On May 19, 1835, five men assaulted Henry Winton, editor of the Public Ledger and Newfoundland General Advertiser, on Saddle Hill, when travelling from Carbonear to Harbour Grace. His ears are severed with a clasp knife and stuffed with mud and dirt. Winton’s anti-Catholic editorials made the editor an open target among in the uniquely restless 1830s. According to Governor Henry Prescott, the event was “a matter of open triumph and rejoicing to the Catholics of low degree, [with] even female servants and children expressing the greatest satisfaction.”
