i am super aware that i exist as a commodity this work is a tiny retrospective
we are impressed by beautiful things, but beauty is becoming less subjective and more prescribed, dictated, controlled. it becomes entertainment, as we find fascination in beautiful people engaging in the most mundane activity. this kind of beauty begets wealth, of opportunity and connectedness. to this wealth, we aspire to belong, so we abide by it’s commonalities, perpetuating its insidious presence.
in the presentation of this entertainment there is little consideration of it’s adverse effects. the goal is to simply maintain the interest, to please the clientele. in this regard, you never venture too far from the initial ‘pull’ of the product, you simply regurgitate the same material in a new wrapper. it’s an illusion of progression, an illusion that sees us become passive consumers. such passivity seeps into the theatre.
in my work I want to question my understanding and experience of performance, and what it is to be a live performer / alive in performance. i won’t rest on a tradition that sees the creative process driven by a desire to impress or sell or profit, but rather one that digresses from these notions of entertainment. i will strive to resist the urge to be moved by ‘clientele’ and to build a product for them. in creative process and performance i will remain conscious of the aforementioned, and take necessary steps to remind myself, and audience, that i, and my work, are considered and conscious.
