He has no idea what the fuck the woman in front of him is talking about. She was the wife of a congressman that Oliver happened to not hate, but what had started as a friendly chat about how her husband was doing had transpired into the woman talking at length about when Oliver was planning on raising his own kids. Now, the woman’s in the middle of a twenty-minute rant about the effect of healing crystals on babies while Oliver can only stare with wide eyes and hum in agreement every now and then, wishing desperately that somebody would step in.Â
And apparently luck is on his side, because in the very moment that the woman takes a breath in between sentences, Nicholas steps in with commentary that Oliver can definitely participate in. “Yes!“ he says immediately. Then, when he realizes that he may sound a bit too excited at talking about literally any other than children, he adjusts his tone a bit. “Yes, I did. I mean, it does little to solve the noise and light pollution, but it’s a step in the right direction.” He turns over to the woman he was previously talking to with a sympathetic smile. “Mrs. Ramnath, I’d love to talk to you more about this a little later, but would you mind leaving me to Mr. Navarro here for now?” She leaves with a nod and another mention about the importance of good energy, and then it’s just him and Nicholas. “Hey there,” he says in their newfound privacy. “Thanks for coming out, although I can imagine it isn’t your favorite scene. Did you bring a plus-one?”
"I agree!" Nicholas says, sending a wide smile over in the Vice President's direction. He was a firm believer in every tiny change creating a bigger change.
Nicholas watches the woman leave, and looks back over at Oliver. He was more than happy to free the other man of whatever boring conversation he had been trapped in for the moment. He'd trapped enough people in enough conversations they didn't want to be in, that it was nice to be the person helping out for once. Besides, he liked Oliver. He dare say he may have been leaning towards voting for him, had that come to pass, however he wouldn't complain either way.
"Maybe not my favorite, but not my least favorite either," he says shrugging his shoulders. "My husband is spending the weekend in California with the family, so I did have to come alone. I promised I'd stream the show, and he'd stream theirs a few hours later." It wasn't the ideal situation, but technology made it better than nothing. "Hopefully you've been able to enjoy yourself here, at least a little bit. I can imagine that last conversation, hasn't been the only one you haven't wanted to have."
