Antoni was intrigued by her response and felt a bit of regret that heâd maybe pushed a little too much. âGardening,â he repeated after her thoughtfully, thinking on the gardeners theyâd had during his childhood. He had been fond of them and the way theyâd cultivated the expansive green space of the family estate. âThat is admirable,â Ant was genuine. âIs it fulfilling work?â
He watched the sunlight hit the side of her face as they stood, admiring the human profile. Heâd always loved silhouettes. The curve of her jaw reminded him of Ana, but he pushed the thought aside, blinking and looking at her instead of the mirage that appeared in his mindâs eye.
âHm,â he nodded. âI understand.â Ant knew she wasnât saying everything, but couldnât blame her. He should be protecting himself more anyways. Cocking his head to the side, his expression was one of confusion. âNo, I⊠Italy,â a finger gestured to himself, and then his hand swept a gesture towards Lina, implying his original intent. âI donât think I know who you are speaking of. Who is that?â In truth, heâd picked a city on a map and just drove.Â
Lina nipped at the inside of her cheek, holding back the confession that she hadnât actually been too fond of her job at the shop. Sure, she reveled in hard work gone well and took delight in the expressions of customers blown away by such effortsâ neither changed much about her battles with mild allergies.Â
âItâs gotta be, right? Canât waste time on what isnât worth it,â she answered simply, shrugging off all other thoughts. âSoâ hey, if you ever need some top-quality pickings? Iâm your gal.â
The sincere smile on her lips was unwavering as he explained his previous question. It only grew, the more he spoke. There was something in the manner of speech that was all too endearing. As soon as he fell quiet, she mirrored his first move and pointed to herself.
âAmerica. But Iâve only been in town a few months. Not too long, but long enough to know some of the best spots around. You wanna come with me to check one out? I can give you a little run-down of Treeville while weâre at it.â
