for the most part nick was raised by a regular working class couple who married young and only had one child … him . he was always encouraged to pursue his dreams and he quickly found out that he had a talent for sports . by the age of twelve or thirteen then he was one to watch and quickly propelled to fame and scouted by eighteen , he ended up landing a scholarship that he didn’t really need . his parents had worked hard to save up and managed to get into some richer crowds - he wouldn't have struggled .

tw self harm , nick developed a habit of raging out when he didn’t meet his own standards . sure , he thought he was the fucking best but he was always living up to his own reflection and so it was an endless life of self obsession and then rage . he would end up with a lot of sports injuries from overworking and nobody could ever question him without receiving a barrage of hatred .

nick was competitive , an ego maniac in every way … not just in sports . if someone had a sob story then his had to be worse , if someone had a girlfriend , his had to be hotter . he went through women like he went through lines of cocaine . fast and furious , ending a little bloody . 

nick would make up whatever came into his head when he later became famous , lying and pretending he was fatherless … pretending he was raised by some single mom who slaved away in a diner . he wanted to be relatable so he manufactured a life for himself and even sold his own story to the tabloids leading to his parents wondering what on earth was wrong with him but he just laughed in their faces . they didn’t get it , they were too simple and boring . even the story of chris wilder's disappearance wasn't sad enough for him .

in the public eye , nick was a rockstar . sexy , young , interesting . he had a new woman constantly and always looked good . the double standard of how these women he dated were portrayed was laughable but he didn’t care because women were just objects to him and they could be thrown away at any moment . 

nick didn’t just have an addiction to drugs , he was addicted to sex . he paid for hookers almost every night and he had more respect for them than any woman that he’d actually had a conversation with because they knew what they were there for and when to leave . 

by his 23rd birthday then his family were done with him but nick was rich , kicking it in ridiculous style in his big house with his pets and friends and money . he was drafted into a popular team in the nfl and became the focus of even more media attention for his rags to riches story lie . 

now nick has been kicked out of the nfl after being injured when caught in a huge a drugs bust sex work scandal that got leaked to the media . on top of that , he was found to have been having an affair with his agents wife so under new management , he has been told that he needs to get clean and rebuild his image .

a couple of years of apology tours and management that still won't budge and an invitation back to his old haunts seems to both trigger him and excite him . he won't be controlled by someone else but he has to find out more ... and if nothing else ... maybe if he brings a new sob story to light then he might seem like a good person again ... rebuilding bridges with old friends and family . everyone loves the underdog .

fully agreeing and way too euphoric to read his old classmates' expression, taejin places the cigarette behind his ear, only for it to fall on the ground. something he clearly doesn't mind, because he's already onto the next thing. “ heard you've been making road trips to devils lake, our very own inspector P.J. longarm. ” grabbing nick's arm, eyes dawdling he takes a moment to inspect as if nick is a new discovery he just made. “ its all staring to make sense to me now, why you were part of the basketball team, ” he voices in a conspiracy type of whisper. “ your arms are freakishly long. they made you in a lab. ” there's a different buzz to him tonight, a blissful high that has him feeling amazing. body vibrating like a shooting spark. “ so detective, what did you discover ? ”

he  doesn't  immediately  snatch  his  arm  away  although  he  shoots  a  disapproving  look  .  touch  didn't  bother  him  so  much  as  the  heebie  jeebies  that  the  disappointing  future  personas  of  his  classmates  might  rub  off  on  him  when  he  was  so  destined  for  greatness  .  pulling  his  arm  away  ,  "  that's  enough  of  that  ,  "  he  says  simply  .  he  can  tell  that  the  other  is  high  ,  buzzed  on  more  than  just  life  …  a  feeling  nick  is  no  stranger  to  although  his  euphoria  was  often  more  edged  with  cruelty  and  ego  than  anything  else  .  "  trees  …  water  …  unfortunately  nothing  of  note  to  add  to  this  thrilling  investigation  into  my  little  protege  …  it  would  be  a  shame  if  he  showed  up  now  …  he  already  missed  out  on  all  the  greatest  years  …  "  lingering  gaze  ,  grin  spread  wide  as  he  marvels  in  how  far  they  all  seem  to  have  fallen  (  he  doesn't  care  to  examine  his  own  situation  )  .  "  what  about  you  ?  have  you  came  up  with  any  conspiracy  theories  ,  taejin  ?  "

if vivian could siphon the confidence of one person , she would certainly , without a doubt , pick nicholas lehoy . the only reason why she knew of him was because of the debate team and though their time together was limited to only sixty minutes every other day , she still had to admit that his ability to take down competitors while in tournaments was as incredible as it was intimidating . " oh , well . . . right now ? " vivian queried , voice so soft it nearly got squashed by the whining creak of the ferris wheel's metal . she glances up at the very top of the wheel , fear induced adrenaline boiling her heart , making it bubble with nervousness . and then his comment . . . it takes her for surprise , it makes her look past her own feelings of hesitance to really look at him , wide eyed and alarmed . he almost reminded her of her parents the summer they berated her for taking a gap year from school , and all she could do was nod silently . it was now or never . now or never . now — " you're right on the first half , " she comments slowly , almost thoughtlessly , as she tentatively smiled . " though , i have to disagree on the latter . "

"  we'll  have  to  agree  to  disagree  on  that  ,  " wise  when  it  came  to  nick  because  his  mind  rarely  changed  .  if  you  managed  to  change  his  mind  about  something  then  you  were  equipped  with  a  special  skill  .  he  listened  when  it  suited  him  and  the  rest  of  the  time  ?  he  did  whatever  he  wanted  .  "  right  now  is  the  time  .  later  is  so  far  away  and  now  is  so  soon  …  seems  more  enjoyable  ,  really  ,  "  as  he's  leading  them  both  towards  the  front  of  the  line  for  the  big  wheel  ,  not  really  caring  that  others  were  there  …  they  part  like  the  red  sea  realising  it  was  nick  there  anyway  .  no  matter  how  long  you  were  gone  ,  some  things  never  really  seemed  to  change  .  it  was  a  good  thing  his  parents  had  kept  their  heads  down  ,  not  wanting  to  reclaim  their  son  these  days  .  he  would  make  his  way  back  to  them  eventually  .  "  ladies  first  ,  "  as  he  gestures  into  their  very  own  carriage  ,  taking  over  from  the  staff  member  to  stand  next  to  the  doorway  that  would  later  be  closed  .

mira pursed her lips as her brows rose at nick's sheer confidence. letting her gaze drift over the game and the plush bat he was referencing, mira couldn't even begin to deny that she would like it. it was cute, and probably would be nice to cuddle in her lonely nights when her cat was overstimulated.

"maybe..." she teased, dark eyes scanning the rings and where he would ultimately have to throw them. "i'll take the bat if you someone get enough points. but these games set you up to fail." mira walked closer and leaned up against the small counter, ready to watch nick either succeed or gloriously fail at the ring toss. honestly, she was hoping it the latter, just so she could rub it in his face the next time they crossed paths.

if  there  was  one  thing  that  was  certain  about  nick  ,  it  was  that  he  would  succeed  at  everything  he  put  his  mind  to  .  despite  leading  in  basketball  in  high  school  ,  he  had  ended  up  playing  college  football  and  quickly  climbed  the  leagues  .  he  was  ruthless  ,  persistent  and  in  reality  ,  there  was  nobody  who  could  go  up  against  him  when  his  greatest  rival  had  always  been  himself  .  a  game  of  ring  toss  was  nothing  in  his  eyes  ,  a  mastery  for  it  from  all  those  years  of  making  cheerleaders  swoon  that  would  pass  easily  into  this  new  chapter  of  life  .  he  passes  his  dollars  over  to  the  person  at  the  booth  with  glee  ,  an  aura  practically  buzzing  around  him  sharing  his  absolute  joy  in  any  scenario  that  he  would  prove  to  be  a  guaranteed  winner  .  nick  had  never  thought  the  game  rigged  …  some  were  but  this  one  …  he  could  nail  .  he  effortlessly  throws  rings  ,  racking  up  points  as  each  one  lands  .  he  makes  it  look  effortlessly  .  as  the  last  ring  lands  then  he  lets  out  an  almighty  cheer  ,  fists  pumping  ,  "  yes  ,  i  am  the  chamoion  .  look  at  me  go  …  you  can  say  it  …  you're  impressed  ,  "  as  he's  summoning  for  the  stuffed  toy  to  be  passed  over  .  it  was  almost  strange  to  see  him  share  any  real  emotion  ,  his  nature  so  twisted  at  times  that  you  could  hardly  tell  reality  from  fiction  .

Sam was no stranger to New Horizons. Given that some of the school's funds came from the foundation, he occasionally had to come over to ensure everything was running smoothly, shake some hands, and hopefully return with some money or new investors. Yet, for some reason, he had an eerie feeling about being at the carnival. Everything was so familiar yet felt so different. The recent text message didn’t help with the uneasiness. For now, he thought, it was better to ignore it and not let it get to his head. There was no use worrying about something he couldn’t control, so why not do something useful instead: selling.

“What’s this I’ve been hearing about some shoes appearing? From what I can tell, the police are not doing a good job at solving this. We need to take action. All I'm saying is that with your donation, we at the Chris Wilder Missing and Lost Children Foundation could do so much more. Imagine how good it would feel for all of us to have some closure. nick  was  yet  to  be  struck  by  inspiration  to  feel  any  genuine  sadness  or  worry  ,  at  times  he  bordered  on  frustrated  at  the  lack  of  progress  but  that  was  all  .  he  couldn't  believe  that  someone  was  doing  this  because  it  was  hard  for  him  to  imagine  the  amount  of  brain  cells  to  get  away  with  it  ...  although  he  was  suspicious  that  it  was  a  terrible  plan  to  begin  with  ...  how  did  they  expect  this  to  end  ?  a  part  of  him  was  interested  in  the  crash  and  burn  that  was  inevitable  while  the  other  part  was  infuriated  somebody  thought  they  could  deceive  him  ,  mess  with  him  .  that  part  managed  to  rest  for  as  long  as  the  situation  still  offered  him  entertainment  .   "  wow  ,  it  touches  my  heart  that  after  all  these  years  you  still  see  the  best  in  me  and  know  that  my  heart  is  full  of  sorrow  and  regret  over  the  past  .  all  i've  thought  about  for  years  is  sweet  closure  ,  "  his  tone  incredulously  innocent  ,  the  other  would  know  it  was  all  part  of  his  mockery  from  the  off  but  that  didn't  mean  nick  wouldn't  be  a  donor  when  the  sun  hit  him  the  right  way  .

sanem frowned at the ring toss game, looking almost desperately at the man running it ( who kept sliding her free rings to get a few extra tosses in ) jutting her lower lip out. ❛ c'mmmoooonn, can't you just give it to me ?? even with the extra rings, i suck, ❜ she frowned. shaking his head, shrugging his shoulders, the man laughed as he reminded her, once again , that she had to win the game to get the prize. huffing, sanem tried again, throwing another fist-full of rings towards the bottles and watching as they all clattered against the glass necks before descending into the catch bellow. spotting a familiar person across the way, ceruleans sparkled with opportunity, gesturing to the game with a defeated sigh; ❛ are you any good at this ?? i just wanted that stupid stuffed shark and . . . i am clearly incapable of landing a damn ring on one of these bottles. i'll pay for you to play for me.❜

"  if  i  didn't  know  any  better  then  i  might  really  think  that  you  were  a  damsel  in  distress  ,  "  the  comment  so  fast  and  flippant  that  you  might  not  have  really  caught  it  ,  smile  curled  up  in  the  corners  of  his  lips  .  nick  ,  however  ,  was  somewhat  of  an  expert  in  the  area  of  ring  toss  and  his  competitive  nature  had  allowed  him  to  master  it  many  moons  ago  .  despite  his  edged  personality  ,  he  had  been  quite  the  catch  back  in  the  day  ,  a  ladies  man  who  had  been  sought  out  by  the  most  popular  girls  and  they  had  all  wanted  that  carnival  stuffed  toy  to  post  on  social  media  .  "  i  can  win  you  one  …  since  you  asked  so  nicely  …  but  you  owe  me  one  ,  "  he  knows  she  won't  be  worried  about  making  such  a  promise  to  him  as  he  gestures  for  the  rings  ,  toying  with  one  between  his  fingertips  .

"Where did you even come from? Normally, I get a sense whenever you're around - a fight or flight response." And it was always a toss up as to which one it would be every time. One downside of the xanax after all, she let him sneak up on her. "There are about a million other things for you to do, why don't you go bother someone else for once." Iris huffed, fully focused on him as she worked against the current drug in her system that made her relax in a situation she wanted nothing to do with. "I'm sure there's someone out there that would love to have your company." She couldn't hid the contention in her voice, the disdain at having him anywhere near her.

sometimes mira felt as though she was a ghost within lincoln city. quiet, observant, dressed in black, most people either didn't take note of her or the ones that did, looked at her like she was some kind of phantom. it had been funny in high school. now, ten years later, she would just like to be perceived as normal.

walking through the carnival and saying hello to the people that left a neutral taste in her mouth post graduation, mira wasn't even sure why she came. just to be apart of something again? or because she couldn't stay away from the drama she was certain would come out of an event this big.

noticing nicholas lehoy sizing up one of the dozen carnival games, she smirked to herself as she said. "gonna try to use all your athleticism to win?" most of these games were rigged, so athletic or not, it wouldn't help someone. "try not to take it to heart when you lose."

he  might  have  had  an  ego  but  he  was  under  no  illusion  around  chance  .  even  so  ,  nick  had  always  been  lucky  in  the  long  run  even  if  he  had  faced  short  term  losses  .  many  would  not  have  survived  the  way  he  had  set  his  own  reputation  alight  in  a  matter  of  seconds  .   "  if  you  want  me  to  win  you  a  stuffed  toy  then  that's  all  you  have  to  say  .  i've  already  seen  the  perfect  black  bat  to  become  your  closest  ally  ,  "  he  jokes  ,  a  grin  glimmering  on  his  lips  ,  brown  eyes  shining  in  the  light  of  the  carnival  as  he  gestures  towards  the  ring  toss  ,  picking  up  rings  as  he  slides  the  kid  running  it  a  couple  of  dollars  .  "  doubting  my  abilities  ?  "

maybe its the drinks that she had prior to arriving to the carnival , but vivian couldn't help but feel distracted from the messages as soon as she laid eyes on the ferris wheel . vivian's fear of heights was forever at odds with the memory of her jumping off the roof of her house as a teenager . . . although the smaller things got the higher she went made her nervous , it was the encouragement of her missing neighbor who gave her the bravery she needed to just . . . leap . he always was there to break her fall and that's what vivian suspects made her fear tolerable . except , he wasn't here anymore and the fear remained the same . " i'm going to get on that ride by the end of the night . " vivian announced nervously as she dug into the box of popcorn in her possession , cheese dust lingering on her fingers as she popped one right into her mouth as if keeping her mind distracted from the spiraling reason why she was at the carnival in the first place . she was in the carnival because she wanted to , not because of the dare . . . heather's voice echoed in her mind , but it still flickered in the face of the supposed joy that failed to register in her heart . " just . . . not right now . i kinda need to prepare for it . " typical of her to backtrack , vivian cleared her throat as she glanced over at her companion , a smile blossoming on her lips . " what about you ? is there something you want to do next ? "

unlike  vivian  ,  nick  never  had  an  air  of  nervousness  .  there  was  no  weakness  about  him  ,  no  bruises  or  soft  spots  that  you  could  press  on  .  he  was  his  own  worst  enemy  and  that  was  what  he  should  have  feared  more  than  anything  ,  not  any  external  incoming  threat  .  he  would  never  be  good  enough  ,  push  hard  enough  for  himself  to  suit  his  own  tastes  when  it  came  to  competition  .  he  had  barely  paid  any  attention  to  vivian  besides  a  vague  memory  of  who  she  spent  time  with  over  the  spanning  years  ,  his  fixation  usually  with  how  he  could  make  himself  look  better  and  not  keeping  up  with  the  class  of  st  marys  although  he  remembered  them  all  .  "  i  was  actually  going  to  get  on  that  ride  right  now  .  are  you  coming  ?  it's  now  or  never  ,  those  who  wait  around  never  get  things  done  ,  "  a  true  fact  although  perhaps  you  might  reconsider  the  need  for  action  if  you  looked  through  nick's  historic  choices  .

Iris had already been here for a lot longer than she had planned and there was nothing that she hated more than her plans going awry. Why didn't the universe realize she was right? What she wanted to happen was the thing that should happen? It was exhausting. The last thing she wanted right now was to be at some carnival thrown by this fucking town but she had her part to play and if she played nicely, she could go...or at least that's what she was telling herself. Enough Xanax was currently flowing through her veins that she could almost be nice, almost. But that almost meant she was not paying attention at all to what was being said to her right now. "Sorry, sorry, what were you saying? Were you talking to me?"

although  he  might  have  talked  about  all  the  places  he  could  have  been  instead  ,  he  wasn't  completely  put  out  being  kept  around  in  lincoln  city  .  his  prolongued  stay  would  only  make  him  look  more  sympathetic  and  feeling  that  he  personally  had  nothing  to  hide  ,  he  was  more  interested  in  how  one  of  his  peers  was  behind  all  this  nonsense  .  (  he  had  to  admit  ,  it  was  both  incredibly  reckless  /  stupid  and  impressive  they  would  go  to  such  lengths  )  .  "  here  i  thought  we  were  together  on  a  romantic  date  ,  just  for  you  to  ignore  me  like  this  .  "

striking bright orange star-shaped sunglasses belonging to a stranger are covering half of his face. an unlit cigarette between his lips that he keeps forgetting to light, taejin is not exactly sober, but he's in a half-space between the two, flickering in and out of intoxication with the breeze of the wind. waiting for the pill to kick in and drag him down, deeper into the rabbit hole. distracted by the bright colourful lights that cut into his vision, he follows them like a trail up to one of the carnival rides and finds himself in a queue. there's someone before him, but it doesn't hold him back from wrapping an arm around their shoulder, he's never been a stranger to personal space. “ hey-yoo, ” he sing-songs, lips creasing into a grin around the cigarette, “ enjoying yourself ? ”

the  only  thing  that  nicholas  was  high  on  these  days  was  his  own  ,  over  inflated  and  remarkable  ego  .  the  candy  floss  and  sweet  treats  on  offer  more  than  quenched  his  penchant  for  sugary  reprieve  ,  no  bodies  left  in  his  wake  or  victims  yet  .  he  turns  ,  noting  the  sunglasses  which  seem  quite  ridiculous  to  him  but  the  face  they  rest  on  offers  no  surprise  .  it's  no  secret  that  nick  thinks  himself  a  different  species  to  many  of  his  classmates  ,  not  sparing  a  thought  for  the  similarities  they  did  also  share  under  a  microscope  .  "  oh  ,  most  definitely  .  what  a  spectacular  day  for  a  carnival  …  this  is  the  event  i've  been  looking  forwards  to  all  year  ,  "  dead  panned  ,  you  might  not  know  how  much  of  it  was  true  if  you  didn't  know  him  very  much  at  all  .  nick  was  ,  on  one  hand  ,  thrilled  at  the  idea  someone  was  trying  to  mess  with  them  but  his  impatience  towards  finding  out  what  the  purpose  was  grew  more  and  more  with  each  day  .  he  did  not  like  to  be  kept  waiting  .

if nicholas hadn't been his ride here, river was certain this would be the moment he'd get in his car and drive somewhere else. anywhere else. but he was pretty much stranded here, and he wasn't certain how long it would take an uber to get here, if he was able to get one at all. but this interaction kept reminding him that nick was a dick, and that for however longer they were in town, river would probably steer clear. that is, unless something came out of today where river would need to keep close. actually, if he found out anything interesting, maybe mari could be nick lehoy's sidekick next time. "hey, i don't know what you think about late at night when you're alone in bed. maybe you think about the good old days, or everyone you wronged." watching nick start to pull a fucking rope out of his bag, river really, really wanted to get the fuck out of here. "you want me to go in the lake?" the lake chris fucking disappeared in? "no fucking way." it wasn't that he didn't trust nick to pull him back to shore, but he didn't fucking trust nick to pull him back to shore. finding a piece of heavy, yet boyant drift wood, river tossed it towards nick. "here, attached it to the rope and lets see where it goes."

"  i  never  wronged  anyone  ,  "  after  all  ,  it  was  their  own  fault  if  they  had  really  believed  and  trusted  him  .  he  had  hardly  disguised  his  nature  ,  someone  that  was  no  stranger  to  reckless  abandon  of  friendships  and  relationships  without  so  much  as  a  glance  over  the  shoulder  .  if  people  still  relied  on  him  ,  that  was  their  own  poor  judgement  .  he  tuts  as  river  denies  his  plan  of  pushing  him  into  devils  lake  ,  watching  as  the  man  comes  up  with  his  own  rendition  that  honestly  gave  nick  much  less  of  a  thrill  .  "  it  just  doesn't  have  the  same  effect  as  seeing  you  splash  around  in  there  ,  "  although  nick  might  have  been  a  sociopath  by  some  people's  scaling  ,  he  wouldn't  have  sent  river  into  the  lake  to  die  .  that  would  have  just  made  a  new  urban  legend  for  lincoln  city  that  nick  had  no  interest  in  .  as  much  as  he  may  have  liked  seeing  river  splash  around  ,  joked  with  him  about  not  saving  him  before  yanking  him  out  …  he  supposed  this  would  do  .  he  takes  the  rope  and  wraps  it  around  ,  commenting  as  he  goes  ,  "  are  you  sure  you  don't  want  to  go  in  ?  i  promise  that  i'll  pull  you  out  …  last  chance  …  "  as  he  finishes  his  handiwork  .
