Pycnopodia helianthoides, aka the sunflower sea star!

These big fellas are one of the largest species of sea star in the world. They can reach 3.3 feet across and weigh up to 11 pounds! They’re also incredibly fast; 15,000 tube feet carry them across the sea floor at a rate of 6.9 feet per minute. An incredibly voracious predator, the sunflower star will eat pretty much anything in its path. If you’re an benthic invertebrate, it’s best not to get in the way of these speed racers!

Whale falls can be found throughout the ocean. This one was spotted in Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, off the coast of Southern California!
