So You Want to Make a Fiction Podcast?

So this article is by the creator of an audio drama called Lost Terminal. As always, I encourage you to read the article in full!

The article starts by extolling the many virtues of podcasting that I hold dear myself- namely that they’re personal, there are no gatekeepers, no monopolizing companies, and no algorithms shoving stuff down your throat.

Once the idea of a computer that communicates through a text terminal came to the creator’s mind, they sat and thought of what they personally could do to bring that idea to life. And, apologies if the creator does not use they/them pronouns, I couldn’t find their real name or any preferred pronouns written.

The next point the creator brings up is to write stories that you want to hear. Basically, be as self indulgent as you want. When choosing a genre and setting, know that these should complement your likes and fit the story you’re telling.

As you’re having fun writing, the creator advises that you should pay attention to what themes keep resurfacing. Once you see them, lean into them. They’re what really make you write, and if you can tap into them, it makes your story far more cohesive and yourself far more interested in continuing.

We're so close to making more vampires!

Thanks to all the folks who've already supported vampire rights and/or wrongs on the Snow Blood crowdfunder, we're now just 3% away from hitting our next milestone of 80% funded, which is when I'll be revealing our next Mystery Guest Voice Actor! 

If you didn't know, Snow Blood is a sequel spin-off to Not Quite Dead, a gory horror romance audio drama about vampires. Alfie and Neige are both vampires, and they're a bit of an odd couple. Neige is here for a long time AND a good time, where Alfie is preoccupied with making vampire rights happen.

They've been living in Buenos Aires for a while at the start of the show and Alfie's been doing some experiments to figure out how vampire blood might be used to help humans. But he's also been trying to get other vampires to share their stories with the world.

It has not been going well. He has so far got zero (0) vampire stories and one (1) stalker who keeps inviting him to meet up on the other side of the world. Which would be a terrible idea. Right?

There's a pilot you can listen to here or find it by searching Not Quite Dead wherever you listen to podcasts. Snow Blood will expand on the OGs show's ideas, but as well as having loads for existing fans, it will also be a GREAT first bite of the these character for newcomers!

We have less than a quarter of our funds left to raise, which is very exciting indeed! Beyond the main funding goal, the first Stretch Goal is £3,666, and will see the episode run for Snow Blood increase from 8 episodes up to 10. 

It's really exciting to be so close to seeing more vampires in the world! Thank you so much to those of you who've been a part of this campaign so far, it really does mean the world.

I'm crowdfunding for Snow Blood: A Not Quite Dead Story!

We're VERY close to hitting our goal now, and there's a ton of rewards including stickers, a mini ttrpg zine, and naming a vampire in the show.

Snow Blood is a gory horror romance about vampires trying to change the world by learning about how they work and recording as-yet unrecorded histories. Alfie was an A&E nurse and is now obsessed with finding a way for humans and vampires to live side-by-side, but it's not going very well.

After years of living on the fringes of society, it's hard to convince other vampires this plan could work. And it's all made more difficult by the fact this random human keeps calling him, over and over, and he does NOT know why.

Snow Blood is a sequel spin off to Not Quite Dead, which finished last year. You can listen to 55 episodes wherever you find your podcasts. BUT you don't need to have listened to NQD to enjoy Snow Blood; whilst it builds on NQD's ideas, it's a new story that will stand up on its own!

Not Quite Dead and Snow Blood: An Introduction for the As-Yet-Unbitten.

Not Quite Dead S1: What if Bella Swan was a gay nurse in his 30s from England and Edward Cullen was a Czech Catholic from the 19th century and neither of them were hung up about sex but they WERE hung up about literally everything else about the whole situation?

Not Quite Dead S2: What if Lestat was a decent person and also was older than agriculture, and France, but was somehow still French and kind of a dick about it? But also very sexy and somehow extremely kind, and he stuck around even when you were a prick about the whole 'becoming a vampire' thing? (he also won't shut up about Madonna)

Not Quite Dead S3: What if Frankenstein's monster never woke up and was also Victor's boyfriend (and they were both gay vampires)? And Victor wants to understand how his own vampire body works so he keeps doing wild shit like pulling out his teeth. And hot ancient nice Lestat was there and real cut up about it. (metaphorically. most of the time.)

Not Quite Dead S4: What if you were the chosen one of a secret vampire cult and your boyfriend was its disgraced god and neither of you were into that but you were extremely into each other? (and you were gay vampires. and all that science shit you did in S3 was the only thing you had to go on for how to fix the cult thing. and you bit each other a lot. like, a lot a lot.)

Snow Blood: A Not Quite Dead Story: What if you wanted vampires to come out of the coffin True Blood style but none of the other vampires were on board and your boyfriend thought you were working too hard and you were also being stalked by an extremely sus human? (and you were a gay vampire and secretly also an end-of-life nurse but you were being REALLY weird about it)

Alfie has been keeping himself busy, too. Trying to kickstart his vampire revolution, yes, but also some. Ah. Other things. You'll see.

This guy keeps calling them. Things do NOT sound good for him, whoever he is, but they're pretty sure he's not a vampire, and they're not really clear on how he got the number. Which does kind of highlight some problems with how Alfie has been going about things...

I like it plenty, but it's so american that if I (american living americanly in america) haven't listened to it in a while and turn on an episode I have to take a minute to pause and say "god this is american." the complete disengagement with the fact that all our leads are involved in the military. all the red scare "evil russian" stuff with hilbert that somehow doesn't come up when minkowski confronts eiffel about his xenophobia. the particular vintage sitcom way minkowski and hera argue with each other as Two Strong Women in the first season. they legit torture hilbert with starvation for a while and no one acknowledges that this is maybe already them losing the moral high ground before anyone even suggests killing him. really good show, but hey does anyone remember the geneva convention.

the impressive thing about this is that I believe gabriel urbina isn't even usamerican by birth, which only kinda bleeds through into the writing very occasionally (ex. eiffel saying "cv" instead of "résumé"), otherwise this is very well studied and finely reproduced americanity.
