Yesterday was my birthday. Its okay that you didn’t get me anything. 🙂 Jennifer arranged for the United States Air Force Thunderbirds to fly over the house. Isn’t she amazing?!?! The news said that they were here for the Air Force Academy graduation, but we know the real reason… birthday! 🙂
I’ve got some new content that is just about ready to go. Until then I hope you all have a great Memorial Day weekend!

Desert Penstemon
This is a delicate Desert Penstemon flower I found while out on the trail in the Indian Peak Wilderness in Colorado. Outside of Colorado not to many people have heard of the Indian Peak Wilderness which borders Rocky Mountain National Park to the South. It is full of amazing and remote trails just like its more famous neighbor. More on those amazing trails is coming soon so stay tuned.

Rolling Hills of New Zealand
In 1642 New Zealand became one of the last places on the earth to be discovered by the western world. Perhaps the best was saved for last. #NewZealand
The sun sets on the rolling hills of New Zealand. It is scenes like this one that cause Jennifer and I to reminisce upon this countries landscape in almost a mythical way. It’s amazing that so much wonder is packed into such a small landmass. From the rolling hills and the contrast of the barren volcanic terrain found on the North Island to the fjords, rainforests and snow-capped mountains on…

A Crown Fit for a King
A colorful crown fit for a king. #KingsCrown
This gorgeous cluster of flowers is known as a King’s Crown. I love the way the tops of the green leaves curve over sheltering the crown of red blooms. A colorful crown fit for a king.

Tree Amongst the Stars
Magical stars in #RMNP #Colorado
I took this image of a tree amongst the stars in Rocky Mountain National Park. I used my headlamp to light paint the tree. I love astrophotography, but it is a challenge to get the exposure right on the stars and the objects in the frame. It also usually involves me sitting in complete darkness for several minutes at a time in remote locations wondering if a bear or mountain lion is going to…

A Broken Wall Sunset
This is one of the many places Jennifer and I were forced off the The Great Wall of China by its dilapidated condition. #Jiankou #TheGreatWallofChina
I meant to post this last Friday as a welcome to the Chinese New Year… the year of the dog. “Who let the dogs out?” Sorry, my younger self showing through there… For the rest of you that was the chorus to a fairly terrible song released in 2000. So this Broken Wall Sunset image is from the Jiankousection of the Great Wall of China. This is one of the many places Jennifer and I were forced off…

A Texas Sized Sunset
"That somehow the sky is bigger out there in that magical country where the cowboys and buffalo roam." #TexasSizedSunset #Sunset
The American West is full of big sky. As a young boy that was the image I was given of places like Utah, Montana, New Mexico and especially Texas. That somehow the sky is bigger out there in that magical country where the cowboys and buffalo roam. At times it seems like that highly improbable statement is somehow true. This moment of a Texas sized sunset is a great example of such a time.

Fly Eagles, Fly
What a game! #PhiladelphiaEagles #FlyEaglesFly #SuperBowlChamps
Congratulations to the Philadelphia Eagles on your Super Bowl LII victory! Fly Eagles, Fly!
Tonight’s game was one of the best games in NFL history. Both the Eagles and the Patriots brought their best and I am thankful the Eagles came out on top. It was nice to see two teams give it their all and play the entire game. No quit from either side. That is what a great sporting event is supposed to…

Captured in Ice
Frozen in time #RMNP #LakeHelene #magictrick
I found this small rock captured in ice in the middle of Lake Helene in Rocky Mountain National Park. I can only imagine that the rock was thrown to its resting place by a visitor as the water was still in the midst of freezing. This was 30′ from the shore line so there would be little other explanation for its placement. I love the little surprises Jennifer and I find while exploring our world.

Eaglesmere - Surprise Lake Loop Trail Guide
A guide to Eaglesmere - Surprise Lake Loop Trail #Backpacking #Eaglesmere #Colorado
Looking towards Eagles Nest Peak from Eaglesmere Lake on the Eaglesmere – Surprise Lake Loop Trail.
If you are looking for a long strenuous day of hiking in the woods for about 11.5 miles with 1,800′ of elevation gain then the Eaglesmere – Surprise Lake Loop Trail is for you. If on the other hand you like to take things at a slower pace, I would recommend this as a more leisurely 3 day, 2 night…

New Direction
To the road ahead, and the adventures we find together. #NewDirection #MomentsBeyond #MaroonBells #Colorado
Sorry for being absent last week with no warning or explanation. I caught the flu while on a business trip and it put me down for the week. I hope you all are able to avoid that experience this year. It has been several years since I’ve had the influenza virus and I can tell I am getting older. Either that or this was a very severe strain. It took me 6 days to get back on my feet. It also could…

Upper Ice Lake Basin
#UpperIceLakeBasin #Colorado
One of my favorite Colorado hikes of all time is still our trek to Ice Lake Basin. I highly recommend our Ice Lake Basin trail guide for planning your next visit here. The views were just absolutely stunning along the entire trail, along with the fun animals and flowers we saw along on the way.
Upper Ice Lake is technically the teal pool of water you see in the photo. Once we stopped for lunch…

Winter Robber
This little birdie, aptly named "camp robber," joined us for a snowy lunch. #CampRobber #RMNP
This is a true winter robber. Commonly known as a “camp robber,” or Grey Jay, this intelligent little birdie joined us for lunch while snowshoeing to Lake Helene in Rocky Mountain National Park. Human food is never good for wildlife so we spent the majority of the time luring him to our open palms with rocks and twigs. It only worked for while, but gave us the opportunity for some beautiful…

Bridge of Bertha
A unique waterfall that turns 90 degrees to Waterton Lake #WatertonLakesNationalPark #Canada
This is a view of the waters of Lower Bertha Falls as they pass under the Bridge of Bertha in Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta, Canada. I took this image from a rock that would have been underwater if the falls had been running at full force, making for a different angle of this stunning area.
I love the unique nature of this waterfall. The way it comes careening down the rock wallinto…
