Ninternia: The Ultimate Elemental
Chapter 9: From Ice to Life
"Hey, I don't think freezing yourself will unlock your powers," Khan said, joining Cyrus outside in the snow ."If that was how it worked, I would've just set myself on... nevermind." He sighed, and kicked at the frost under his feet. It had only been a day since the fire. A place that had withstood the test of time, destroyed in a few hours. Cyrus felt a tightness in his chest whenever he thought about it. Perhaps he was malfunctioning.
Not to mention the missing pieces the siltharaa had taken. They weren't sure how to get those back yet. The backup plan was if they didn't run into the snakes again, they'd go to the waterfall door Shadow had found. Khan was not happy about that plan.
A frigid breeze blew down the mountain, causing his companion to shiver a little. As a robot, or rather nindroid Cyrus didn't react to the cold, and strangely, neither did the reason he was out here.
Shadow just sat far above them, on the branch of a snow covered fir tree, her cloak flapping in the wind. You could see the disturbances in the snow where she had climbed, yet it still looked almost impossible to reach her perch, and Cyrus had seen her get there.
"Why are watching her?" Khan asked.
"I was built to protect those who cannot protect themselves," he stated. "Someone should supervise her, she is a child. What if she falls?"
"If she falls?" Khan scoffed. "She thinks she's a squirrel! And I'm sure she can pro-HEY!" He yelled as a branch dumped its share of snow on him. Shadow, who had jumped on it causing the white powder to fall, landed on her feet beside them.
She looked at Khan "Careful what you say. You never know who's listening."
"See?" Khan said, trying to get the snow out of his hair "No protection needed."
"Sure, if you want to freeze," Katara said, throwing a black parka at each of them as she came out of the bus. "But if you'd rather not, I'd wear the jacket."
"That wasn't what I was talking about," he muttered, shrugging it on. The rest of the Guardians soon joined them, all dressed in the parkas, each trimmed in their respective colors. Katara herself only wore a plain, black cloak like Shadow's atop her gi. Atalie followed, shivering in her thin long sleeve.
"The third piece of the Blade of Elements is, well, the blade. The Vault is at the top of Tuinval Mountain, the tallest mountain in Ninternia." Atalie explained, "No human that's attempted the climb was ever seen again."
"There's a reason for that, " Katara said." Tuinval Mountain is the home of the winter contingent of the Last Liegion, or, in other words, the last home of the winter elves. Well, that and the subzero tempatures."
"That's where you grew up?" Jaya asked.
"Not exactly." Katara replied. "Anyways, I'm sure you've noticed how warm the jackets are. They should keep you from freezing. I also worked a technoband into the right sleeve. It's not as high-tech as mine, but it has a grappling hook, spike, and a couple other things for the climb. There's also a communication device worked into the hood so we can hear each other over the wind. Any questions?"
Cyrus watched as they put the new jackets on. Clay's was trimmed in orange, Khan's in red, Jaya: turquoise, Ren had blue, and Shadows was all black. The young girl had to take off her cape to put it on and she didn't seem happy about it. Cyrus's own trim was ice blue.
"May I asist you with that?" R.A.L.I. inquired, approaching Cyrus.
"Of c-course," he stammered, allowing her to help him put the parka on. After she'd zippered it up, she stood there for a second, just looking at him, before going back inside. It was only the Cyrus realized he was holding his breath.
Wait... I do not require oxygen.
He frowned, perplexed. He really needed to get Katara to do a full systems diagnostic. He was about to call for her when a sudden movement caught his optical sensors.
Cyrus looked up to see Katara lying in the show, Clay on top of her as he'd dove into her. Where Katara's head had been was a grappling hook, now buried in the wood of a tree.
"Oops, my bad" Shadow said innocently.
Katara glared at her as Clay helped her up, both of them brushing off show. The others exchanged looks. None of them were sure if Shadow had simply been testing her technoband, and misfired, or if... they'd just witnessed an attempted murder.
Ren coughed, "So..."
"The jackets are powered by a fire sapphire, an elven gem. It's in the reinforced pocket. If you open it..." Katara trailed off, looking straight at Shadow as if daring her to see what would happen.
"Okay, how about we spread out and practise?" Jaya said before Shadow could do anything. As they started climbing short ways up the cliff and dropping back down, Cyrus approached Katara.
"Could you run a diagnostic on me?" he asked her.
"Sure, something wrong?" she tapped at one of her technobands.
"I have been feeling unfamiliar sensations of late, such as a fluttering in my chest, losing my train of thought, and, most recently, a tightness, like my core is being squeezed."
Katara paused and looked at him. "R.A.L. I. around whenever you feel the first two?"
"Yes."
"And the tightness, did that start after the fire?"
"Affirmative."
She gave him a small smile. "Nothing wrong with you Cyrus. Those are just natural reactions to love and loss."
"But... I am a machine. I am incapable of feeling emotions."
"You're a lot more capable than you think, more so than some other people. Now come on, we should start climbing. We don't want to get stuck on the cliff face overnight." As she and the others began their final preperations, Cyrus just ste there, thinking; she's wrong I'm not like them. I'm not alive. I can't feel.
No matter how much I want to...
Hours later, he was much more concerned with physical ways of feeling rather than emotional ones. They were thousands of feet above the ground, clinging to the rock face in the middle of a blizzard. Cyrus was just wondering why he was capable of feeling such cold when something grabbed his arm, and pulled him into the mountain.
He yelped, but quieted after realizing it was just Katara, who had been ahead him. She gave the others the same treatment. Clay and Jaya were startled a bit. Khan screamed and flailed around in the show before coming to his senses. Ren freaked out and fell, so they had to pull him back up. It was a good thing they'd tied themselves together. Shadow on the other hand...
"What the-" she rolled while holding Katara's arm, using the momentum to throw the poor elf into a nearby snowbank
"Kat!" Clay shouted, going to help her while Ren and Khan cracked up.
"I think we're going to get along," Khan told Shadow. She glared at him, then flicked her wrist. Next thing they knew, a knife was pinning his hand to a nearby tree.
"Keep telling yourself that," she said.
"Are we at the village?" Jaya asked, changing the topic.
"Not yet," Katara replied, spitting out snow and glaring at Shadow. "Come on."
After they released Khan from the tree, they continued their journey into mountain peak. Looking up, Cyrus could see a widening strip of sky that looked blue instead of cloudy. As for the rift itself, the entrance was narrow, about a foot wide, but the walls soon began to open up.
It was warmer inside the crack, likely because there was no wind. Small trees and bushes grew here and there. The snowfall was light, just enough to cover the ground in a pristine white blanket. It was so peaceful...
"When we get there, follow my lead. My kind don't trust humans and with good reason. You'll be the first humans to step foot in it as far as I know. Anyways, just be on your best behavior," Katara finished.
"This group? Never," Shadow smirked.
"Never say never," Ren grinned
"Why not? You just said it twice," she countered.
"Ooo, she got you there Sparky." Khan snickered.
"You're just jealous I have powers and you don't!" Ren shouted back.
"Just wait till we finish the Blade, then we'll see who's jealous!" Khan spat.
"Wait... you think you're going to be the Ultimate Elemental? Oh, this is rich" Shadow laughed.
"How? I'm perfect for it," Khan glared, a little miffed that a little kid was laughing at him.
Before anyone could respond, seven white clad figures surrounded them, some from the snow, others from above. Each of them held a knife, and had a bow and quiver of arrows slung across their back. One of them stepped forward, jabbing their knife into Khan, ice blue eyes boring into his warm hazel ones.
"How do you know of the Blade of Elements?" they hissed in a low voice.
"Leave him alone," Katara answered, stepping between them. Thankfully, the knife hadn't done any damage. The Guardians tensed, unsure if they were going to fight or not.
To their surprise, the one who'd Khan pulled down his hood and face mask, revealing a surprised looking, raven haired elf.
"Katara?" he whispered. She froze, then pulled her own hood back. Next thing Cyrus knew, the two elves were hugging each other and talking in a strange language. The rest of the elves relaxed, and put their weapons away.
"So... they're friendly?" Ren asked.
"Yes" Katara said, "Everyone this is my uncle Levi. He-"
Cyrus never heard the rest of sentence because someone grabbed behind and pulled him...
Into the rock?
"Some advice, if anyone grabs you from behind, resist." Shadow said, dragging from him along a passageway carved into the rock. The blue tinted rock. The reflective, blue tinted rock. That was cold to touch.
Oh, it was ice. The further along they got, the more reflective the wall's became. Soon, the floor became too slippery too run, but instead of slowing down, Shadow started skating. More or less helpless to stop, Cyrus just let her pull him, watching the strange phenomena of the walls reflecting each other into infinity.
It was somewhat mesmerizing to watch. Whenever he looked, there was hall after hall, identical to the one they were in. Strings of bioluminescent microorganisms were frozen in the ice, giving off an odd light, only adding to the uncanny beauty. And of course each hall had its own Shadow and Cyrus. The nindroid found himself wondering if one of them were the real ones and he was the reflection.
"Whoa, slow down Dreamer Bot!" Shadow called as she let go of his hand, flinging him forward....
Straight toward a ravine.
In a panic, Cyrus grabbed for the doorway, and managed to swing himself sideways. He promptly crashed into wall.
Shadow skated over to him. "I don't suppose you know how to get across?"
"I do not even know our current location," He said, getting up.
She rolled her eyes. "Where do you think?"
Cyrus frowned, attempting to run a scan through the place so he could match it to somewhere in his data base, and... failed. Or perhaps he didn't. He knew where he was now.
"The Blade Vault."
"Maybe there's hope for you yet." Shadow said.
He blinked, then turned his attention back to the chasm. It was too deep to see the bottom, too wide to jump across, and everything was sheer ice, impossible to climb. Across it, Cyrus saw a flight of stairs leading up. There was also the remains of a bridge, a few feet of ice sticking out on either end.
"Any ideas?" she asked.
He shook his head. "I am useless here... Something shuts down modern technology."
"It's all the elemental energy, boosted by the Blade piece. The air's so thick with it, I can almost feel it." Shadow answered, "But that doesn't matter. You can still brainstorm."
"Why would-"
"I meant come up with ideas."
"Oh," Cyrus watched as she sat down an the edge of the cham, lege dangling over the darkness, muttering nonsense under her breath. He didn't make any suggestions. She was a smart girl, and had no lack of ideas. Despite her being over ten years his younger, she'd probably solve this quicker without him. Without his systems, he was nothing more than a fancy toy.
"Well?" Shadow asked him.
"Could you repeat your query?" Cyrus inquired sheepishly.
Is my audio system not functioning as well?
She rolled her eyes. "I was asking if you'd come up with anything because I don't want to get the others when we could bring it back, and rub it Lady Lectures-a-lot and Hedgehead's faces."
Cyrus blinked.
She sighed. "Katara and Khan,"
"Oh."
"So?"
"I do not have any ideas."
"You have to have something."
"Why do you keep saying that?" Cyrus asked quietly.
"What?"
"Why do you think I have ideas? I am robot, a piece of machinery. My mind is made up of ones and zeros, just programming. I cannot feel, or ever think for myself. Without my other systems, I am nothing," he finished, staring into the void.
"Dunno, you seem pretty sad right now," Shadow commented.
"I-what?"
"And now you seem surprised, little insulted, a bit disbelieving, and confused. Now that think about it, you're confused a lot of the time. Not that I blame you, humans are confusing. Been one my whole life and I still don't get them."
He frowned. "You do not understand. Those are merely simulations of emotions my creator programmed into me so I could seem more human."
"What'd he 'program' you to do?"
"I am built to protect those who cannot protect themselves."
"How can you protect if you can't care?"
"I-But... but..." Cyrus stammered she was wrong. She had to be. Dozens of people over the years had told him he couldn't feel, they couldn't all be incorrect. It was statistically impossible, yet...
If that was true...
Then why did Shadow sound so...
Right?
"Butts are for sitting," she decided.
Cyrus couldn't help it, he laughed. It had been so unexpected, so ridiculous, so simple, that it was perfect.
Shadow smirked. "See? You can laugh too!" She met his eyes. While her face was still locked in a sneer something in her deep green eyes made him question if she was still just trying to make him question his exsistance, or if she was actually trying to help him when she added; "I think the only thing that's stopping you, is that you don believe you can."
Cyrus stared at her, trying to process what she'd just said. For such a long time, as long as he could remember, he'd been told the exact opposite. He could even remember the day he'd stopped trying to feel.
He'd been meditating in a pond when he'd heard a muffled shriek. He'd kicked to the surface. When he'd emerged he'd seen a little girl speeding down a hill on a bike. She was out of control, and heading towards a busy street. A woman in a lab coat was chasing after her, screaming for her to stop.
Cyrus had pulled himself out of the water, and cut the child off, tackling her into the grass. She's been crying, hiding her face from him. She wore a lavender, grass stained hoodie, a pair of thick gloves, jeans, and dirty, purple, sneakers with untied laces.
By this time the woman had caught up with them. "Minnie?! Onh, Minnie, you're okay! You scared me." She'd sobbed as she'd embraced the child. She'd turned to Cyrus, her expresion thankful...
Until she saw him
A look of horror had come over her face. "Get away from us!" Shed screamed
He'd been so confused. "Ma'am, I'm just trying to help, please-"
"I said get away! No machine could ever care enough to help without being told. You all just do what you're programmed to! I know that now, after - Just go!"
Since that day, Cyrus had never stayed after helping anyone, never remaining in one place for too long. Not until Master Ju had found him, and trained him. He'd changed so much because of one little girl.
And now, here was another making him question himself all over again. Now there was only one thing to do. He needed to know what he wanted. Did he want to be an emotionless droid, or take a chance at being human?
Was it even a choice?
He closed his eyes, and took a deep breath, searching his mind, breaking every barrier he'd built over the years, and just letting himself feel. Before he understood what was happening, a flood of familiar images he didn't quite recall flooded his mind.
A young man holding him tightly, running through a snowy forest.
The same man, now middle-aged, smiling with pride as Cyrus played with a flying prisimfin.
A very old version of the man, lying in a bed, whispering something to Cyrus, "You'll remember when you're ready. Farewell my son, I wish you the same love and happiness you gave me..."
The man was his creator, his father: Ty Julian. Before he could process what that meant, another wave of emotions hit him, and this one made him collapse.
Pain
Loss
Sorrow
The man flipped a switch on Cyrus's chest, then his eyes closed a final time as he took his last, shuddering breath...
For a second, Cyrus felt a sense of loss and loneliness too big to comprehend.
Then he felt...
Emptiness.
Blackness.
Nothing.
It was like he was trapped a freezing void. He was completely numb. There was no point to do anything. Only to go through the motions. The cold seeped into him, and took away his senses.
He didn't feel any drive.
Any determination.
Any reason why he did anything.
He just...
Did it.
Years flashed before his eyes, lost in this haze. He didn't think it would ever end.
Suddenly, a memory flashed in his mind, of when they were racing through the maze under Lyra, laughing. Other memories of the others poured through his mind.
Ren showing him how to play video games.
Khan talking to him about R.AL.I.
Katara maintaining him.
Jaya explaining the others jokes.
Clay always checking up on him.
Even cold, distant Shadow leading to him to this point.
A warmth began to spread through him, chasing any trace of the numbing cold.
I am Cyrus Zen Julian, creation and son of Dr. Ty Julian, and a pair of the Guardians, my... family.
As soon as he thought the last word, a new set of images fell into his mind, but these ones were strange, blurry, forgien.
Katara slumped in red puddle inside a transparent silver dome.
Half of his power source in the back of a metal hand.
A complete Blade of Elements landing in the intersection of Nelson and LuMonica.
A shadow trapped in a web of lightning, ice, fire, earth, and so many things exploding in light.
His eyes flew open and he bolted upright.
"Took you long enough," grumbled Shadow. "You gonna make a new ice bridge, or what?"
"What?" Cyrus asked, disorientated by everything he'd just been through. "You just unlocked. Fix the bridge."
"...."
He quickly realized she was right.
He could sense a new... energy in his mind. He stepped up to the edge of the bridge, and reached out with it... only to create a layer of ice on an existing bridge.
"You've got to be kidding me," Shadow groaned. "It was there the whole time!?! I listened to all that for nothing!?" She yelled out at nothing, before never doing that again.
"Can't stop me," she muttered under her breath, causing Cyrus to look at her in confusion.
When she didn't elaborate, he said, "It appears to be made of the same reflective ice as earlier, making it seem like there is nothing there because of the darkness above and below it. Ingenious."
"I can't decide if that's straight up brilliant, or downright cruel," she said in response, stalking across the bridge. Cyrus just smiled slightly as he followed her across then up the stairs.
Why was he so calm?
Because that last set of memories weren't memories at all, but rather visions of what was to come, and if he played it right, he could bring an end to this fight.
"Wow..." Cyrus breathed, as they emerged from the stairway. As it turned out, the never before seen by human eyes Tuinval Peak was a ring of stone and ice. The center of it was sunken hundreds of feet down. Within that crater was the last winter elven village.
Cyrus could see the elves homes, some of which were carved half into the cliff, but, thanks to the high walls, it was already dark down there, and there were twinkling lights scattered throughout the buildings. In the center of the village, and by that extent, the mountain, was a tall rock formation reaching all the way up to their level. On the top of it rest a pavilion carved out of ice, inlaid with gemstones. A bridge led from the outer ring to the pavilion, where Cyrus located the blade piece. It was a magical sight, right out of a fairy tale, but it was nothing compared to the view surrounding them.
They were so high up, the storm clouds that had given them much trouble lay below them, surrounding the peak in a fluffy blanket. It looked like a lone island in an endless sea of clouds, tinted in pinks, lavenders, and oranges as the sun began to set. The sky itself was so many colors, Cyrus wondered if he was looking at a rainbow. It was completely breath taking.
I wonder if a moment can last forever... He wondered as he stood on the pavilion, turning slowly, trying to see everything at once.
"Why haven't you grabbed the blade yet? It's freezing up here," Shadow grumbled, ruining the moment. Cyrus sighed as he went to retrieve it. Despite her comment, she didn't look the slightest bit cold. He made a replica of the blade out of ice, and switched them.
"Now we get to do all of that in reverse, yay." she complained, but then a sly smile spread across her face. Cyrus wasn't sure he trusted it.
"What?" he asked hesitantly.
"Do you like sledding?"
Dragons Rising really is the best sequel series for diehard Lloyd enjoyers, cause, yes, we acknowledge that he has panic attacks, crappy mental health, and also he's the grandson of God, but you know what really gets me? Lloyd is tired.
He's plagued with migraines (the visions are also migraines don't @ me), he's bemoaning about never getting a good nights sleep, hes struggling so hard to be a good leader and clearly doesn't have all the answers, and he's just some 20yo who's been cursed with saving the world since he was younger than his own students.
That's the realest way Lloyd could've ever been written in a future-series. It's what he is. But he's not angry (usually), he's not telling everyone to deal with it themselves, and he's not giving up. I love when Lloyd has finally had enough, but the real, genuine Lloyd? He'd never stop caring. He cares so much it'd kill him. He's tired and by god does he refuse to quit. I love that kid. Please get him a warm blanket
^Whole heartedly agree ^
Shadow Kaida Out of Context
"That was fun. Who doesn't love staying up all night putting out a fire, then spilling secrets that shouldn't be… secret?"
"You either read too many comic books, or watch an insane amount of cartoons. Or both. Yeah I'd say both. Oh, add video games to that."
"Would you look at that, elfy's finally awake. Did you enjoy your beauty sleep? It didn't do you much good."
"A… teapot?"
"I've told you what I know, do whatever you want with it."
"Okay, let's get this straight, don't treat me like a kid, and won't prove to you I'm not."
"Let me guess… You spent the whole time we were talking trying to come up with a line, and you only interrupted now because you thought of that not-half-bad one?"
"Do you like sledding?"
"I can't decide if that's straight up brilliant, or downright cruel,"
"I was asking if you'd come up with anything because I don't want to get the others when we could bring it back, and rub it Lady Lectures-a-lot and Hedgehead's faces."
"Some advice, if anyone grabs you from behind, resist."
"If Lady Lectures-a-lot is cool with it then I'm sure I'll be fine."
"It's a scabbard. That's what it's for,"
"That guy was toying with us. If he'd wanted, we'd all be dead right now"
"I'm going to go clean my sword before the blood dries."
"Is that a fish,"
"I won't kill you."
"I'm more serious than you could ever dream of being."
" 'Give me a chance to explain.' I thought people only said that in books and movies, unless you took it from one."
A Shattered Shadow
Booyakasha. Lyric from "Lost" by Linkin Park. Character it Shadow Kaida from Ninternia
The same promise played out on two scenes. One true but unreachable. One within reach but a lie. The same but different. One but two.
Which would you chose?
To be submerged in lies, whether from others or self-told, but content?
Or endlessly trying to achieve an ideal that, deep down, you know you'll never accomplish?

Ninternia: The Ultimate Elemental. Prologue
The hooded figure glanced over their shoulder. Carefully, they made their way through the library. It had been many years since they'd last traversed Eleternia freely, so before they could begin their long awaited plans, they needed a bit of information on the current book off a ways of the world. Slipping a thick shelf, they set it down on a window sill, and began reading by moonlight.
Long before time had a name the First Elemental created Ninternia. In addition to the myriad of plants and animals of the realm, he also made a higher race to watch over them: the humans.
Unlike the common beast, humans had the ability to build, dream, create like no other. As a gift to his greatest creations the First Elemental granted parts of his own powers to certain humans. These chosen ones, and their descendants, were able to manipulate the elements, and became known as the Elemental Guardians.
All Guardians gre trained at the Temple of Elements, which lies not far outside Ninternia City. Over the years each line of Guardians built a legacy around their accomplishments, and each founded one of Ninternia's main cities, except for the capital. Ninternia City was founded by our realm's first emperor, a title that has been handed down in an unbroken chain since the time of the First Elemental...
As the figure closed the book, a cold laugh escaped their mouth. There was no reason to read anything else. They'd expected as much from their enemies, but they'd been far more through then they'd hoped.
"Humans," the figure hissed quietly, "will drown in their own ignorance. How fitting."
My new years resolution was to finish the first Eleternia book. I've wrote a ton this year so far. I've planned out the next two books in detail, started rewriting the already half done first book, and started writing the second 🤦♀️
Ninternia: The Ultimate Elemental.
Chapter 1: Aspiring Villains Academy
Aspiring Villains Academy, or AVA as the students. called it, was a strange school. It was supposed to be the training ground for the next generation of "bad guys" but in reality, It was just a place where the current arsonists, thieves, and crime lords could leave their kids and forget about them. As a result, the students at the boarding school tended to be bratty bullies rather than actual evil masterminds. They were taught more about the comic book idea of evil than true darkness.
Soran was just one of many students who'd never known any home other than the school. He had fair skin, and was fairly skinny. His teeth were in desperate need of a dentist, due to numerous fights and a love of candy. He had wide black eyes and a small nose, making him look younger then the ten years of age he actually was. The only pleasing thing about his appearance was his thick, slightly wavey, golden blond hair. Not that he liked it. It caused him to be a bit of a target since "only heroes have golden hair"
Ducking his head Sonam pulled his hood lower to hide his blond locks. When they'd been asked create their villain uniform in sowing dass made sure to add the hood in the hope less kids would make fun of him. The rest of his outfit consisted of black pants and a long sleeve shirt with a skeleton printed on it, completed by a black cape with the previously mentioned hood. It wasn't the fanciest costume, but he'd been going for the "simplistic" look. He definitely hadn't thrown it together an hour before it was due.
Ducking into Mrs. Numbskull's science class, he breathed sigh of relief as he sat down right before the bell rang. Despite being taught that rules were made to be broken, punishments could be harsh.
"Students," Mrs. Numbskull rasped we have a new student with us today. This is Shadow Kaida."
A girl of about his own age strode into the room right on cue, Like Soran, she the skinny side of the spectrum, but while he was all knees and elbows, Shadow was simply lithe, like a cat. She had a pale, almost white, complexion, which contrasted strikingly with her inky black braid. Under arched eyebrows were two evergreen eyes, flashing dangerously as they scanned the room. To top it all off, she was wearing a loose, all black outfit that he'd never seen the like of before, and he was surrounded by wannabe supervillains. There was was no shortage of weird black outfits at AVA.
"Why's she wearing pajamas?" Soran whispered to the kid behind him. Next thing he knew was a sharp pain on his temple.
"OW!"he yelped, turning to find Shadow a foot away, her hand raised.
"Sorry did I-," she stopped abruptly when she saw his face, and a flicker of surprise passed over hers.
"What?" Soran spat at her, rubbing his ear.
"N-nothing," she muttered, taking the empty desk in front of him, looking strangely shaken. Soran just slid down his chair pouting.
Just great, the new kids already making fun of me too. Don't they know who I am!? I'll show them one day... I'll show them all...
A few weeks later, he was a little closer to "showing them all." He had his first henchman, er, henchgirl: Shadow. Soran wasn't entirely sure why she chose to hang out with him, (Maybe because of his natural villain charisma?) but he wasn't complaining. Every evil mastermind needed a second-in-command to boss around and blame when everything went wrong.
"You ready yet?" Shadow said, poking her head into the boys dorm.
"You're not allowed in here!" Soran shouted.
"I go where I want!" Shadow retorted. He slammed the closet door and shoved her out of his way as the left the dorm.
"Do you ever wear anything else?!" he asked her. She was still wearing the same pajama thing she'd worn on her first day. Definitely not proper henchman attire.
Shadow gave him a look, "It's not like you wear anything other than your rip off skeleton costume."
"Hey! I'll have you know that this is a first rate supervillain uniform designed to strike tan in the hearts of-"
"Fashion designers?" she interrupted. He glared at her as they entered the classroom.
"Shadow, Soran, how nice of you to finally join us. I hope your lateness doesn't extend to your homework, otherwise have to send you to detention," Mrs. Numbskull said, looking at them over her glasses. Soran winced as Shadow set a sheaf of papers on the teacher's desk and went to her seat.
Thinking quickly, he said, "I would've had it done if... if I hadn't had to do Shadow's. It was also her fault we were late she was, um, doing her hair."
Mrs. Numbskull glanced at Shadow, who's hair was, as always, in a complicated, but perfect, braid.
"In that case," the teacher said, "detention for both of you. Shadow for not doing her homework and caring about how she looks, and you for helping her."
With a quick nod, Soran went to take his seat. He didn't care that he'd lied to get Shadow in trouble with him, he just didn't want to work alone. Anyways, it's not like she'd care. She didn't care about anything.
Or so he thought, completely missing the betrayed look Shadow shot him.
"Are you gonna help?" Shadow asked, flicking warm, soapy water at him. For detention, she Soran had been sent to clean the dungeons under the school.
"I'm supervising," he said, raising his arm to protect his face from the droplets. She gave him an exasperated look.
"It's your fault I'm even here!" She said.
"So?"
"You could at least run a wet piece of cloth across the wall."
"That's your job. l'm not doing a servant's work. l've got royal blood."
Shadow's face went hard as she wrung out her towel fiercely, and turned back to the wall.
"Forget it," she said. Soran just shrugged, and scooped a handful of suds out of the bucket. Sculpting the white foam into random shapes, he started pacing up and down the corridor. Staying still wasn't one of his strong suits. As time continued to pass, he resorted to studying the walls out of boredom.
"Are you done yet?" he asked.
"No." Shadow said shortly.
"Hey, I found something."
"If you say I missed a spot-"
"No, I actually found something. Take a look," he stepped aside to show her a .....
Brick.
"Soran Zhong, I swear to -"
"Oh shut up," he said and pushed the brick down. A grating sound resonated through the corridor as a section of the wall slid back and to the side to reveal a hidden passage way. Shadow stepped forward, gazing searchingly into the shadowed hall.
"How did you know? The brick didn't look any different than the others," she said.
"It was. There was a carving of the dark part of that one symbol. Y'know the one for dark and light or something?" he said, tracing a circle in the air.
"The yin yang symbol" Shadow said quietly.
"Yeah, that thing," he said, waving her off and heading down the passage, "Coming?"
He heard a sigh accompanied by her characteristic almost silent footsteps. Knowing she was following him, Soran turned his attention back to the passage way It was pretty dark, since the only light came from the torches outside, but he could still see well enough. Not that there was much to see. The floors, walls, and ceiling were made of smooth, grey stone. If you turned it on its side, or even upside down, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
Before long the passage opened up into a large, dark room. Three of the four walls were covered in shelves all of them crammed with stuff. Some of the objects were familiar, such as books, helmets, and jewelery, but others were strange, alien. He saw an egg shaped sphere on a pedestal, it's surface hard and opalescent as big as his head; there was another peculiar thing made up of three levels connected be reflective, spiral wound supports, and that was only a few of the weird artifacts.
The fourth wall, the one opposite of the door way, was covered in pictures, weapons, and mirrors. Of the pictures: there were terrifying beasts, dark fortresses, and strangely dressed men and women. Of the weapons: there were males, spears, and staffs, but most of all, there were ornate, jeweled swords and daggers of varying size. As for the mirrors... Soran caught a glimpse of his reflection in one. It was somehow both him and yet not him at the same time. He shivered and moved to a spot where none of the mirrors could reach him.
Suddenly, a flare of light momentarily blinded him as his eyes adjusted from the dark to light. Blinking, he managed to focus on the source of the light: Shadow holding a flaming torch.
"Why'd you light that thing? It wasn't that dark in here," Soran said, then paused as a thought occured to him, "wait a sec... how did you light it? Do you carry around matches or something?"
Ignoring the second and third questions, Shadow said, "I don't know what your mean, it was almost pitch black in here. I had to feel around to find this."
"Hmmm... well anyways, let's look around. There has to be something cool in here," he said, grabbing a twisted sword with a black leather hilt off the wall and swinging it around. Before he could do anything else with it, Shadow took it from him, gave it a practised twirl, then returned it to the wall, leaving Soran staring at her.
"Where'd you learn to do that!?" he said, trying to mimic her move with a large, tightly wound scroll. She watched him with a faintly amused expression.
"I had a life before coming here, and I I think you should put that down. Pretty sure no one's ever cut themselves waving around a scroll but... nothing's impossible," she said.
Distracted by her tease, Soran said, "Very funny. I'm sure plenty of people have gotten paper cuts from this thing. It's ancient."
Shadow chuckled "Usually you talk like a stuck up bully, but every now and then you say something pretty good."
He gave her a blank look. Still laughing, she picked up a scroll of her own, and attacked him with it. Startled, he got hit twice before he raised his scroll in defense, but it wasn't long before his laughter joined hers, even though he was hopelessly out matched. Shadows skill with a sword, er, scroll was so good, she managed to school him at the same time. Soran lost track of time as they continued to spar with the rolls of paper, and it came surprisingly easy to him. He went for a sudden sneak attack, yet she quickly blocked it, and disarmed him.
"Hey! You broke it!" he said as it flew out of his hand, unrolling when it hit the wall.
"It's a scroll windbag, it's supposed to do that, "Shadow replied.
"Oh, uh- right," he muttered, and went to go pick it up. Curiously, he unrolled it the rest of the way to see what was on it. A wide smile came over his face when he saw its contents.
"Hey Shadow, check this out," he said. She walked over and looked over his shoulder.
"Its a map of Ninternia. Why should I care about that?" she asked.
"Because" Soran said, running his hands. across the ancient parchment, over mountains, forests, and rivers, holding all of Ninternia under his hand before he stopped over a strange symbol not far from AVA," it's a treasure map, and with your help, the treasure will be mine."
Ninternia: The Ultimate Elemental
Chapter 2: One Fateful Night
"How are you not cold?" Jaya asked her brother, shivering in a light weight black gi. Khan glanced over at her. He was wearing an identical outfit, but was barely bothered by the cold mountain air.
"Can I help it if I'm hot?" he asked grinning. Jaya groaned. His sister shared his light tan skin, full lips, and perfect teeth, but the similarities ended there. While Jaya had eyes as deep as the sea, Khan's were a warm hazel. Her hair was long and black, and was usually kept in a messy bun. His hair was a luscious, shining brown, styled into a perfect, spiky do. With an age difference of three years, Khan was notably taller than his sister. The biggest difference between the siblings wasn't in their natural looks though. While Jaya preferred function over fashion, her brother looked good, and he was well aware of it.
Choosing to change the subject rather than argue with him, Jaya asked, "What do you think Sensei Ju has planned?"
"Not sure," Khan replied, "Didn't he say something about a test?"
"Yeah, to see if we're ready for the next level."
Their conversation died out after that as Jaya began doing light exercises to warm up, and Khan started scrolling through social media on his phone. Ever since Sensei Ju had found them about a month ago, revealing that he'd trained their parents, and offering to teach them in the way of the ninja, Khan had taken to making regular posts about his training on his PostAPic, or PaP as its users called it , account and to his surprise, he'd gained a decent amount of followers.
Taking a selfie, using the moonlit temple and starry sky as his background, he posted it with the caption "Mysterious test tonight. Any guesses on what?" Before anyone could comment, someone kicked his arm, hard.
"Oof, my phone..." Khan groaned as it flew out of his hand. At the same time, he fell into a defensive stance and faced his attacker. They were much taller than him, and wore an all black gi identical to his, down to the hood that was obscuring their face and Khan didn't like to wear because of what it did to his hair. Khan decided to call him Ninja 1. Off to his left, another one was trading blows with Jaya. Aside from being shorter than the first, and having blue eyes rather than grey, plus lighter skin they were identical. Okay, fine, they weren't identical, but they were wearing the same outfit. Khan named the new one Ninja 2. Dodging under a roundhouse kick from Ninja 1, Khan countered with a punch to the gut, and a quick footsweep, knocking them down. Following them to the ground, Khan put them into a pin, and would've choked Ninja 1 out if something hitting the ground hadn't startled him from behind. As it was, Ninja 1 used his distraction to throw him off. Khan rolled to his feet next to Jaya. Glancing at the newcomer, Khan noted same black gi, and... metallic skin?
Is he wearing a mask or something?
"Another one?" Ninja 2 groaned.
At this point, the five of them were standing in a circle facing each other, waiting to see who would make the first move. Khan thought that the tension was thick enough to touch. Before anyone could attack, the Temple doors slammed open, startling all of them.
"What in my father's name is going out here!?" an old man yelled angrily as he stepped out into the moonlit courtyard. His golden eyes were slanted, with crinkles at the corner showing he smiled a lot, though he certainly wasn't now. Under his wide brimmed hat, was bald head, but his long white beard. more than made up for it. He wore a traditional white gi, with a stylized lotus on the back, and smaller one over his heart, as well as a simple black belt around his waist. To complete his "old, stern sensei" look, he " and carried a wore sandals, bamboo staff. All this, accompanied by an ever present teapot, made up their dear old Sensei Ju.
"Um... I found these guys sneaking into the Temple Sensei," Ninja 3, the metallic one, said.
"I was sneaking in? You were the ones doing all the sneaking!" Ninja 1 replied.
"You're both wrong! My sister and I were just waiting here when you three attacked us!!!" Khan shouted back.
"What did you mean by 'in my father's name'?" Jaya asked, and got all the others staring at her for the sudden subject change. Meanwhile, Sensei Ju looked to the sky as if asking for help before he started speaking.
"You all grew up on stories of the Elemental Guardians, the fabled protectors of Ninternia, yet what you did not know is that you are all descendants of these legendary heroes. That is why I sought you out," he said the paused to see how they'd take the news.
"You mean... I HAVE ELEMENTAL POWERS!?!" Ninja 2 said, throwing off his hood to reveal a flushed, sweaty face, adorned toy a pair of wide sky blue eyes, a small, upturned nose, a spray of freckles, and an astonished grin. By a mop of messy, reddish-brown hair "OH-MY-GOSH!! WHICH-DO-I-HAVE!? I COULD-" he proceeded in listing number of past Guardians, along with whatever feat they accomplished.
Khan chose to tune him out, and focus on what the others were sayin
"-trained my mom. Are you telling me she a Guardian?" Ninja 1, who had taken his hood too, showing messy black hair plastered to his wet brown skin with sweat, thick eye brows, and cheek bones, said in a distressed voice.
"Yes, in fact, Iris was one of my best students," Sensei Ju said, "Now, Ren if you'll stop, I'll tell the rest of why I gathered you here."
"Yes Sensei," Ninja-er, Ren said sheepishly as he kneeled. The others followed his example as Ju began to speak.
"It has long been my duty to find and train each new generation of Guardians, teaching them how to unlock and use their powers. Every single Guardian has been trained here, at the Temple of Elements. Jaya, earlier, you asked why I said in the name of my father. Now, I give you the answer." He pulled a necklace with the white half of a yin-yang symbol out of his collar, and held it out to them.
"I am the younger son of The First Elemental, creator of Ninternia. My father created my brother and I out of his own blood, poured from a wound he inflicted upon himself. We were supposed to protect the balance after he passed but... it was not to be. The sword my father cut himself with, the Blade of Elements, became imbued with his power after touching his blood. My brother and I were supposed to protect it until my father's true heir could claim it, but my brother... he became convinced that we should use the Blade to change Ninternia for the better. Despite the fact that we could only use the Blade safely together, when I refused, he stole it"
"I found it right outside the Temple gate a week later. What he did with it, or how it got there, I may never know, but I knew I couldn't risk him taking it ever again, so I gathered together the Guardians of the time, and we broke the Blade into four pieces, and created four vaults to hide them: the scabbard Vault, the Hilt Vault the Blade Vault, and the Tip Vault."
"This was a little over a century ago. I haven't heard anything from my brother since, but lately, I've been sensing a shift in the balance, and having visions of my father. Something big is coming, something that will change Ninternia forever. Whether for good or ill, I cannot say, but what I do know is that it's time for my father's heir, the Ultimate Elemental, to rise, and for the next generation of Elemental Guardians to unlock their powers." A quiet fell over them as Ju finished his story and the young Guardians digested the information.
Khan glanced at the others. Jaya had a thoughtful frown on her face that he knew well. Ren looked like he was going to explode with excitement. Ninja 1's face went from stunned to determined before his eyes. Ninja 3 still wore his mask, concealing his expression.
Breaking the silence, Jaya asked, "Sensei, you said it's time for your father's heir to rise, but how are we supposed to know who the Ultimate Elemental is in the first place?"
"If you choose to accept, your first job will be to retrieve the four Blade pieces. The Blade of Elements will then reveal its next wielder, " Ju explained.
"Okay, now for the important question; WHO HAS WHICH ELEMENT!?!" Ren said.
Ju rose and stood before Khan and said "First, I give you Khan Lenori, Guardian of Fire. Next is his sister, Jaya Lenori, Guardian of Water. Then Clay Brooks, Guard of Earth. After that, Ren Walker, Guardian of Lightning, Finally, Cyrus Julian, Guardian of Ice." As Cyrus's, Ninja 3, name left Sensei Ju's lips, he finally threw back his hood blowing the teenager's minds for the the third time that night.
Why?
Because Cyrus was a robot. He had short, metallic hair done in a crewcut. His eyes were light blue lights with slanted eye brows above them, and a strong nose between them. His face was expressionless and his stance rigid, but beyond that, he almost looked human. Almost.
"I. Demand. To Know Who. Made. You." Ren said slowly as he walked over to Cyrus and kneeled in front of him, inches from his face, "BECAUSE-THIS-WORKMANSHIP-IS-INCREDIBLE!!" Cyrus blinked.
"My apologies, I do not remember my creator," he said.
Ren ignored him as he got up, hauled Cyrus to his feet, and paced circles around him, poking and posing him while he muttering under his breath. Suddenly, he stopped pacing and thrust his index finger up in the air
"I've got it!" he said, "You're a nindroid! A ninja android!" Ren then sat back down looking very pleased with himself. The others stared at him.
"Crazy thing?" Khan said, "That's not the weirdest thing I've heard tonight." That earned him some laughs, and he felt the tension ease a bit.
"Now that you all know your heritage, and why I brought you here, it's time for you to make a choice. Will you watch history be made, or will you be the ones to make it?" Sensei Ju asked.
"Well, when you put it like that..." Khan said, rising to his feet along with the others, "Is it really a choice?"
Eleternia: The Ultimate Elemental
Chapter 2: The Start Of A Story
Shadow closed the door to the dorm silently. Swinging her satchel over her shoulder, she turned around to find Soran, with a backpack of his own, standing there. To the normal, oblivious passer by he would've looked impatient, bored, and slightly snooty, but Shadow saw the shifting weight, the glancing eyes, and the fingers fidgeting with his cape that betrayed his nervousness.
"Ready to go?" she whispered to him. He nodded, and followed her as they made their way out of the school.
Two days ago, they'd found the supposed treasure map under the school. Soran had bugged her about it until she'd agreed to go with him to the place marked on the map, yet she couldn't shake a sense of unease. He'd given her the map saying she'd be a better navigator than him as soon as she'd agreed to go, which was yesterday, and while she agreed she'd also spent most of the night studying as the map, and, more specifically, the symbol Shadow couldn't shake the one that the cobra coiled around a gemstone with an "E" on it looked familiar, but no matter how hard she'd tried, she couldn't place it. That was the problem with a photographic memory, it was hard to keep track of everything. Not to mention all the stuff she'd suppressed. she quickly ended that train of thought before she remembered anything she'd regret.
You put all that behind you. Forget it already
Shaking off her thoughts, Shadow pushed a side exit open, and walking out with Soran in tow. AVA was deep in the forest, but whoever built the school had either found a really big clearing or... chopped down quite a few trees. She was betting on the latter. The school itself was a rundown, two story building covered in various forms of vandalism. Not far away was a big, dilapidated barb they used for storage.
"It's locked," Soran whispered gesturing to the side door of the barn.
"Of course it's locked" Shadow muttered, shoving him out of the way and slipping a small throwing knife out of her belt. Carefully keeping the blade hidden from sight, she inserted it into the keyhole, and, after a few turns, was rewarded with a satisfying click. Putting the knife back in it's hiding place, she opened the door to reveal storage cabinets, assorted outdoors equipment, a work table. a tool chest, and, most importantly, an ATV. With all the trails and hills around AVA, it was pretty fun to drive.
"How'd you get the door open?" Soran asked.
Shadow opened the hood of the ATV and started hotwiring it.
"Same way I know how to do this," she answered as the engine roared to life. Thankfully, they were far enough away from the school for no one to notice it. Soran hopped on and drove in a circle.
"Open the door already!" he ordered her. Holding back a sharp remark, Shadow took down the bar holding the big door closed and shoved it open. Despite its considerable weight, she managed to get it open after a few tries.
"Took you long enough," Soran told her. He drove through the barn doors. Shadow didn't bother responding as she got on the ATV behind him. Arguing with him would be pointless. Anyway, regardless of what he said, she didn't care about him and therefore she didn't care what he said to her. That was why she chose to hang out with him actually, there was no chance she'd ever care about some blond wannabe villain who was terrible at being truly evil, but ordered around everyone, was convinced he had royal blood, and cared about nothing except himself, and that was exactly how she wanted it. She refused to care about anyone ever again, not even herself.
Late that night, Shadow sat shivering on the highest branch of a tree, gazing up at the starry sky, while Soran lie sleeping, using his cape for a blanket and bag for a pillow, in the clearing below. They'd been traveling all day, and were only a few miles from their destination but it had gotten too dark to tell where they were going so they ended up finding the clearing and setting up camp, which basically meant park the ATV, and try to sleep. They'd decided against building a fire to avoid any unwanted attention, and Shadow didn't own any other clothes beside a spare gi (ner black "pjs"), so the cold night air was biting into her, yet she didn't do anything to warm up.
"I kept everything inside, and even though I tried, it all fell apart," she sang softly, "what it meant to me would eventually be of a memory of a time I tried so a hard." Her voice was low and clear, each word carrying more emotion a then her face ever showed. There was a reason she only even sang when she was alone. After awhile, she climbed down, intending to explore the forest, but when she hit the ground, despite a light, silent landing, Soran woke up
"Shadow?" he asked, blinking sleepily, "why are you still awake?"
"Sleep isn't really my thing..." she replied wondering how in Eleternia he'd heard her. He rubbed his eyes, then studied her more intently.
"You're cold," he said, more of a statement than a question.
She blinked "Um... okay?" Soran didn't respond as he opened his backpack, and pulled out a bundle of black cloth.
"Here," he said, throwing it to her, "I made this for you so we could match, the evil mastermind and his loyal henchgirl." Despite the remark, his voice had none of its usual haughtiness. Shadow slowly unfolded the bundle feeling, slightly unnerved by the whole situation, but a sense of shock came over her when she saw what he'd made.
In her hands was a soft, black cloak, similar to Soran's, but with a little something extra. Going from the hood to the end of the cape was an embroidered, twisting dragon the same verdant hue of her eyes. Shadow knew how long embroidery took, and judging from the size of the design, and skill of the stitches, he'd spent days on it.
"I... um, thanks," she said awkwardly," You, uh, didn't have to, um, do this."
Soran smiled, "It was worth it, You look great," he yawned, "Now, if you don't mind, I'm going to sleep."
Then he rolled over and did just that, leaving poor Shadow completely at a loss for what to do. Something about how he'd acted reminded her of-
Don't think about them. They're gone. They left you and don't even try with Soran, she scolded herself, With love comes loss, remember? That's why you swore never to love again, especially not some stupid boy, not even if it's just as a friend...
"Are the we there yet?" Soran asked.
"For the twenty third time, no," Shadow said tiredly from behind the map. Yes, she was counting. Despite the rough terrain, and that she wasn't holding on, she somehow managed to stay on the ATV while Soran drove it through the forest undergrowth.
They'd started traveling shortly after sunrise, since Shadow hadn't bothered sleeping at all, and Soran hadn't been able to in the light. According to the map, they were almost there. Shadow pulled her new hood lower as she continued studying the old scroll. Neither of them mentioned what had happened last night. She would've thought it had been a dream if it wasn't for the cloak resting on her shoulders. Part of her wished it had been though. She'd been in a bit of a mood since then.
"Are we there now?" Soran said in a bored voice.
"For the last time, n- oh wait. "Shadow said, looking around, "This is it."
"Finally!" he said, hitting the brakes, and jumping off. She followed him, folding up the map and slipping it into her satchel despite the fact that by doing so, she was damaging it because it was a hundred plus years old scroll that wasn't meant to be folded. Interesting thing? She knew it.
They were now standing in the most densely wooded area they'd found yet. Not far away was a rushing river which was probably why there was so much vegetation here. There was a fog in the air and the earth covered in moss, making it slippery. Combined with the tangle of roots and vines, it made footing treacherous. There was a crashing sound coming from not far away.
"What's that noise?" Soran asked heading towards it.
"That would be the sound of water hurtling over a 1,500 foot cliff," Shadow said, fighting back a smirk when he froze.
"Um... maybe I should... uh, stay away from the edge, "he muttered, walking back to where the ATV was.
"You want the treasure or not?" she asked him, feeling a sudden surge of annoyance.
"Of course I do what kind of a question is that?"
"Then come on."
Shadow led him towards the crashing sound, which steadily got louder, as the fog got so thick, she couldn't see where she was stepping. Suddenly, she grabbed his arm, preventing him from taking another step
"Hey!" Soran said.
She released him, "Fine, walk off a cliff for all I care."
"Well-wait, what!?"
"The cliff edge is right there. Another step and you're going cliff diving."
"I knew that! I was just er, testing to see if you were paying attention."
"Sure, this way," she said shortly, wondering why she'd bothered to stop him from going over. Climbing rather stepping, she stayed parallel to the edge, while Soran stayed several feet to her right. It was difficult since the trees grew even here, some hanging half off the cliffs, and she couldn't see her hand in front of her face. Some part of her mind was was aware that wasn't possible for trees this big to grow in these conditions, not naturally, but she didn't stop to think about it. Nor did she listen to the sense of unease and strange familiarity of the symbol. She didn't feel like paying attention to her vague hunches. She just wanted to focus on the objective rather than having to deal with the turmoil in her mind.
"Here," she said. They'd stopped some way below the highest point of the diff where a ledge broke off, and led across the cliff wall to, presumably, behind the falls.
"You're kidding me, right?" Soran said.
"No, " Shadow replied as she readjusted her satchel and cape. At this point, she didn't care whether or not he came she just wanted to keep moving. Whatever that map was leading them to, she was going to find it. She'd figure out her next move from there, but she knew it wouldn't include Soran.
"My shadow's the only thing that walks beside me," she mouthed silently as she inched across the ledge, "My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating. Sometimes I wish someone out there would find me. Till then I walk alone..."
Gradually, the ledge continued to widen, and the noise grew louder. The sound of the rushing water pounded at her eardrums, drowning out everything except the drive to complete her goal. Maybe afterwards she could finally rest...
"Whoa..." Soran said, standing beside her behind the waterfall. She fought the urge flinch, having somewhat forgotten he was with her, even though the whole adventure was his idea in the first place. As for what he was looking at...
Before them was a huge, stone door carved into the cliff face. It was covered in twisting designs. After a second, Shadow, realized that the designs were snakes. Cobras, anacondras, vipers, you name it. Stepping closer to the door, she ran her fingers. across the carvings, but suddenly she froze as she recognized one of them.
Of course...
The symbol...
The trees...
It all makes sure now...
"I've got it!" Soran said, startling her. He stepped forward and, before she could stop him, pushed down on a carving. A deep grating sound started from inside the walls, causing the ledge to vibrate. Knowing full well she couldn't stop the doors from opening, and completely aware of the dangers that lurked inside, Shadow's hand went to the hilt of her tanto knife, which she'd hidden under her cape last night. She caught a flicker of movement in the shadows.
"Hello children," a low voice hissed "I thank you for releasing me, and the rest of my kind from our centuries of imprisonment, but must ask; what brings you all the way out here?"
A nearly silent scrape came from Shadow as she started to draw her blade.
"What's the matter?" the voice asked as it owner slithered out of the door way. His eyes glinted as he continued, "Cat got your tongue? Or should I say snake?"As soon as Soran saw the human sized, purple & white snake, he screamed and jumped backward, effectively ruining the tense moment. Shadow yelped as she saw him heading for the ledge, which was completely out of character for her, and she would forever deny doing, but she slid her tanto knife back into its sheath, and dove landing, right on top of him.
Their faces inches apart, Shadow said"I honestly don't know why I saved you."
Soran blinked
"Snakes? Why'd it have to be snakes?" he moaned.

"Sleep isn't really my thing..." she replied wondering how in Ninternia he'd heard her.
Eleternia 1: The Ultimate Elemental
Chapter 4: New Friends
"You're late Katara, " Ju said, sipping his tea as he watched her close the Temple gates.
"Sorry Sensei," she said, brushing a strand of her long, black hair back as she kneeled before her teacher, "I would've been here last night if my boots hadn't malfunctioned."
"Boots?"
"My latest invention, ice lightning boots. They let me fly. I figured I'd use the trip here as a trial run, and, well... They could use some more work."
"An admirable creation, but next time I ask you to come, perhaps you can take a more reliable form of travel?"
She rubbed her neck sheepishly, "Yes, Sensei..."
Katara tried to stay still as he studied her. In addition to her long hair, which was in a ponytail, she had tan skin, a light build, and angular face. Under her ached brows was a pair of slanted eyes, one silver, one blue. She wore cargo pants, a simple T-shirt, backpack full of equipment and a light grey handkerchief carefully positioned to hide her ears Why? Because her ears were pointed.
Yes, you read that right. Katara was a winter elf. Humans weren't aware that they existed, they thought elves were stuff of legend, and not exactly good ones. Hence why she hid her ears, even though Ju knew the truth. After all, he'd trained her ancestors.
Apparently satisfied with his inspection Ju set his teacup down, and said "Ah well, it's of no major consequence. You already know your heritage, and of my brother. The only thing I have yet to tell you of is a current mission. We'll be leaving on a journey to collect all the Blade pieces. When the sword is complete, it will reveal my father's heir, the Ultimate Elemental."
"Do you have any theories on who it is?"
"Not exactly, but I do hope its one of your teammates, or perhaps even you."
"There's no way I'd-wait, did you say teammates?"
He smiled as he stood up, "Khan, Clay, Jaya, Ren, Cyrus, please come out."
Katara stiffened as five teenagers of around her own age stepped out of the Temple's open doors. The first one had a confident smile, twinkling eyes, and way too much hair gel. He wore a bright red gi with a flame design, and a curved sword on his back.
"Hey," he said, with a wink, "I'm Khan, who might you be?"
"Ignore him. Your life will be much easier, trust me," a girl with similar facial features said. Despite her black hair, and sea-blue eyes, she looked a lot like Khan, Katara guessed they were brother and sister. Her gi was tight fitting, and grey and teal. She carried a trident.
"I'm Jaya," she added.
"Katara," the elf replied. She was about to ask the others names when one of them, a boy with wavy auburn hair, electric blue eyes, and a childish face, squatted next to her. He wore a blue gi, and had a kusarigama.
"What do the boots do?" he asked, "Oh, and I'm Ren by the way."
"They let me fly," Katara said shortly, wondering how he'd realized that they weren't normal boots. She'd disguised the tech pretty well.
"Cool! I like to tinker but I've never made anything that high-tech," Ren said, "Since I lived in a jun- I mean, a um, penthouse over in... er, Eleternia City, I didn't have the best parts." He gave an awkward chuckle and shot Jaya a sideways glance.
Katara raised a brow, questioning the credibility by of the last statement, but before she could ask, another of the boys stepped forward.
"My name's Clay. Nice to have you on the team, Katara," he said. With his warm brown skin, stone grey eyes, and friendly expression, he wasn't as obviously handsome as Khan, or flat-out adorable like Ren, but he wasn't bad looking either. Unlike the others outfits, his had metal plating for armor, which made it harder for him to move, but provided more protection. His chosen weapon was a scythe. He held a hand out to her.
Shaking it, she said, "Happy to help save the world."
He laughed, "I guess that is what we're trying to do."
"It is not a statistical probability that we'll succeed," someone behind Clay said in a strangely metallic sounding voice.
"Who cares about probability Cyrus?" Khan said throwing his arm around a six-feet tall android wearing a white and ice blue gi with a pair of hunting knives across his back, and a pouch full of shuriken around his waist.
"Whoa," Katara said, "where'd the robot come from? Did you make him Ren?"
"Ha! I wish," he responded, "Actually, we don't know who made him."
"Probably the last Ice Guardian," Jaya commented, only to receive some curious looks, "What? It'd make sense since they'd be the one to pass the power down."
"Not a bad theory, " Clay said thoughtfully.
So if Cyrus is the Guardian of Ice, I'm guessing Jaya is water, Clay is Earth, Ren is Lightning, and Khan is... Fire Katara thought.
"So..." Ren said, "Which Guardian are you?"
"My element is Protection," she said.
"Never heard of that one, and I know all sorts of old Guardian legends," Ren commented, but before Katara could come up with an explanation Khan started laughing for no apparent reason.
"What's so funny?" his sister asked.
"If her element is Protection, that means... Katara is the Guardian of Protection!" he gasped out as he cracked up all over again, and the others soon joined him.
"I don't understand. Humans have a strange sense of humor" Cyrus added. While Jaya explained the joke, Katara did a quick scan around the courtyard.
"Did anyone see where Master Ju went?" Clay asked, apparently noticing his absence right when she did.
"Yeah... About that," Ren said sheepishly, "I was supposed to tell everyone to join him after we were all introduced, but... I got distracted."
"Well, better late than never, " Khan said, as the teens started hiking down the mountain. Katara went last, watching her new teammates laugh, joke, and continue the banter, already acting like old friends. Only Cyrus hung back, looking uncertain. She chose to walk with him, neither sure whether or not they belonged.
I wonder how they'd react if they know I'm not human. I'm sure I'll have to tell them at some point...
They found Sensei Ju standing with two other people in the parking lot of the ranger station about halfway up the mountain. Everything above that point belonged to Ju and the Temple of Elements but anything below was open for people to hike, climb, and get their fill of mountain fun.
"Sensei Ju needs to install an elevator," Khan complained, stretching as they made their way into the parking lot.
"An elevator in a... mountain?" Jaya asked, raising a brow.
"What?" Khan said defensively, "It's a long hike."
"It's not that bad, "Clay commented, "Not after running up and down it at sunrise every day at least."
"Ugh, don't remind me about that," Khan groaned.
"What is this, amature hour?" Ren taunted, "That sounds like my warm up!"
"Impressive," Jaya said, "I always had trouble waking up on time."
"And that remains a problem," Master Ju said as they approached nim, "Did you take a nap before coming down here?"
"Our apologies Sensei," Cyrus said with a slight bow, "Ren did not inform us that we were supposed to follow you at first."
While they were talking, Katara took the time to inspect the two new people. The first was a woman, who looked to be in her late fifties. Her grey hair was in a neat french braid, with a few wisps of brown running through it. She had fair skin and dark blue eyes. With her buttoned up tan, long sleeve shirt, beige pants, and green hankercheif around her neck, Katara thought she looked like a kindergarden teacher on safari day.
The other was a guy in his late thirties. His brown hair had more gel than Khan's, and it was in a notably less stylish 'do. He wore khaki pants, cowboy boots, and an aivator jacket. One of his eyes was a warm chocolate, brown, but the other was covered in a eye patch decorated with a... churro? Basically, he looked like a theater enthusiest who'd snuck backstage, and fell into the costume bin.
"Well, lateness put aside," Ju was saying, "I'd like you all to meet a old aquaintence of mine, and her friend."
"My name's Atalie," the woman said, smiling, "I'm a historian, and I specailize in things concerning the First Elemental, and the Guardians."
"And I'm Churro Lopez! Explorer extrordiare!" the man said enthusiastially.
"Churro?" Cyrus asked, "That is a... highly unusual name."
"You mean weird," Khan whispered. Ren and Clay laughed, but Jaya shot her brother a glare.
"Well my name's actually Charlie, but back when I was in high school, I worked at place where I'd dress up as a churro, so all my friends started calling me that," he explained, "Ah, the good 'ol days. Too bad none of us kept in touch."
Katara got the distinct impression the none of his so called 'friends' knew his actual name. As Ju introduced them, she fought the urge to deny her place in the team. She'd been on her own for so long, it sounded strange to hear her name among others. The last time she worked with anyone, it had been her brother and she hadn't seen him for quite awhile.
"Let me get this straight," Ren said, "We're getting the pieces, Sensei Ju knows where they are, and Atalie knows about the Blade, Vaults, and our powers, right?"
"Correct," Ju confirmed.
"Okay, then why are you here?" Ren asked Churro.
"To provide transportation of course!" he said, "When Atalie told me that she we going on an expedition, and needed a way to get around, I knew I had just the thing for the job. Come on, I parked her down the road, so that you could all see her for the first time together!"
As they walked down the street, Katara hung back from the group again, but she somehow found Clay walking beside her. Neither of then said a word, and she was thankful for the silence. Studying him out of the corner of her eye, she noted his alert, tense posture, and the way he kept a careful watch on the others. He was obviously a dedicated ninja, and seemed to be the leader of the group whether by unspoken consent or Sensei Ju's choosing, she wasn't sure. She was wondering if she should say something when they turned a corner, and saw something that stopped everyone in their tracks.
"Frostbite," Katara muttered.
"I hate to ask, but... what. is. that." Clay asked.
"I think... It's a bus," Jaya said, "or at least the remains of one."
She was right, possibly on both statements. Before them stood a huge, double-decker tour bus. Stepping closer, Katara realized what she'd though was grey paint was actually brown covered in countless layers of grime. There was so much stuff strapped to the top it was a wonder that it was able to move.
"Um... guys?" Khan said from the rear end of the bus. There was a strange expression of horror on his face. Exchanging weary looks with each other the four teens and nindroid walked cautiously to their teammates location.
"My processers are unable to process what my optical sensors are sensing," Cyrus said.
Ren clapped a hand on his shoulder, "You said it buddy."
Apparently, someone had thought it would be a good idea to hook up a a small platform to the back of the bus and strap a porta-potti to it. Walking around it, Katara didn't see a door, so she supposed that it was on the side facing the bus.
"Is that... legal?"Jaya asked.
"Of course it is!" Churro said, coming around to join them, "Come on and see the inside!"
"That's the last thing I want to do," Clay whispered to them.
The interior of the bus wasn't much better than its exterior. It was pretty dim because of the dirty windows and the supposedly broken lights. There was various stains and spills, on the seats. Old wrappers and fast food containers littered the floor. The only cool thing was a TV and old school gaming console set up in the back. The boys instantly lost all their disgust and fired it up. Katara rolled her eyes as they started arguing over who got the first game. Noticing the tightly wound staircase next to the door, she decided to check out the second level.
It was somewhat cleaner than first though there was still some dirt laundry lying around. All the seats had been taken out, replaced by bunk beds and tables. Walking over to an empty table Katara set her backpack on it, hearing several things jostle around as she did.
"Hello?" a strange female voice said, "who's there?"
Katara spun around to find an old female android. Her silver hair was in a neat bun, and her skin was white with several purple power lines visible under it. Her eyes were bright green lights. She wore white leggings, a blouse, and a bright purple sash. She reminded Katara of Cyrus, if not as well made.
"My name is Rali, which stands for Robotic Assistant Lifeform, Intelligent," she said, "who are you?"
Thinking of how many introductions she'd been through today, how many more she'd go through before their journey was over, and wondering how many would turn out to be new friends, or new enemies, she said, "My name is... Katara"
Soran: Uh... Shadow?
Shadow: Are you dying or about to die?
Soran: No?
Shadow: Then why are you bothering me!?!

Katara"
Ninternia: The Ultimate Elemental
Chapter 5: True Friendship
Soran woke up in the moss-covered stone nest the siltharaa had given him, and rubbed his eyes, yawning. It had been a long night. After they'd met Pythius at the doors under the falls, he'd welcomed them into his home: the subterranean world called Erdan. Apparently, humans had imprisoned him, and the rest of his snake like kind called siltharaa deep underground centuries ago. Soran hadn't even thought to ask why they were locked up. I mean, it was a bunch of snake people who he'd set free, and were probably grateful to him, what could go wrong? If they gave him a bunch of scaly servants, or took over the world with him on their side, who was he to complain? They'd be doing his job for him.
Crawling out his nest-bed-thing, Soran took a look around the room. They were deep below the surface, so the whole space was carved out of smooth, grey stone. Light came from some brightly glowing, swirly stuff on the walls and ceiling. Various mossy blankets, pillows, and carpets were around the room, lying inside bowl-shaped chairs made of a surprisingly tough, spongish material. The door was made of the same spongy stuff, with a metal handle, and crystal window allowing you to see into the hall without letting anyone see in. Shadow was leaning against the wall next to it. She hadn't noticed that he'd woken up yet. She was staring at a small knife she was holding with a strange, captivated expression on her face.
"Where'd the knife come from?" Soran said, not bothering to ask if she was okay or even say a simple 'good morning'.
"What knife?" Shadow asked, pushing off the wall and straightening her cape.
"The one you're- well, were holding," he said, confused as she held out her empty hands.
"Not sure what you're talking about, but we should get out of here. We don't want to overstay our welcome."
"But we just got here!"
"So? I don't trust these guys."
"You don't trust anyone."
To his surprise, a strange look passed over her face, and then she went rigid.
"Fine," she said coldly, "Stay with your new friends. I'm out of here"
She turned and stormed away, slamming the door behind her
"Shadow, wait! Where are you... going," Soran finished in annoyance because by the time he'd reached the hall, she was gone. Sighing, he set off down the corridor he thought led to the surface, hoping to cut her off before she got there Then again, it had been late, he'd been tired, and it had been a really long hike.
Wait.. Why am I doing this?
Coming to a stop, he frowned. He was a villain, why was he chasing after disobedient henchman? To see if she was okay? To say sorry? What for? No evil mastermind would ever apologize, not to mention, he hadn't done anything wrong, had he? If she was upset then that was her problem. It had nothing to do with him. There was no reason to check up on her... Right?
This was what Soran had told himself his whole life, and he'd never doubted before. It was he the AVA way, the only way he knew. If it wasn't your problem, there wasn't any reason to care about it. It made sense.
Yet.... As he turned to walk back their, no his room, Soran couldn't shake the sense that he was doing the wrong thing, no matter how hard he tried.
A sharp knock on the door started Soran out of his brooding He wasn't sure how long it'd been since Shadow'd left, it was hard to keep track of time down there, but it felt like it'd just happened, yet way too much time had passed all at once. Since returning to the room, all he'd done was pace and think.
"Come in!" he said, coming to a halt and trying to look imposing, but he couldn't stop fidgeting. As usual.
At his invitation, Pythius opened the door and slithered in, masking all contempt for the little boy looking at him so imperiously. Soran, in contrast, didn't even try to hide his disgust when he set his eyes on the purple and white scaled siltharaa. He hadn't been a fan of snakes ever since some of his classmates had hidden one in his bed.
"Why are you here?" he asked.
"I sssimply wanted to see how you and your friend are doing." Pythius hissed smoothly.
"I... we're not friends," Soran muttered, ducking his head slightly, "and anyways, she left."
"Did ssshe now?"
"Yeah... we sort of fought a little.... I, um, told her she, uh, wasn't any good to me if she didn't follow orders."
"Well done. You'll make a wonderful villain sssomeday"
"Of course I will! I found this place after all."
"Ah yesss, but, if you don't mind me asssking, how did you find usss?"
Before Soran could answer someone stormed into the room and grabbed Pythius's neck, pinning him against the wall. It was a man, one of the tallest and most intimidating Soran had ever seen. He was dressed in flowing black robes, complete with a hood, heavy boots, and a strange mask that covered the top half of his face, then slanted down either side of his nose. How he saw through it, Soran didn't know, but if its only purpose was to unnerve, it accomplished it well. The part of his face that was visible, the only skin showing, was paler than Shadow's, almost colorless. And if all that didn't scare you, the two long, curved, swords on his back certainly would.
"I told you to leave him out of this," he said coldly. His voice wasn't overly deep, but it seemed to hold the weight of centuries. It sent shivers down Soran spine but... it also sounded strangely familiar.
"He hasss the map," Pythius gasped.
"Then get it then release him. He has no part in this."
Letting go of the shake, he began walking out the door, but not before turning toward Soriano for a second.
"You should've never come here," he said, and, with that, the man left, leaving both the boy and the snake staring after him.
"LET GO OF ME!!" someone shouted, snapping them out of their trance. Straightening his cape, Soran glanced curiously at the door. He knew that voice...
And he was proven right a few seconds later when five ragged siltharaa draged an angry Shadow into the room. The snakes shoved her in his direction, then quickly put as much space between her and them as they could without leaving the room.
Switching her focus to him, she said, "Did you send them after me?"
"I-"
"You can't order me around like a servant. I've put up with it so far, don't ask me why, but I'm done now, okay?"
"Sheesh, calm down. I didn't send them. You wanted to leave, why would I waste my precious time on stopping you?"
She didn't seem to know what to say to that.
"If I may," Pythius interrupted looking amused by their interaction, "I sent the guards to get you. When heard you were wandering around the tunnels, I had make sure you didn't get lost."
Soran watched as Shadow gave Pythius a skeptical look "So five of them to drag me, a ten-year-old girl, here."
"Yess well, I asked them to guide, not drag. I assure you, I will talk to them about how they treated you, though I sssusspect they did sso with reasson," he said, returning her gaze.
"Do I look like I could remotely hurt them?"
"No..."
"Glad we agree on something. Now, what do you want?"
"Nothing more than to reunite you with-"
"Yeah, yeah, cut the fancy talk will you?" Shadow said tiredly, "I saw your partner leaving. He didn't seem all that happy, but he did look human. I happen to recall you telling us that we were the first people to set foot here in centuries. Not sure what you're up to, and frankly, I don't really care either. I don't speak for Blondie, but I don't trust you. Deal with it."
Soran stared at her, shocked. He hadn't thought about that, yet she made a good point, but... Pythius was a cool guy. He saw potential in Soran, something no one else did. He looked to the snake, hoping for an explanation.
He was disappointed.
"Well played Ssshadow. Sssoran would do well to listen to you," he hissed, "but as it.... ssieze them!"
Soran backed up as three of the guards approached him, but before long, he had his back against the wall. A rush of fear hit him as he looked at them with wide eyes, but he also felt betrayed, and... a little guilty. He was the one who'd thought Pythius was a good guy. He was the one who'd insisted on going on this crazy adventure. It was just that... he'd thought the snake had actually believed in him, something no one ever had done before.
Suddenly, one of the guards stopped advancing. A Somewhat surprised look flitted across his face. Then he crashed to the floor, a knife buried deep in his back, blood dripping from the wound. Soran, stunned, snapped his head up to see Shadow, two guards on the floor behind her, hand extended in front of her as if she'd just thrown something. His eyes flicked to the knife and back to her hand.
"Just so you know, I was going easy on you earlier," she said, a smirk dancing over her lips as the two remaining guards charged her. Soran took one look at the blood pooling at his feet, and threw up. Turning away from the fight, he crouched behind of the bowl-chair-things and pulled his cloak around himself, trying to calm down, but there was too much adrenaline running through his veins.
When the shouts died down, Soran peeked around the chair, curiosity overpowering horror, and saw five shakes lying still and a ragged, bloody, and panting Shadow holding a mid length blade against Pythius's neck.
"I underessstimated you," the siltharaa said, appearing strangely relaxed.
"Common mistake," Shadow replied, equally calm. Before they could say anymore, the door slammed open yet again. Soran jumped at the sudden intrusion, but neither the snake or girl appeared surprised as another six siltharaa entered now trashed room.
"Nice of you to join us," Shadow said, not moving, "I'd give you the same welcome I gave your friends, but I'm a little tied up right now. No hard feelings?"
One of them grabbed Soran roughly, despite his attempt to dodge him, "Release Pythius or your friend gets it."
"Who said he was my friend?" she asked, adding pressure to the knife. A crimson drop made its way down Pythius's neck Soran fought the urge to vomit again. To his surprise, he also felt sharp stab of guilt, but the more he thought about it, the less startling it became. He didn't feel betrayed by her like he had with Pythius because.... he didn't deserve her.
As one of the siltharaa raised a heavy sword above his head, preparing to strike a final blow, Soran met a pair of evergreen eyes with his own inky black ones.
"I'm sorry," he whispered, wishing that he could somehow convey exactly how much he regretted what he'd done with those two, small, simple words, but he had to apologize, even if it was the last thing he ever did because... even after how he'd treated her; ordering her around with no regard for how she felt, she'd stayed right by his side, something not even his parents had done. He closed his eyes, waiting for the cold kiss of the blade, feeling the turmoil of his emotions as if it was burning him from within, and the sensation was intensifying.
"WAIT!!" Pythius screamed, causing the siltharaa to fumble with his sword a second before it came down. In that second, a shockwave of brilliant energy emmitted from Soran, throwing everyone but him and Shadow against the wall.
He stood there, feeling the usual energy that raced through his veins, never letting him sit still, increase tenfold. Then, without warning, the charge left his body, leaving him feeling more drained then he ever had in his life. Collapsing to his knees, he met Shadow's eyes one final time.
"Go," he whispered to her, hoping she knew what he meant and why. A wordless communication passed the between them, a sense of understanding unparalleled by anything he'd felt before, almost like they could read each others thoughts. Then the moment slipped away and he fell, his head crashing into the stone. The last thing Soran saw was Shadow turning and running, never looking back. As darkness overcame his vision he heard her nearly silent foot falls fading, whether from her getting further and further away, or from him slipping farther and farther from consciousness, he didn't know.
