u just turned 18 nd u live in iowa nd itâs 1984 nd u bought a train ticket to new york city to become an actress but u meet a group of friends on the train who are moving to paris nd they convince u to go with them nd u fall in love with a french lady named celine
itâs 1992 nd u nd ur best friends were exploring a forest behind ur friend kaylaâs farmhouse nd u find a waterfall in front of a cave nd u run thru the misty water nd trip into a shallow pool that leads into a small clear pond. a mermaid swims over to u nd asks u a question in a language u donât understand
ur crying in the bathroom of the small apartment in London u share with ur gf. u just lost ur job nd ur dead momâs favorite necklace nd ur gf is asleep in the next room, nd maybe she can hear u, maybe she canât. either way no one comes to comfort u nd u feel like the world is ending
itâs 1955 nd u nd ur gf betty are smoking cigarettes nd making our during a drive in movie. u pull her closer nd suddenly feel a sharp pain in ur side. sheâs stabbed u with a red switchblade, or maybe it was pink nd itâs just red with ur blood now. she pushes u out of the car nd drives away
a fae has tricked u into eating fruit from her land. sheâs laughing at u, but ur laughing inside ur head. she didnât actually trick u, u meant to eat the fruit. u smile maniacally as u reveal ur true form. her laughing dies out as she looks into ur eyes. sheâs stuck with u now
u nd ur best friend are on a ferris wheel. u have spent the day at the carnival, eating candy apples nd popcorn nd marveling at all the happy couples. u wonder what it would be like to love someone that much. u glance to the side nd ur best friendâs hair is glinting in the sunlight, nd u suddenly understand. she catches ur eye nd u feel an inkling of possibility
u nd ur wife r dancing to ur first song at ur wedding. itâs a small wedding, just u and her and ur closest friends. ur best friend is crying quietly nd ur wifeâs dog barks in the background. u finally understand what itâs like to feel whole

making out at a party, music muted but vibrating through the walls and stopping to look at them
driving at night with the windows down and the lights passing over your face as you smile slightly
speeding through the summer sun with some friends in the back of the car and you all sing along
walking around with the sun on your back and feeling a warm glow take grip
dancing in silhouette somewhere seedy and flirting with your eyes
concept playlists;
youâre lying on mossy forest floors, slowly transforming into a nymph, your fingers are turning into flower vines, your limbs are bleeding honey & growing thick skins of sepia bark, wings sprout in between your shoulder blades. your breath sounds like the wind. fireflies litter the air above you
youâre hold up in an abandoned church, outside thereâs a raging storm & a horde of zombies roaming around, pressing up against the entrance doors. you & a small band of survivors are staying inside for the night in hopes to ride the bad weather out. you take first watch & listen to these tunes on an old ipod while everyone else tries to get some rest & the undead crawl outside, awaiting the taste of human flesh.
youâre in your boyfriendâs pickup. heâs asleep in the passenger seat, youâre driving without a destination in mind & you have the window down as you let the cool night air whip against your face in a state of pleasant delirium youâre on a rooftop somewhere, thereâs 5 am air on your skin, streetlights glint like coins at the bottom of wishing wells from where you sit. youâre feeling peaceful for the first time all week
youâre lying in the middle of a crop circle forty miles from your grandmaâs old house waiting for aliens to come and abduct you
itâs four pm in the afternoon and youâve got your head in the lap of the only boy youâve ever loved & youâre reading jane eyre & heâs sipping on tea & itâs the kind of weather where itâs just warm enough for you to pretend itâs summer & itâs drizzling & youâre listening to the rain beat softly against the windowpanes youâre curled up in bed as it pours outside, thereâs a citywide blackout and the last candle you had left has finally blown out, but you feel strangely at peace within the warm, all-consuming dark
youâre making out in the bathroom of a house party with someone that makes you feel like youâve swallowed the sun youâre standing amidst a city you burned to the ground. the apocalypse has come & gone. all thatâs left is ashes & mortar & sad bones but youâre feeling empowered. a slow smile creeps up your lips as you realize how youâve always wanted to watch the world burn you wander into wonderland and now youâre suddenly being crowned fairie queen, apparently thereâs a prophecy waiting to be fulfilled itâs mid morning but itâs dark outside from the rain. you thought the tapping on the window was from the rain but itâs actually a crow that flickers out of sight when you look directly at it youâre sipping on cherry cola by the pool on a lazy sunday & youâre feeling younger than youâve ever been youâre summoning old ghosts in an abandoned parking lot on a smoggy thursday night

âWhat to the slave is the Fourth of July?â posed Frederick Douglass to a gathering of 500-600 abolitionists in Rochester, N.Y., in 1852. Admission to the speech was 12 cents, and the crowd at the Rochester Ladiesâ Anti-Slavery Society was enthusiastic, voting unanimously to endorse the speech at its end. This speech would be remembered as one of the most poignant addresses by Douglass, a former slave turned statesman. Douglass gave it on July 5, refusing to celebrate the Fourth of July until all slaves were emancipated.
On July 3, 165 years later, the same question was posed on a stage in the basement of the National Archives, in Washington, D.C. This time by an actor, dressed like Frederick Douglass and wearing a wig, speaking to a 100 or so people, plus the livestream audience, in the William G. McGowan Theater. The event was put on with the help of the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site, which hosts an annual reading of the speech, entitled The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro.
