My job had a training on AI and I was surprised how honest it was about AI’s limitations and problems, and we spent our activity time finding errors and issues with responses made by AI. But it did beg the question, why would I use this
my petty gripe about anachronism in historical/fantasy/spec-fic worlds is attraction language.
We’ve all heard the “should you use modern queer labels or not” argument but honestly even when people go “true, they wouldn’t use the labels ‘aromantic’ or ‘asexual,’” so often the characters describe their experiences as “I never felt romantic attraction” or “I don’t feel attracted to anyone” in ways that makes me go. You are stilllllll thinking about this in an extraordinarily modern online way. That 19th century steampunk detective man will NOT be angsting about having never felt romantic attraction, he would be angsting about being unable to feel moved by the beauty or charm of a woman, or something. And I do think that “attractiveness” language is different from the identity-level idea of experiencing attraction—Sherlock Holmes does not talk about not experiencing attraction, but when Watson says “What a very attractive woman!” Holmes responds “Is she? I did not observe.” (And then Watson calls him an inhuman automaton and calculating-machine and Holmes calls Watson’s judgement biased). Never swayed by the attractiveness of a man or woman, never desirous of marriage, never charmed by the delights of love, all of these feel like some of the variety of ways that someone in this milieu might describe an ace- or aro-spectrum identity more than “never felt attraction” does. Mostly because, like the terms for aromantic and asexual themselves, nailing down an exclusively attraction-based definition of a-spec identities is a relatively new and extremely post-AVEN thing. And yet in fiction everybody knows to articulate their experience as feeling sexual/romantic attraction. And I always want to go nooo how would THIS character think about it?? Not how you think this character SHOULD think about it, how would THIS person in THIS context articulate their feelings?

okay I’m reeling because the other night I was going on about Celessa? The girl who wants to retrace Zelda’s footsteps? Bae?
So I was just wandering merrily along and decided to pick a fight with a Yiga chick and I NOTICED
that the Yiga aren’t just picking random disguises. They’re impersonating actual travelers that Link might have come across and befriended. Because honestly? My Link followed Celessa around for over a day and saved her from monsters like four times (I was trying to get her to repeat text, okay, just… don’t worry about it). So coming up on Celessa crying and trying to comfort her and then she just straight up attacks you? ICE COLD.
Back when I made my Yiga OC poll @notaflyeater expressed interest about my Master Kohga's long lost loves, so since it's Pride Month and we stan a bi king Master, here they are! Iiiiit's...
Noor and Daqo! (Art by my wife Bast @purpledemonart, posted here with her permission and in fact at her urging. <3 Please check her out and give her art some love.)
Under the cut are some Facts about these two and their relationships with our best guy Kohga!
Daqo--
Pronounced Da-KO. 'Da' with the a like in 'father.' It's an ancient Sheikah name that started out as a family name but started gaining use by the Yiga as a given name in more recent centuries. (Note: The monk whose shrine is by Gerudo Town is named Daqo Chisay.)
Daqo was 7' tall. He shot up pretty early and was easily the tallest kid in Kohga's friendgroup until a couple of the other boys almost caught up. He had that lanky muscled build as a teenager and in his earliest 20s, but then bulked the fuck up to get the Blademaster Physique when he started training for that position starting around age 23.
The hairstyle Bast drew was his usual one but he'd let the top grow out and it'd get so fluffy. That was his real hair, too, no disguise. The Friendgroup had a tradition of floofing Daqo's mop before undertaking challenges or tasks, for luck. As in, playing a game or play-fighting, they'd ruffle him up. Whenever his mom finally made him get a haircut, it was cause for much faux alarm. XD
Definitely had high charisma stats and rakish charm. This boy could talk himself out of almost any trouble and learned that very early in life. His parents believed he could do no wrong and his mischief was definitely met with a lot of "oh, he's just being a kid" and "that's Daqo for you!" He never tried to throw anyone else under the cart for shenanigans though, importantly. It was always more like, well sure he did that, but was it really such a big deal? Or yeah, the gang took some stuff, but they were gonna put it all back... That kind of explanation/excuses.
A favorite activity through pretty much his whole life was swiping extra Satori apples from the kitchens, for himself and friends. This guy had an insatiable love for those things. And was often seen tossing one around or just pulling one seemingly from nowhere to take a big bite to punctuate some joke or idea he'd just laid out.
Daqo had a nonchalant attitude toward life and was just like. The coolest person you could meet, in the truest sense of the word. Very much the ringleader of the gang, the one suggesting the antics but then leaning back to watch any chaos unfold. You can easily picture him with his hands laced behind his head, stretched out against a wall while all the other kids did silly stunts or laid back against a rock while the other young adults got too tipsy and sang around the campfire. He himself rarely got too intoxicated, and preferred smoking a little safflina to chill out, to drinking alcohol.
He was also observant as hell. Behind that demons-may-care, seemingly unaffected façade, Daqo was always paying attention to what others were saying and doing, taking mental notes. When they were alone, Kohga would often marvel at how Daqo would have such insightful commentary on their friends' actions and things going on with them, and how he'd remember details or notice the tiniest little tells like head tilts and tones of voice, etc.
He WAS also good with a sword. He had to be, to pass Blademaster training with Lord Chisao, Kohga Sr.'s Right Hand. In fact he'd often be pissing Chisao off by being so effortlessly talented and then doing the bare minimum of practice. But nevertheless his skill was undeniable. His father was (is, still) a Blademaster too and figured if he was meeting his benchmarks he could eventually pass the tests and earn the Blademaster rank, so it was okay for him to have fun in life too. Kohga Sr. agreed, tbh, and also kinda took that kind of attitude toward his son.
Yeah...Daqo was, as a child and teenager, often the one also encouraging Little Kohga (who was three years younger) to skive off and chill with him or hang out with their friends instead of practicing his arcane techniques or doing extra Footsoldier training. He was also the one who told Kohga he simply didn't have to be a Blademaster like his dad wanted.
Daqo preferred the lighter and honestly showier Windcleaver to the heavier Eightfold Longblade, but could use both. He really liked using the 'cleaver's breezy knockback techniques to put opponents off their footing and then pressing them into falling over. In sporting/training matches, that was his favorite way to finish things quickly.
Kohga and Daqo became Best Friends shortly after Koh got his mask the year he'd turn 11 and the two got assigned some chore details together. Prior to that, while Koh was littler, Daqo readily accepted the young Heir into the playgroup and would hype him up in his casual way. Little Kohga really looked up to Daqo. But when they had shared responsibilities, they just started talking more like equals and were eventually Thick as Thieves Teenagers Doing Shenanigans both alone and with their group. And Kohga stiilll looked up to Daqo.
Daqo named Kohga's "Big Glowy Blast!" As he was the only other person present when Kohga did it for the first time, quite accidentally. But that's a story for another time. :D
One day, fifteen-year-old Kohga experienced a rude awakening when he learned the girl he'd been crushing on had a boyfriend (I wanna tell that silly story in a separate post lol). During his daily Go Up On the Cliffs and Mooch Around session with Daqo later, Koh was pouty and lamenting that he really liked that girl and wanted to kiss her, but how dumb that was because why would she ever kiss him, ugh, at this rate he'd never get to kiss anybody--you know, dramatic heartbroken teen angst stuff. And. Daqo just suddenly said, easy as you please, "I'll kiss you, [special nickname only Daqo used redacted]. If you wanna kiss somebody." And Kohga was taken aback by this and suddenly realized. ...oh. That would be something. Something he would like. On impulse, not giving himself time to laugh it off and back out of it, he turned to Daqo sitting next to him on the cliff ledge and said, "Okay, lay it on me then."
And that was the day Kohga fell in love with Daqo. Who was apparently a good kisser.
And only got better with time.
And a couple years later, was a fun lover, too. In fact, Kohga's first.
But the thing is...
Kohga and Daqo were never "OFFICIALLY" together romantically. As in, neither ever asked the other for a partnership, and they never said they loved each other Like That in words. In fact, Daqo broke Kohga's heart more than once by getting other partners (including shortly after that first kiss, when Kohga sort of assumed "we kissed we're dating now right" and...no Daqo showed up to the next campfire hangout with a girl on his arm). Which would also lead Kohga to start up short-lived flings with others. But the thing also is, they'd always end up breaking up with whoever their other partners were fairly quickly, like after only a couple months at most, and would end up back in each other's arms. BFFs outwardly to most everyone else, stealing kisses and interludes alone, sometimes getting caught but always playing it off as fooling around, no big deal. Best Friends with Benefits, that was them, if they'd had such words to call it.
To this day, Kohga isn't sure what Daqo's hangup was, about ever making them Official. But then again, he admits, he never brought up the topic either. He just always took Daqo back, starry-eyed and desperately in love while acting like sure, things could stay the way they were, casual, fun, friendly, nothing serious.
He was going to ask, though. Daqo became a full Blademaster at 27, and shortly after, Kohga got promoted by his dad to Right Hand at the very young for it age of 25. Kohga had built up this image in his head, of eventually, many years later of course, becoming Master and having Daqo as his Right Hand and...oh the dragonflies in his belly whenever he thought of this part...partner too. Maybe...
But when he finally got up the nerve to ask for that partnership...several months later... He told himself, he'd do it after Daqo got back from his first truly important Blademaster mission, alongside Kohga Sr., once Daqo had truly proven himself in the position. As a celebration. Maybe Daqo would even see it as a reward! Oh, Kohga would finally ask for and have what he wanted. His amazing Daqo, his best friend and lover...officially, romantically His.
But Daqo never came home, and neither did Kohga's father.
And Kohga never found out, if his dream could've become reality.
He misses Daqo so damn much. And never ever questions that Daqo loved him, in the way he wanted to, or felt he could. He doesn't begrudge Daqo a single thing and won't really hear a negative word. Daqo was his Best Friend. His First Love. And he has a little shrine in Kohga's heart even now, 28 years later, where even though the torch he carried has died, the candles of remembrance will burn forever.
Noor--
Bouncy and bouyant, Noor was Kohga's partner from the summer after he became Master (which happened in the winter), for a year until the following autumn. She was Koh's longest-running Official partner until Sooga, although their romance was short compared to his relationship with Daqo of course.
Noor was about 5'4", and a plump, curvy gal. (Chubby Yiga other than Kohga. Reblog. You agree.) She was also Footsoldier trained and skilled at close hand-to-hand and knife combat. A good martial artist, and with that "I could kill you easily" charm that many Yiga share, lol.
Her faaaavorite thing to do was dancing. She looked forward to every single Yiga festival because most of them eventually involve dance circles and music. She was usually the first in her group to jump up and pull the others into a routine. And she was good. With an acrobatic flip or twirl, and with a hearty stomp in her feet. Whatever the music called for! Indeed, even in her fighting, she'd seem to be moving in rhythm--whether she intended or even realized it or not.
She was also a singer, with a very pleasant middle-range voice. One could often catch her humming and singing quietly to herself while she worked or walked about. This didn't go unnoticed, and as a child Noor would sometimes get gently chided by teachers for not staying quieter in lessons. Her friends would also teasingly ask her "what song she was working on" or say "heard you coming!" etc. It was affectionate, no worries. Noor was very well-liked and plenty of times, people in her vicinity would find themselves joining in and harmonizing with her little tunes. <3
Noor loved mushrooms. Any kind. Every kind. If she had to pick a kind of cooling food to eat before going outside in summer, it'd be chillshrooms. Sunshrooms for the cold. Zapshrooms for the spicy-umami little zing they put into a meal. Even silent shrooms, despite their bitterness. If the food at the dining hall had mushrooms in it and a friend didn't want theirs, they could hand 'em over to Noor. Gone in a flash.
She was a healer/nurse! As a kid, after getting her mask and her first more serious chore assignments, she was often tasked to help out in the medical area of the Complex (which includes the Apothecaries and also surgeons, doctors, and nurses. Not a huge group, but a significant and veryvery important unit), doing cleanup chores and running errands. She showed interest in the actual medical stuff and, after turning 16, was allowed to start training as a nurse. Nursing care in the Clan includes (but isn't limited to, I'm not making an exhaustive list just saying some things Noor did) helping surgeons with procedures, tending wounds, making sure ill patients get the right medicines, helping with bathing and other daily care for the elderly/sick/wounded, and doing healing energy transfers (ONE DAY I will FINALLY explain more about how I think Yiga/Sheikah magic works, but suffice it to say for now that in the nursing context it involves moving life energy around, with the nurse kinda acting as an energy version of a blood bag or, more accurately, a conduit directing new, healthy energy into a patient to promote healing and/or perk a weak or sick person up when they can't do it themself).
Noor quickly got a good reputation not only for being thorough and careful with her work, but also having an outstanding bedside manner. She was an excellent judge of what each patient she worked with would respond best to in the way of conversations and attitude--if they needed a sweet voice and affirmation, or jokes and a swapping of stories, or quiet patience and direct communication etc. By the time she was in her early 20s she was already given a lot of responsibility and trust.
So much so that when Mistress Hotaru's health began to noticeably worsen, Noor was assigned to provide medicine and energy transfers to the Master's mother herself! She considered it an honor. And Hotaru considered her a trusted companion fairly quickly. Even beyond the parameters of the work she was supposed to do as a healer, Noor spent time with Hotaru--encouraging her to keep writing poetry and play her shamisen or sing, for as long as her illness allowed, so she wouldn't lose her spark. Months later, when things began to take more of a downward turn, Noor was there reading to Hotaru and brushing her hair while giving her energy... Just, she really genuinely went over and above. As Kohga tells it, "that's just the kind of person she was: always doing more, with a smile in her voice when you needed it most."
Noor wasn't part of Kohga's core friendgroup when they were children. She was a couple years younger than him and he was too busy chasing after older kids and trying to act big and "mature," while she was staying with kids her own age for the most part. They knew each other, of course (the Clan isn't so huge, after all), and sometimes ended up in the same circles (dancing, gaming, play-fighting) on festival nights or at the same table for lunch between Footsoldier training sessions. But they were more like friendly acquaintances, before Noor's work with Hotaru began.
Kohga himself did a lot of tending to his Mama, as you'd expect! He insisted! But he was so grateful for Noor and they quickly became close friends as well, and spent a lot of time together. ((Kind of like a little family.)) Until, a few months after Noor was assigned to Hotaru, in the summer, one thing led to another and the two ended up spontaneously kissing goodnight, just both pushing their masks aside and going for it... And then Kohga chased Noor down and asked her if she "really meant it"... And Noor answered that she did, and that she didn't want to overstep because he was the new Master now, but...did he want to be partners? Reader, you know Kohga's delighted answer rang down the hall. <3 He also cried a little.
They were absolutely one of Those Couples, all pet names and sticky sweetness and smooches. Noor was the ONLY person EVER to get away with calling Master Kohga just "Koh." Only in private, but still. God they were just so cute together. Being silly, rubbing their cheeks together, Kohga picking the much shorter Noor up and carrying her around, sharing food, singing together, being playful in bed, just... They were so damn happy as a duo. It was plain for all to see, as the weeks and months went on, how in love they grew to be.
Their friendship also ran deep... Noor listened to Koh's hardships and helped assuage his grief over his father and Daqo (and the loss of his youth, really), and eventually, the following winter, the loss of Hotaru, too. For his part, Kohga helped Noor through some tough times too, like losses of patients she wished she could have magically fixed, including a beloved uncle of hers. They were there for each other not only to party and have a good time, but to dry each other's tears and be true partners.
By a year into their courtship, Kohga wanted to marry Noor. No buts about it. He was already dreaming up possible designs for ruby jewelry to propose with.
But one day, Noor told him she was feeling a little restless with her nursing work and wished she could get out of the Complex for something more serious. A real Footsoldier mission, you know? To stretch her legs, see some more of the world! Kohga agreed. Why not? She didn't have to stay cooped up in the Complex all the time. He told her to pick one of her friends to go out with, and that the next time something came up, he'd give it to them.
I've told you before that Noor didn't survive this mission.
And how Kohga blamed himself--cursed his position and all that came with it. This vibrant and kind, funny and clever young woman, only 24 years old, was gone from the world. She'd had so much more to be. So much light inside her. She was gone. It was his fault. I could say he's forgiven himself. But that would be a lie.
Noor really was a wonderful person. I truly wish I had more to write of her present and future. An ongoing song of her life. But all I have are Koh's memories. Which are many, and dearly cherished.
Well, reader, if you made it this far, thanks very much for taking a look at these OCs who I love, and who Kohga loved and still loves very much.
Age of Calamity is such a funny game when you think about it because most of the characters go through Events and use their strengths and suffer hardships and stuff, but honestly they mostly end the game the same as they started it. It’s not “bad storytelling” or anything to have most of the main characters (Link, the Champions, Impa, etc) not change very much character-growth wise, I’m not insinuating that. They’re heroes and it’s fun to watch them BE heroes and in some cases have nice heartfelt moments together, etc.
But it’s just hilarious to me that the characters in the game who DO get some form of character development arc are:
3. King Rhoam (a distant third place but he does realize his kid’s interests were helpful not frivolous and he apologizes and lets her continue leading the army and fights by her side)
2. Zelda (expected, she is the main character after all, and she gets to grow from doubting herself based on her father’s words and how special and talented everyone around her seems to be in comparison, and being upset at not being able to help more, to realizing her worth as a capable leader whose love and passions were what saved everyone)
1. MASTER FUCKIN KOHGA (goes from trying to peace out and let his lackeys take care of every fight, to desperately NOT wanting to leave Sooga and the others behind (poorly and obviously hiding it behind “come on stick together so you can protect me!” while he as the PC for your first play of that mission is clearly doing all the work to protect them); ends up not only joining Zelda’s faction to protect/get revenge for his Clan despite his hereditary beef with the royal family, but PERSONALLY taking to the battlefield including in the final deadly dangerous missions; declares during that final battle that HE is gonna “send that giant menace packing,” ie the very same monstrous entity he previously served)
Like. It’s not even close. Master “Top Banana” “Kill You All To Death” Kohga. Has THE most character development in the game.
And it’s just. So unexpected and therefore great and entertaining to me.

Well, reader, if you made it this far, thanks very much for taking a look at these OCs who I love, and who Kohga loved and still loves very much.
okay I’m reeling because the other night I was going on about Celessa? The girl who wants to retrace Zelda’s footsteps? Bae?
So I was just wandering merrily along and decided to pick a fight with a Yiga chick and I NOTICED
that the Yiga aren’t just picking random disguises. They’re impersonating actual travelers that Link might have come across and befriended. Because honestly? My Link followed Celessa around for over a day and saved her from monsters like four times (I was trying to get her to repeat text, okay, just… don’t worry about it). So coming up on Celessa crying and trying to comfort her and then she just straight up attacks you? ICE COLD.
They order a single black coffee and stare into the middle distance
They order a custom item so complicated the kitchen crew wants to cry
They get the kids' meal for the toy and will fight if they get the wrong one
They try to pay with exact change but pull out loose screws and a button instead
They get banned from the drive-thru. Again
Remaining time: 5 days 11 hours
