João Batista da Costa (1865-1926) Brazilian draughtsman and teacher.
Nu masculino de costas ,1889.
João Batista da Costa’s Male Nude Seen from the Back (1889) reflects the academic tradition of the 19th century, when studying the male nude was considered essential to an artist’s training. The painting demonstrates a meticulous understanding of anatomy, with careful attention to light, musculature, and posture—hallmarks of academic realism. The studio setting, complete with drapery and posing blocks, underscores that this is not a narrative scene but a focused study of the human body. In doing so, Costa aligns himself with European academic conventions of his time while revealing a refined sensitivity to natural stance and tonal subtlety.
