Internship

Next semester I will be working with the Cincinnati World Affairs Council to revamp, rebrand, and increase their presence. If you click on the above link you will see how terrible the website is and the Facebook page they use and marketing materials are just as bad. I am excited that I get a chance to work for a non-profit. I have never gotten to experience anything that has dealt with international work so that is something new as well. I hope that this leads to a job opportunity or it helps me realize what I actually want to do with my life.

I will also be writing for Elite Daily, I previous wrote for NKU’s Odyssey but it was not what I was expecting when writing. The editors there would take your words and manipulate them until you couldn’t even recognize what you wrote anymore. Elite Daily seems more promising and I like that the target audience is generation Y. I think that is an interesting demographic and where I can find my niche in writing.

I really enjoyed working for Ink Publishing and Design it was such a small business and you got so much hands on experience, but I really want to try the corporate world and work with large numbers of people. Ink was great because I got to personally work on so many projects and participate in meetings and brain storming sessions. I don’t think I’d be able to work there because it was only 3 women in the office that did everything so unless one of them decided to leave I don’t see myself wanting to apply there. I also think that I need to take more design classes before I fully transition into graphic design.

Networking 101

Networking is key to being successful. I don’t think many of us realize how many people we have in our networks. It slowly builds as we grow and make connections with other people.

In the book he was able to get Spielberg to come all because he networked. I have worked on campus and at internships one of which is based in California so I am slowly building up a strong resume for myself and people that I can send emails or talk to get recommendations. This is a skill that everyone needs to have in this decade but I can see how it would be lost in our society today because we rely so much on technology to communicate. When I was in my internship class we talked about how networking is so valuable and a simple Thank You card can go so much further than an email after you interview for something.

Last Semester

I graduate in May and I have total started to just slowly take steps back in things I have been apart of for almost 4 years. I have quit one organization, I’m trying to go special status in one and the other one I was just in to get priority registration so I could graduate on time.

I am super excited for next semester though because I will be in classes just for fun. I’m taking 80′s Pop Culture, Women and Christianity, New American Cinema (Alberti), a random history class and another one to get me to the 15 hours I need to graduate. On top of that I will be interning with Cincinnati World Affairs Council and writing for Elite Daily next semester. I have gotten so many great opportunities for next semester that I am more excited than ever to see what is going to happen next in my life.

Digital Skills- blog I forgot about

Digital Skills that have helped me out:

1. Premiere Video Editing - Learning this program has helped me a great deal within my EMB major and just being able to have a skill that allows for me to edit basic and complex videos together.

2. Web Coding- Not the Myspace kind where you edited your profile using the codes you learned but actually knowing basic HTML and codes to create a functioning website.

3. Branding Myself- I mean making sure that when I search myself companies don’t find anything I posted drunk, slanderous, ECT. Making sure that if an employer is able to find me they won’t find anything I wouldn't want my mom to see.

4. online portfolio’s- I make a lot of media and content and instead of printing them off and having a physical portfolio you can now upload your content to the web and create different folders and pages for the content you are creating.

5. Creating Content- being able to create different graphics, writings, using platforms and using your voice along all media platforms.

These are my top 5 digital skills that I have that have helped me become more successful in my work and studies.

Dear Freshmen,

I am currently a senior at NKU and have taken many english and writing courses but have never fully committed to becoming an English Minor. I just want you to know that you should always believe in yourself and your writings because anyone can be a writer, but it takes talent to commit to it as a career.

NKU’s writing department is amazing and one of my favorite aspects about NKU. We have classes that range from British Invasion, Harry Potter, to technical grammar writing. The fun classes seem like easy courses but they are in-depth studies of a particular genre. These classes make you think and analyze more. Which is a great way to learn and grow as a writer.

Major things that you should learn are how to write thesis statements and being able to summarize your papers in the opening statement to really make a reader want to continue to read. Writing takes time and effort and is something you have to make sure you continue on no matter how small your responses or journal entries will be.

When I started taking writing classes I wanted to learn how to write technically and also just how to analyze writings. I think having these skill sets is helpful in any field you go into. I also didn’t want to lose writing or reading I feel like our society lets this take a back seat to having this remain a constant. Keep up your writing, learn to write cursive, write for yourself, write for others. You are a creator and need to remember that your voice matters.

That is the biggest thing you need to learn is that your writing matters to someone and even if you do nothing else for yourself throughout your time at NKU take a writing class or a few so you develop more and grow.

What I’ve learned/ thoughts on the class

This class was very different from most of the classes I have taken at NKU. It utilized technology more and showcased a different method to learn and communicate with classmates.

Take our blog’s for instance each one of us uses different platforms to respond to readings and read others. With our blog buddies we have to learn the format of their platform and how we respond to the post.

When we watch video’s we make twitter hashtags and follow what is going on through live tweeting. This is also a tool that students that missed can use if the class actively uses twitter to post about the class. Your blogs can also be linked to social media so you can knock out the tweet a day and a blog post by doing just that.

I’ve also learned that we are all creators in the digital age regardless of if we knew it or not. We have created platforms for our voice, a network to learn, and create different view points.

This class I thought would be different, I thought we would do more digital writing or learn how to create content for the digital age. While we did create content I thought it would be more structured, creating magazine articles, newsletters, business related tweets and things like that. I kind of wish I got more of that because I am going into the digital market for the rest of my life and want to be as prepared as possible in that market.

How has the internet impacted my life

Relationships

I met some of my best friends through the internet. I have been friends with Laura Zocca look her up on youtube for the past 4 years and she has released a single on itunes, Lewis Watson is on Spotify, and my friend Kim from Michigan which is more ordinary. I was able to interact with so many different people at different points in their lives so it was great to share my life and grow with them and watch how much of our lives changed since we became friends on tumblr. I even got to meet Kim twice a few years ago and we have always stayed in contact. I think the internet if used properly can lead to great and honest people.

Employment

I have gotten most of my internships through applying online. I even have a virtual internship currently which sounds completely strange but I am working for a legit company in California and creating graphics for established brands. My next internship I found online and it is actually based at NKU. I would have never known that if it wasn’t for the internet.

Education

I like online classes way more. I appreciate them because I can work at my own pace and learn as much or as little as I want. I think that is the downfall because you can rush through it enough to get a solid B or actually try and learn the material to get an A.

You learn differently because you never meet your teacher in person, you also might never even hear their voice. I have heard several of my teachers voices because of tegrity classes. Those are big parts of the learning environment or videos.

I am the internet guardian angel

This is an actual song that Korean children sing. “Are skills handed out at birth,” How did we adapt to the growing digital age? More importantly how did children become the smartest ones when using technology?

“We live online,” it is scary that our education is completely different then what we once knew. Remembering, learning to spell, using dictionaries have become something of the past. Everything that needs and has to be done comes from online and you can solve everything just by googling to find the answer.

Technology is like oxygen? How do you feel about that statement?

Look into ning.com it is a different social media network that teachers use for s students to create profiles of characters in books and post as the characters.

Do you remember trying to get onto Myspace and all the banned websites that they blocked? DO you remember finding the servers that broke the firewalls. I am watching a teacher viewing his students computers from his very own. How many people are doing that to our computers right now? Hackers and other people can be viewing us through our computers and we may never know.

A student in this documentary says he hasn’t read a book since high school he just uses spark notes to read them in 20 minutes. That is so astonishing to me. I love books and reading. I remember using spark notes to help me understand not just cheat and get out of reading a novel.

Senioritis

Realizing that it is the last two weeks before I complete my spring semester of all electives has got me feeling some type of way 0_0 I have already checked out of most of this semester. I stayed up almost 24 hours last night finishing my entire online module and taking a test I didn’t read for and ended up getting an A on the test. How that happened I will never know.

I am currently in a class watching a documentary about growing up online. One of the parts is talking about how we multi-task and constantly net use our devices and technology. It actually shows how much slower we are when we are trying to do 5 things at once. I am agreeing with this as I multi-task watching the documentary and writing a blog entry for my other class.

I do think people that text and drive are showing “risky behaviors,” it is addictive. That is something I never do because it scares me but how have we become to connected to media that we would risk our lives to update our status or search our feed? Are the devices we use really that important over our own lives?

People have actually died from playing video games. People have stopped eating, using the bathroom and everything just to play for 50 hours at a time. How insane is that. Again we are sacrificing our lives for technology? We are only around for such a short amount of time why decrease our life span by becoming addictive to something that slows us down and makes us procrastinate.

People have even gone from being star students to below average students in school. The life of teenagers is so fragile that you have to step in to help. Korea has “internet rescue camps,” where they help you decrease your consumption of internet use. You are completely banned from any technology. Everything is done by hand. They even play outside, eat with others and have to form communication skills. Who would have thought something that we grew up doing has become a form of rehab to others.

A Different way to read

I think that in the digital age that nothing is really that shocking. We read most books or articles online now instead of in a book or in a magazine. So much of what we did before has changed and I don’t think reading a story on twitter is something new. I feel like it has become more traditional then purchasing a book and having a physical copy of it.

Similarities are:

Differences are:

maybe not a lot of character development depending

it is using a different medium

You may not be physically holding or turning pages

It could be shorter sentences or characters depending on the platform used

It may not be “traditional” but it is how our world has grown and transformed and adapted into sharing our writings and publishing stories.

Twitter in a new light

I think this goes back to twitter being a social platform and it can be used for multiple reasons. Most people just use it to tweet to talk about their days, and others share quotes or music lyrics. Egan took it a step further and experimented with what twitter can be used for.

Twitter is another platform that gives us a voice and using it for a novel was something experimental to see if it would work and turns out it did. The author is known for finding different ways to share her stories so I don’t know why people were so shocked that someone would try it out and get their story out there.

Sending a tweet out a day I’m sure people were confused as to what was going on until several tweets later. I think this also was intriguing to the people that followed her because they would constantly look for an update or an explanation to what was happening.

Thoughts on my Individual project

I didn’t think so many people would have something to say about an emoji being the word of the year. I liked the discussion we had because what are words? Words started off as symbols long ago and then they transformed into letters and our writing changed.

Are we going back to using symbols as a language? Do people really use emoji’s that often in replacement for so many words? I didn’t even know that the emoji’s had names. I do tend to use emoji’s for certain things; to show I’m laughing, crying, and other forms of emoji’s instead of saying LOL or other abbreviations like that.

That is another thing we use abbreviations for just about everything these days? How did our language change so much and evolve into something completely different.

How did we come from learning a proper way to right to abbreviating and having an emoji’s count as words for us now?

Why do you think it was so hard for some to remember something we learned so long ago but now it’s so easy just to think of abbreviations of the top of our heads and use emoji’s as words?

A space of one’s own

We have so many places to call our on the world wide web that it is almost scary. since 2004 when Facebook was launched we have created so many more platforms that allow for us to have something to call our own. Tumblr is something I use regularly compared to anything to post my writing, thoughts, or funny GIFs I find on the internet. I feel like until recently it was a place free of ads and more about the users. Now so much of it has changed and more celebrities and authors are on it promoting something or their are special days when you can participate in Q & A’s with someone.

Is anything really our own space? So much of what we put online can be taken, sold and everything in-between without us even knowing. For all I know someone could be using something I wrote as their own without me or anyone else ever knowing.

I do hate that in high school we had child blocks on the computers. I remember trying to research breast cancer and I couldn't get images because breast was in my key search. We try to censor so much of what our youth sees that it is kind of crazy that we are trying so hard to prevent something from happening that in the end if teens want to get on websites they will find a way. We would always be on social media sites in school because we found a way around the servers and thanks to Iphone’s we could get on anything we wanted to.

There are predators online but what can we do besides try to set up people to find them? We hear of cases of teenagers going missing because they met someone online but how do we really prevent this? I think thats really hard to monitor because no one really knows who they are talking to online. A conversation needs to be had more so kids don’t feel so alone.

My favorite piece of writing

I am a little late to this response because I honestly couldn’t think of a writing piece I was proud of. What I think is good could be terrible to someone else so I am constantly always second guessing myself on everything that I do. I do that a lot with graphic’s and design work I have to do with companies I work for through my internship.

I finally picked a piece of my work that I valued and kept for a long time. It is my research paper for Media Literacy. I did it on the breakdown of gender roles found in the disney princess movies and how it didn’t send strong messages to young girls. I love this piece because I put so much work into it. I did research on almost all of the disney princesses and found what was wrong with them. Belle and Stockholm Syndrome, Snow White needing a man to live, Cinderella needing someone to rescue her. Most of the movies didn’t align with the times and showed old women roles and it took a while for Disney to progress.

This was also my first big college research paper and it was challenging because it was one of the first major writing’s I had to do. I haven’t had to do many more research papers after this one which was surprising. The effort I put into the 15 page paper was something always remember when I think about freshmen year. I learned so much about Disney and the movies and I was able to use my words to express this big concern found in the movies and how it effects young girls’ confidence, eating habits, and their overall emotional-self.

I enjoyed the research and I don’t think I can say that for any of the other papers I have had to write. I let that paper consume me because I wanted it to be perfect and educate everyone on it.
