Anyone else with a (comparably) difficult native language, who is just happy that you've learned this language as a child and don't have to learn it now? And whenever someone comes and tells you, that they want to learn your mothertongue, you just think "Ambitious, enviable. Couldn't be me though."

I wonder how much my students version of La Conscienza di Zeno differs from the original. Because in my version Zeno flees the clinic because he thinks his wife is sleeping with his doctor. So he goes home, hears her laughing from downstairs and thinks "So all is well" and falls asleep on a couch. All in the span of a few pages. Maybe your wife is laughing because the doc is shagging her good right now Zeno?! Ever thought about that?

What a week… On Tuesday, the old laptop I use for studying gave up on me (and I still haven’t managed to fix it). Then on Friday, my internet decided to disappear in the middle of a study session and stayed down all afternoon, for absolutely no reason.

I wonder if the universe wants to tell me something...

I haven't studied any Swedish in over a week, I just opened my Anki and omg, how does this language sound so wonderful right now?

One thing that astounds me is how we misunderstand the language-level scale so much. I always thought A2 was merely babbling about your day and hobbies but when I reached A2 in Italian I was able to listen to (slowly spoken) videos about all kinds of topics and started reading a novel. And that's expected! At A2 a language can already become a part of your life, not just textbooks and flashcards!

Tuesday: Therapy day but did 40min of flashcards and vocab during commute

Wednesday: Post-Therapy burnout, 50min Study

Thursday: 1h 25 Study, 1h Italian

Friday: 1h 50 Academic English, 20 min Italian

Total: 9 hours

Next week I should get the Swedish textbook that I reserved at the library, and then I'll go back into learning more Swedish!

Learning new languages made my appreciate my mothertongue so much more!

I deliberately chose languages that have easier grammar than German, because I suck at learning grammar. But I also find German grammar charming, compared to for example Swedish, which doesn't have as much grammatical rules and exceptions.

I wouldn't want to learn another grammar-rich language but I'm happy that I have one as my mothertongue!

One difference I see between my A0 Swedish and my B1 Italian studies is, that I need a lot more break when learning Swedish. I didn't really expect that because the material I work with is soo much easier. But after 40 minutes my brain just stops working and I stare at those words like I'm illiterate.

The bitter truth is, adding the vocabs by hand into your Anki does help remembering them.

It's so tricky changing your ressources after you already know a bit of a language. The placement tests some apps offer are oftentimes worthless because they have different idea of what are "basic vocabs".

I recently failed an placement test in Italian because it was about a recipe, and I just didn't know any of the words required, except farina.

Why do you think any A1 student would know "in bagnomaria"?? 😭
