Looking beyond the option of working part-time to survive.

"Yes, the authorities and the Government need to address the issue – including making the process of getting help much less bureaucratic.

At the same time, each and every one of us also need to think about how our actions, behaviour and values as a society are contributing to this major decline in quality of life for the coming generation.

But while all of this is, hopefully, being considered and fixed, it is really the young people themselves who need to reconsider their actions to make the best of desperate times."

I returned to Malaysia early December to attend and present at the Internet in Southeast Asia Symposium organised by Monash University Malaysia. I was really excited because it was my first time speaking at an academic event. I presented my paper titled: Power of Social Ties: Twitter, Trust and Troopers.

The keynote speaker, Dr John Postill, had summarised the proceedings of the symposium on his blog, with a mention of my paper as well. If you’re interested in issues related to the Internet in this region, you’d find this blog post interesting!

Last year, I worked with eight young Malaysians on ‪#‎seedingMYhope‬, a Hari Merdeka to Malaysia Day campaign aimed at bringing people together.

We "hijacked" the LRT and Monorail, we sent a capsule across Malaysia collecting soil and earth and we set up an installation at Pavilion KL in conjunction with ‪#‎kakisenifest‬.

#seedingMYhope was held in collaboration with MyTeksi and with the support of Pavilion KL, aforadio and Kakiseni.

MY FATHER was my hero growing up, and he remains my hero today. Four hours after I landed, my dad had a seizure attack which led to his passing barely a week later. He was 73.

Today, I bade farewell to my father for the very last time. In my The Bangsar Boy column, I pay tribute to my hero.

Give young Malaysians chance to equip themselves with international language.

On the abysmal level of English in Malaysia, The Bangsar Boy asks this week:

"How many generations of young Malaysians are we going to fail?

The statistics on how bad things are is plain to see, and it is shameful to let our youths continue to rot just for the sake of passing an exam, instead of stepping up and giving them the education they deserve."

Come onto the streets of Kuala Lumpur for one of Malaysia's biggest protests ever. Malays, Chinese and Indians are all calling for political reform, in a country that's been ruled by one party for 58 years.

Jarni Blakkarly documents his ‪#‎Bersih4‬ experience to discuss democracy in Malaysia for ABC's Earshot podcast.

For me, it was really interesting to hear an "outsider" perspective on the event, although Jarni has Malaysia roots.
