it’s great that women are responding to “locker room banter”, but...

A lot of the fantastic posts I'm seeing tearing down the "why didn't anyone say anything sooner" say things like 'all women have been assaulted' or 'all women deal with this at some point in their lives' or "all women are told to smile and suck it up". NO WE FUCKING DON'T! Because we are NOT, I repeat NOT, a single homogenous group. Yes, a LOT of women deal with unwelcome advances or are told as children to put up and shut up. Yes, it is very very very clearly a gender-skewed problem (so sit down and shut the fuck up, people who think that saying 'I like chocolate' means 'I hate vanilla' aka MRAs). But the whole problem with other sides is that they already see women as one singular group. "Kellyanne Conway/Betsy whatever are sticking up for Trump so the women complaining about things are just salty hypocrites" - where the fuck do you think statements like this come from? Or, let's talk about Pence's conviction that he has the right to determine when women should have access to healthcare - do you think he even stops for a moment to think that not every woman is his wife? PLEASE make your statements without saying that women have one universal experience. It isn't true and it reinforces the minority status of women - by implying that all women can be reduced to a singular experience. Also, get the fuck out there and vote for offices besides President. These Republicans signing away the rights of rape victims got to office by being ELECTED.

Race should never be an easy conversation

and yet with the blanket term "of color," that's exactly what is happening. I've seen this term refer to blacks, the urban poor, anyone who isn't white-skinned (begging the question of where the Saami, Chechen, Basque, Kashmiri, and literally everyone who's pale and not Caucasian - which includes some Arabs, Palestinians, Kurds, Inuit/Eskimo, etc - fits in), blacks and Hispanics, minority groups (how Eurocentric can you get? The global majority is Asian)... depending on whatever the fuck someone feels like talking about. Can you imagine doing this to LGTBQIA? "Hey so the non-hets are complaining they're being discriminated against. I guess the non-hets don't appreciate that non-het marriage is now legal." In one shitty term I've erased the distinction between homosexuals, the transgendered, intersex, etc. So, fuck you and your blanket term. Parts of my culture are three thousand years old and other parts are American suburban and the best you can do is lump me in as "not a white," except only sometimes when you don't specifically mean another group? Wherever I see this term, I'm going to call it out and demand clarification. If you can't explain what you really mean, you shouldn't be talking about race.

By the end of last century, scientists had painstakingly developed and tested the remote sensing techniques that allowed them to monitor sea ice from space.

In the 1980s, the scientific community started becoming more interested in watching for signs of climate change in various Earth systems — but through that decade, sea ice showed very little in the way of clear-cut trends. The drastic changes of the past 15 years weren’t even imagined back then.

“It was like watching paint dry,” said Jay Zwally, a senior scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., one of a handful of scientists who began in the early 1970s intensively working with satellite imagery to study sea ice.

Still, the new data allowed researchers to start analyzing the long-term behavior of the Arctic Ocean’s icy cap…

Caucasians shirt illustrates America’s racist double standard against Native Americans

Using little more than the shirts on their backs, award-winning Canadian band A Tribe Called Red just sent a bold message: Native Americans aren’t here for your entertainment.

The shirt is part of the continuing controversy over the use of Native American imagery for the logos of professional sports teams like the Washington Redskins. Simultaneously sarcastic and witty, the shirt — a play on Chief Wahoo and the Cleveland Indians logo — draws attention to franchise names and mascots that demean Native Americans while simultaneously lampooning the creators and perhaps the most vocal supporters of such team mascots: Caucasians.

Sadly, the backlash to the band’s creative statement has already begun, as music festivals across Canada have reportedly been flooded by emails calling for A Tribe Called Red’s removal from the lineup. In an ironic twist, many of these critics claim that the t-shirt is “racist” against white people.

Let’s be very clear. Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as “reverse” racism.
