I cannot stress enough just how important it is that we fight back against this ridiculous law. fun story my brother (26 yo) and I (21yo) are biracial Chinese-Americans and we went to go see Incredibles 2 together. By the end of the short both of us were in tears, and while its easy to make me cry in a theater, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him get emotional. 

We both had kind of a strained relationship with our mom until around mid/post-college, and he’s going to be moving out to start med school in the fall. Seeing this short hit home so well and a lot of people are arguing that it’s not just for Chinese people.

I love that all types of people can see what this short means to mothers and kids with similar relationships, and that the experience wasn’t only for Chinese people. I get it, I really do. 

But there were scenes and parts included in this short that are. My Lao Lao (grandmother) lives across the country and speaks english but there’s still a bit of a barrier. Some of the memories i treasure most are her teaching me how to make dumplings, because she was teaching me about my culture without needing words. There are a ton of other subtle things that are very specific and shared experiences for lots of asian and asian american people. And a lot of them are unnoticed by the people who don’t know a lot about that culture. 

So the overall story was so sweet and definitely something non asian people can understand and empathize with, but they made sure to include things for Chinese people that makes it a very specific experience for us.

The phone number for his best friend

Then he had a heart attack (mild) and none of his family or friends were around to take him to the hospital. But instead of calling 911, he called me, who by then lived 45 minutes away. He lived 5 minutes from an EMS dispatch location. He called me, despite the fact that he didn’t believe me 8 months prior when I was feeling suicidal and I had to call a cab to go alone to check myself into the hospital for a 72-hour hold. I told him to call 911, hung up on him when he whined about “making a fuss”, called 911, called his siblings and then texted them “your brother is having a heart attack, I called 911 for him, come home,” and washed my hands of it.

Emotionally vacant men who won’t do household labor or emotional labor are not Nazis, but they aren’t good people, either, and you don’t have to put up with their shit.
