Sunflowers

I dreamt about a sunflower once, its petals

Deep yellows, disseminating warmth from the sun,

Long stalks for stems, they brush my arms, and I smile

With cheeks a passioned red, like a rose, my black hair

A shocking contrast from the light yellows and greens,

In a field of sunflowers, I hold the seeds close to my chest,

Imagining the scrumptiously roasted crackle between my teeth,

My dress explores the moist surface, soil filled with earthworms

And natural compost, food for the living souls, and every breath

Smells like fresh air, molecules of earthy oxygen filling my lungs,

I stand still, and sway with the gently sweeping winds,

Each wave sends a warm tingle down my spine,

And I just pretend to be a sunflower

Amongst a field of them, I shall never be

As tall and happy as a sunflower, but I’ll always

Turn my head to the sun, growing until I know

The sky isn’t a limit anymore.
