Yesterday’s lecture on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease taught us that COPD is a common, preventable and treatable disease characterized by persistent respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation that is due to airway and/or alveolar abnormalities usually caused by significant exposure to noxious particles or gases according to the updates made by the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (also known as GOLD) as of 2018. Similar to last month’s lecture on Heart Failure, there is no cure for COPD but the symptoms are treated and progression of the disease can be controlled. Like all diseases, prevention is better than cure, which is why smoking cessation, a good teaching and implementation on pulmonary rehabilitation is vital for a client’s improvement. Tonight’s lecture tackled on what the world dubs as a “silent killer” which is heart failure but more specifically the Acute Decompensated Heart Failure. An irreversible disease that limits the treatment to its signs and symptoms. The offered medical management are either overly expensive and usually not available in our country or will cause numerous complications from medications if not monitored properly. As nurses, we are told that prevention is better that cure. What better way to prevent diseases is to empower our clients of the proper health care and lifestyle modifications to ensure good health. It is vital as well that as we help treat our clients, we collaborate with our colleagues in the various medical fields for our client’s benefit. After all, all our approach should be patient-centered. #nursing (at Makati Medical Center)
