In my AU, Iris basically travels through dimensions and he feeds on pain and trust to survive. That's why he goes around manipulating people so he can stay alive. Once he enters a dimension, he has to make the best of it, because when he leaves, the dimension gets destroyed.

The eyes on Neptune's face are a sign of trust, so when Iris successfully manipulates someone, they appear. Poor nep doesn't believe anyone when they tell him Iris caused it :(

Elder Kettle became very ill overnight about a month ago.

Treatments and medicines are extremely expensive because of the crisis, and it’s not like we have much money either. Even with all our savings, and selling a few things, we couldn’t afford to pay for everything.

Mugman became obsessed with his medical studies, so he started studying like a madman to push through his degree and learn how to treat Elder Kettle. Meanwhile, I spent my days out on the streets looking for work. But… there is no work. That’s the crisis.

One night, I argued with both of them. I went out for a walk to clear my head.

I ended up in the place I always ran off to when things got bad at home: the haunted cemetery. Mugman and I are forbidden to set foot there, but I went anyway, because I discovered that, ironically, it was the one place where I truly felt alive.

There, I could play the wildest melodies until the keys went flying, and no one scolded me or told me how I was supposed to be or how I was supposed to feel. Man, that place is so great… In fact, that’s where my nickname was born.

In the middle of a break, a guy came up to me and, knowing I was desperate to make some cash, whispered that he "had the perfect job for me".

Without saying a word, he took me to the casino. At first, my world collapsed. Suddenly, I was thirteen again, with the same fear of having my soul stolen. I was about to bolt, but he stopped me and convinced me. And… I went in.

Nothing has changed. Everything is the same. Only now, that place doesn’t seem so big anymore. When King Dice saw me, he almost killed me right there, in front of the blackjack table.

Before he could kick me out, that guy stepped in. Turns out he owed the casino a favor. He surrounded Dice and said, "You want your dear boss to start raking in money like in the glory days again? Then here you go. Here's your Little Jazzman. He’ll make sure people won’t want to leave while he’s on stage."

And that’s how it all began. I became the bargaining chip in a favor with interest on both sides. I have to lie to Mugsy and Elder Kettle everyday, returning home from a supposed night print shop, pretending I’d been restocking ink or sorting newspapers… but all I really want is to be useful, at least for them.

“We used to live in the woods. Mugman and I had the best childhood in the world there. But our mother wanted us to move to our grandfather’s duplex in the city because she felt like his time in this world was running short, and she wanted to spend her final years by his side. But Grandpa’s still going strong! Sometimes that man seems more full of life than we are. We moved when we were fifteen. The city is great because we’re close to civilization, but sometimes I miss the countryside. Things were simpler there. But we really do like it here!”
