"Gekko... You'll be fine," Gekko heard Sage's voice, but he couldn't see anything. He couldn't even say anything.
He tried to remember what happened. He recalled the shouts from everyone as he was in danger. God, so stupid.
This is all my fault... I dragged everyone down.
He wanted to apologize, he wanted to get up and find you so he could tell you. It's funny how the tables turned; now it's him in this situation, and he could be thinking about anything else more important, but it's you that's on his mind.
"Mateo," he heard Reyna's voice. "Quisiera saber qué fue lo que te pasó... It has to do with her, no es cierto?"
It's not her fault, mi Reyna. It's not yours either.
"What you asked me to do... I don't think I can do it," he heard as Reyna kept speaking. "This is the second time I've felt my own soul tremble in fear, and knowing that she has something to do with what happened, even if she wasn't there, it makes me mad. I just wish you would've told me."
I wish I would've told you too, but please... don't hold a grudge against her. I just love her, maybe a bit too much.
As he hears Reyna fighting tears back, Gekko wonders if you'll come visit him.
You were watching videos on your phone, still on the couch as Cypher worked. It's been a good couple of hours, and you were still seeking shelter in Cypher's lab.
Suddenly, you heard footsteps. Several. People were running down the hallway, though you couldn't tell who it was as they just ran past the door, who knows where.
"Huh, I wonder what happened," you muttered.
As soon as you spoke, Cypher's phone went off. He looked at it before picking up the phone, reading a message that he knew would most likely take a toll on you. Unsure if he should be the one to break the news, he minimized all of the screens and turned to you.
"I'll go check things out," he spoke. "You can stay here, if you'd like."
"I… guess? I mean I kinda want to check too but, uh," your voice trailed off. Sage had walked in and you completely forgot what you were going to say. Unsure of what to do, you averted Sage's gaze.
"Cypher," she said. "The equipment affected is in the dropout area. From what I heard, everything stopped working, guns included. I would've carried it here but I need to rush and…" she paused as she glanced at you before turning to Cypher again. "I need to treat someone in a critical state."
"No worries, I'll head over right now," Cypher said before leaving.
Sage didn't stay for long and made her way to what you assumed was the clinic, or the emergency room, who knows. All you knew was that you were extremely bored, and tired. You made a mental note to get a snack later after the commotion subsides.
It hadn't been much since Cypher left, probably 20 minutes or so. You decided to head out in the meantime. On your way to the kitchen, you saw a pretty beat up Jett with Yoru comforting her. You were relieved to see those two were finally together, but you were too pent up with your feelings that you felt guilty you distanced yourself again and didn't want to talk.
They seemed to notice you though, because Jett called out to you.
"(C/N)!" She ran towards you as Yoru followed. "(C/N)… I, listen, I'm so sorry," she panted for air. "I swear I was trying to stay and help but he-"
"I'm sorry, what are you apologizing for?" You asked, clearly not understanding the situation.
"Wait… you… you don't know yet?" She asked in response, worry flooding her.
"I have no idea what you're talking about," you said. "What happened? Are you okay?"
"You… should probably ask Sage or Brimstone for details," Yoru said as he placed his hand on Jett's shoulder.
Saying nothing, you simply nodded in response and continued your little journey towards the kitchen.
You were surprised to see Reyna there. She seemed... mad. Unsure if you should speak up, you simply walked in and silently grabbed some food, hoping she wouldn't lash at you or something, but the universe seemed to have other intentions.
"So," Reyna suddenly spoke up. "Care to tell me if something happened between you and Mateo?"
"Huh?" You turned to look at her, and so did she. "What do you mean?"
"Did something happen between you two?" Her tone of voice was rather serious but you could also tell she was genuinely pissed at something... or someone, and that someone for some reason seemed to be you.
"Why do you ask?"
"I'm asking because if there was nothing going on, he wouldn't have been on the brink of death during this mission," she spat.
"He nearly died?" You spat back. "And you're blaming it on me?"
You didn't know why, but you didn't feel guilty... yet. You were caught off guard by Reyna's attitude you didn't even process what either of you were saying. The only thing you were sure of is that you weren't going to take any Reyna's shit right now.
"What? You're going to tell me it's his fault then?" She approached as she towered over you, glaring. "I know him better than you do, muchachita, and I know him well enough to know he wouldn't willingly screw up a relationship he's so invested in only to be depressed during a mission."
"What do you know? You don't even know what happened!"
"That's exactly why I'm asking," Reyna was holding back. She wanted to throw you across the room so bad.
"It's none of your business, Reyna," you turned around and started to walk out, when the next thing you heard knocked you back into reality.
"His last words," Reyna said as you stopped walking. "His last words were 'tell (Y/N) that I love her' and went limp on me. His last goddamn words were that, and you're acting like you don't even care? What a girlfriend you are."
Reyna was the one that left first, leaving you alone, processing what just happened, and the information you just acquired.
Gekko went on a mission with Reyna, and most likely also Jett. Gekko was badly injured, not dead, but nearly died. He was distracted because of how he felt, because of what happened between you two, and his last words were asking to tell you that he loves you.
You sank to the floor as you came to realize the gravity of the situation. How could you be so dumb? How could you make him feel like that to the point it jeopardized a mission?
Dumbfounded by the newly acquired knowledge, tears started to fall down your face. You couldn't sob. Your throat suddenly became dry.
You had to see him, but something was keeping you from going. You had this internal conflict where you realized you may have been in the wrong, but you're still denying it. You're denying everything.
This can't be real, right?
You shakily stood up and started to slowly walk down the halls as your thoughts haunted you.
It's my fault.
But is he really...?
You didn't know for how long you were walking, but eventually, you were standing in front of the med bay's door, frozen. You hadn't realized earlier, but your hands were shaking. Your eyes were already swollen and you seriously don't think you can bare seeing Gekko unconscious.
I need to see him...
But I can't see him...
I don't want to see him...
Battling your voices, you didn't notice a certain shadowy figure appear behind you. "You seem broken, (C/N)," you heard Omen's voice echo. It was soft enough to not startle you, but you were still ashamed to face him in such state. "Is everything alright?"
"I... no, it's not," you replied. Your voice was soft, almost a whisper, but your throat felt so dry you couldn't speak normally. "I don't know what to do."
"When you can't block out the voices, persistence is a crucial tool," Omen said, placing one of his hands on your shoulder. "You're a strong agent, (C/N). Whatever it is that's troubling your mind, you can overcome it."
Before you could turn around to face Omen, he vanished, leaving you alone. Despite not interacting with him as much, his words gave you a bit of comfort. You glanced at the door and slowly approached it, placing your thumb on the fingerprint sensor before the door slid open.
The room was dimly lit, with a few screens showing graphs of what you assumed were vital signals. On the far end of the room was Gekko, laying down, unmoving.
As you slowly approached him, you felt the tears welling up again, and once you were right next to him, you held his hand. There he was, that beautiful face of his, his tattoos adorning his arms, and his earring hanging on his lobe.
"Mateo, I'm so sorry..." You sobbed, regret flooding your mind as you were recalling your moments together, and the last one, as unpleasant as it was.
Unbeknownst to you, he could feel your hand holding his, and he could hear you too. He desperately tried to squeeze your hand back, to move, to speak, anything. He needed to tell you that everything is going to be fine, that this wasn't your fault, and above all... he needed to tell you how much he loves you.
Gekko's efforts were in vain, for as much as he tried, nothing would happen. It was like he was trapped in this void, where he was powerless, hopeless even. He wondered if Fade or Omen could figure something out about this.
You were still engulfed in regret as you held Gekko's cold hand. You couldn't stand this. You even wondered how he managed to deal with his feelings while you were out after the mission at Lotus. Isn't it funny how both of you ended up in this state? It might even be odd if you ended like that because of the same person.
Wait... you still didn't have the details of the mission. What if your counterpart had something to do with this? You had to find out.
Letting go of his hand, you lowered your head so both of your foreheads were touching, and kissed him. Part of you wished he woke up like in fairy tales, but this was reality, and he didn't wake up.
Saying nothing else, you got up and headed to Brimstone's office, looking for answers. Whatever the truth is, you had a goal set.
You have to become stronger, no matter what.
"Why did you tell her to look for Brim or Sage instead? You know she's not on good terms with them," Jett asked Yoru as they were sitting on a bench in Sage's garden.
Yoru winced a bit. Jett was right; pretty much everyone knew you weren't on good terms, especially with those two and Gekko.
"I know," he replied. "But if you think about it, it's not really for us to give that information to her."
"But we're her friends, Ryo," Jett said.
"What would you have done if you were in her position?" He asked. "I just don't think it's easy to handle."
"Of course it's not!" Jett exclaimed. "But if I was in her position, I would rather have my closest friends tell me about it... especially if one of them was there."
Yoru sighed in response. This wasn't easy for anyone. As much as he wishes to ease your pain, he's not able to figure it out and it makes him feel like a bad friend, as shitty and annoying as he may be.
"Nevermind that, how are you feeling?" He asked, looking to change the topic.
"I'm fine... I didn't get too harmed, if I'm honest," Jett replied. "It's just the mental. Knowing that I could've been there when Omega (C/N) sneaked on Gekko, it just messed me up real bad."
"It was unexpected, no one saw it coming," Yoru said as he held Jett's hand, a bit flustered since he isn't used to physical affection. "Besides, we don't know this yet but he could've been slacking off when he was alone. It's difficult enough for any of us to sneak behind him during practice, it just doesn't make sense it was that easy for that Omega bastard to get him."
"Either way, it could've gone differently, y'know?" Jett sighed.
"Anything can go differently any time, especially during battle, Sunwoo," Yoru said.
Jett smiled a bit in response. "Fuck, I still can't get used to hearing my name," she laughed a bit.
"I can stop if you want me to," Yoru said. "I don't want to make you uncomfortable."
"No, no, it's fine," Jett said. "It's just... after what happened in Venice, I couldn't go out without getting anxiety from everything. Everyone just looked at me weird. Going to Ascent made it hard enough already for me to not remember the struggled back in Korea, but I know it's not something I can change just like that."
"It'll get better eventually, I promise," Yoru said.
Jett smiled. "Look at you being the loving and caring boyfriend."
"Oh, fuck you," Yoru looked away as Jett laughed.
"I'm kidding!" She exclaimed, then smiled dearly at him. "You're fine just the way you are."
"...you too," Yoru couldn't help but blush in embarrassment. He knows he's not the best boyfriend, but he tries to be. He's not used to this, after all, but he wishes to be a bit selfish and love someone dearly. Luckily for him, Jett did love him back.
He was happy.
Brimstone sighed yet again as he rummaged through files and more files. He was exhausted. The main factor here was the fact that your Omega self was scheming something, though no one could figure out what it was yet. For some reason, your counterpart is the only one with such a twisted mind out of everyone, which was pretty alarming.
She's nothing like you, and he knows it.
Still, there's this fear in him that you might go rampage as well and scheme something on your own. He's unsure if your counterpart is doing this on her own, but the chances are slim. It's even possible she's manipulating the whole system in Omega Earth, making it difficult to even get leads on what will happen next. It's always uncertain.
Brimstone knew he messed up by sending Gekko. In all honesty, he wasn't even aware something had happened between you two, or he probably forgot. He feels a bit guilty, he is against relationships in the protocol after all, but the fraternity rule was removed after Killjoy and Raze basically convinced him to when they first got together.
"They're still young," Sage had said back then. "Being in the protocol shouldn't deprive them from such experiences in life."
Viper had also sent him an email when Killjoy and Raze started dating. "If agents choose to risk personal attachment to each other, so be it. They're adults. They'll do what they want. We can spare them this sacrifice."
He didn't want to go against your relationship because of that. You had lost your parents, and ever since, he only wants you to be happy. It wasn't his right to prevent you from dating someone if you wished to.
Maybe he was too rough on you. He didn't mean for you to feel bad. His judgment seems to be so clouded lately, he's unsure what to do.
Maybe, he should listen to you a bit more.
"Brimstone," you suddenly walked into his office. Brimstone turned around in surprise. Of course, he knew it was just a matter of time before you stormed into his room seeking explanations.
"(Y/N)," Brim sighed. "I assume you're demanding an explanation right now." You nodded in response. "Sit down."
You sat on the couch as he dismissed the holographic displays and brought his chair in front of you. He looked tired.
"Gekko was severely injured by your counterpart," he said. "That's all there really is to it, for now..."
"My... mirror self did?" You repeated as you stared down and started to slowly boil with rage. "I swear I'm going to kill that bitch for good."
"She was killed," Brimstone said, and you looked up at him. "Jett killed her, but that's not important."
"What do you mean?" You asked.
"Their Sage," he sighed. "Chances are their Sage went there and revived her after everything was over."
"Are you certain?"
"If it weren't a possibility, I don't think she would've died so easily as per everyone's report."
He was right. It wouldn't make any sense for her to try to murder Gekko if she would die in the process.
"What are you planning now?" You asked.
"Do you think it's possible to infiltrate Omega Earth?" Brimstone asked with a serious expression.
"It's... possible, but you would have to figure out when and where everyone will be so you could swap them, but then if they're deployed to a mission and see someone that's not supposed to be back yet would raise suspicions..." You paused. "Though, I think I know the perfect agent for an infiltration."
"Chamber? He's out of the equation here," he said.
"What? Why?"
"He may be persuasive and have his way with words, but you know I never fully trusted him, though Viper has always kept tabs on him since he was recruited. I know I can't really doubt him as long as he delivers like Viper had told me back then, but... are you sure he's the only one capable of this?" He looked at you.
"Suddenly relying on me again?" You smiled a bit.
"I must admit, I am desperate."
"I can talk to him," you said.
"You're still off missions by the way," Brim said.
"Oh, fuck you," you cursed. "And here I was hoping I could go as well." Brimstone rolled his eyes.
"Just figure something out and keep me posted."
"Aye aye, boss," you gestured a salute motion to him and was about to leave when he suddenly called out.
"And, (Y/N)?"
"Yeah?"
"I'm... I'm sorry," he scratched his neck.
"Apology accepted," you smile.
"You're still off missions though."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever, old man."
You started to look around for Chamber until you were told he went out. You felt frutrated, given that this was a crucial topic to discuss with him. Feeling defeated, you went to look for Cypher but found Killjoy instead.
Killjoy was installing some updates on her bots, and you were surprised to see KAY/O there as well, especially since he had cables plugged in the back of his neck.
KAY/O seemed to sense your presence somehow and spoke without looking your way. “Greetings, (C/N).”
“Damn, how’d you know it was me?” You asked as you walked into the main lab.
“Your radianite levels are familiar to me since we tried your abilities frequently,” he replied, turning to look at you this time.
“Right. Hey KJ,” you waved at Killjoy, who was now typing into her laptop which was also plugged into KAY/O. A weird sight, to say the least.
“Hi,” she quickly said. “Give me a minute here, I’m just… finishing this. KAY/O stay still, gottverdammt.”
You awkwardly made your way further in and sat on a chair next to the human and the android, letting them finish their task. It’s safe to say you wouldn’t be thinking much about a certain green haired guy for a bit. Maybe.
Suddenly, you couldn’t help but think about KAY/O’s comment. Your radianite is familiar to him? Your counterpart came to mind, and then you started to doubt if the radianite levels between Alpha and Omega radiants are different in any way. If they are, that would certainly complicate the plans you had to infiltrate their headquarters.
You made a mental note to ask KAY/O about this later, once Killjoy was done with… whatever the hell she was doing with KAY/O and her bots. In the meantime, you kept overthinking about the worst case scenarios that could happen during the infiltration mission.
Chamber seems like the most suited agent since, as Brimstone said, he has a way with words, and could easily adapt to the paper of a possibly evil Chamber. In all honesty, you thought it’s hard to imagine Chamber as an evil person, but what are the possibilities? It’s an alternate world after all.
But what if their KAY/O can tell the intruder is an Alpha agent? You would have to ask Cypher to look through their scheduled missions and make sure both their Chamber and KAY/O are not in the headquarters to get rid of the most dangerous risk for this mission.
But what about your counterpart? She seems to be your exact opposite, and she couldn’t possibly have a way to tell there’s an Alpha agent there, right? Would she have developed a sort of device or mechanism with their Killjoy and Cypher that reads into agents’ radianite levels?
“(C/N)? (C/N)!”
“H-Huh?” You blinked as you came back from your trance.
“You’re hyperventilating,” Killjoy stated. “Are you okay?”
You didn’t even realize it but your hands were sweaty and your breath was quick. One of your hands was fanning your face.
“O-Oh, uhm… yeah, sorry.”
“Anyway, we’re done. Did you need something?” Killjoy looked at you.
“Do you think Omega Earth has a way to tell between Alpha and Omega agents? Specifically radiants?” You blurted out. KAY/O and Killjoy looked at each other before turning to you once again, clear confusion dawning upon Killjoy mainly, since KAY/O remains unexpressive. “I mainly ask because of what KAY/O said, saying my radianite is familiar to him. Is the radianite from Omega radiants any similar to ours?”
“It is,” he replied. You internally cursed. “Though the difference is mild, being they are alternate worlds, the radianite they look for is sort of the same. I don’t really know how to explain the difference though.”
"I see," you sighed in defeat. "So, hypothetically speaking, there would be no way to sort of like... uhm," you trailed off. If you keep asking, they might catch on to what you're planning. "I'm just rambling at this point... You know what? Nevermind what I asked, haha! Sorry for bothering you, bye!"
You awkwardly made your way out, smiling and waving at Killjoy and KAY/O, leaving them more than confused.
Meanwhile, Brimstone was still in his office, waiting for Sage to arrive. He had sent her a message after you left his office. There was something he needed to discuss, besides Gekko’s condition. Of course, he was worried that Gekko wouldn’t make it, especially when he’s the newest agent in the protocol, and your boyf- well… uh, ex-boyfriend?
In any case, if that were to happen, Brimstone knows it would backfire a lot. Firstly, how will he explain it to his mother? Second, having to deal with Reyna and you at the same time is going to be chaotic; Reyna would be capable of doing inhuman things (maybe) in rage of losing another person close to her, and you.. Well, Brimstone wants to believe you wouldn’t go rampage, but what are the chances? Having taken a look at your counterpart, he fears what may come regarding you.
Sage walked in, a little too breathless from running, but quickly stabilized as soon as she entered the office. “Brimstone,” she greeted him with a small bow, which she does out of habit.
“Sage, thanks for coming on such short notice,” Brimstone said as he stood up from his chair and guided her in. “I know you’re busy with Gekko’s recovery treatment and everything.”
“It’s fine, I can only assume what it can be about if it was on short notice,” Sage said, before sitting down on the couch. “Is it about her?”
Brimstone nodded, then sat back down on his chair facing her. “I talked to her and I made it clear she’s still off missions but…”
“You’re aware she still will attempt something,” Sage finished.
“I don’t know what to do,” Brimstone sighed, looking at the roof. “I can’t restrain her, that has already backfired, but what can actually keep her from doing something by herself?”
“Realistically speaking,” Sage breathes, “I don’t think there’s anything that could work, but rather someone.”
“What are you implying?” Brimstone asked as he looked back at her.
“I.. What I mean is, everyone around here knows Gekko loves (Y/N) and she loves him back, but right now that’s fractured because of, well… no one knows but them.” Sage said as she struggled to explain in a logical way. “They know but at the same time they don’t. They are still aware of their own feelings but they are not aware that they still love each other. I saw (Y/N) go into the med bay. I didn’t sneak up on her because I knew she needed that moment, but Brimstone… the look in her eyes. It spoke louder than anything I’ve ever seen.”
“So the only way to keep her from going to dangerous missions is by waking Gekko up or something… That’s the only way they can both come to terms with whatever happened,” Brimstone sighed and stood up, turning to a pile of docs on his desk.
“Exactly that… It’s why I’m trying so hard to stabilize him, but I can’t even get his little buddies out of his pouch. The pouch is intact, but I don’t know if they are unable to leave it or if they just chose not to,” Sage said, looking down at her hands.
“Gekko is a Radiant, right?” Brimstone asked, still facing the pile of papers.
“We can’t fully confirm if he is, but if he is… he’s not like the others,” Sage replied. “His hypothetical first contact with Radianite wasn’t during the First Light, it was after, and not in the same way every Radiant has encountered it. Gekko sort of fuzed with the little creatures, which are made of Radianite, so it wasn’t like Radianite emanated from somewhere like it did for the rest of us.”
“I see,” Brimstone said as he scratched his beard, then turned to look at Sage. “You’re probably going to have to work with Viper on this but, do you think you could try using Radianite to stabilize him?”
“You mean with another source of Radianite that’s not mine?” Sage looked at Brimstone with a confused look.
“Yes, so, sort of like infusing Radianite into him, or something like that.”
“That… You know we have never done that,” Sage said, wincing a little. “As far as we know, Kingdom has tested Radianite but not on humans.”
“I know… but, do you think it’s worth the risk?” Brimstone asked with a genuine look of concern. Sage could tell he was willing to try if it meant saving Gekko and you in a way.
Sage paused and sighed. Being a healer, of course she would have her thoughts about infusing Radianite into someone in a medical manner. The only person close enough to be capable of something like that is probably Viper, but would she agree? Would it be safe?
“We can’t infuse pure Radianite into him… We would have to work out a way to safely infuse it or something,” Sage said as she stood up. “You’re going to have to talk to Viper about this.”
“I will, I will. I just… We’re running out of options everywhere,” Brimstone sighed.
“It’ll take time so, just make sure she has something else to work on or something like that.”
“I think she’ll stay busy for a few days… Hopefully,” Brimstone said as he looked away.
“Care to elaborate?” Sage worrily asked.
Brimstone proceeded to explain the plan he had suggested to you and what you had in plan with that, and he also expressed how unsure he was of Chamber taking part of it. Sage then understood why he was so stressed about this whole situation. They need to figure out a way to wake Gekko up before this mission is carried out.
“I’ll… We need to talk to Viper right now if that’s the case, Brimstone,” Sage said, crossing her arms and looking at the floor.
You didn’t realize, but you were back at the med bay, where Gekko is. Drowsily making your way in, you sighed, sat down to a chair next to him and sank your head on the edge of his bed. You noticed his pouch resting on the small table next to him, and you wondered if any of his little guys could come out. You slowly reached out for the pouch and placed it next to Gekko’s arm, wrapping your arms around both, silently tearing up.
“I’m sorry…”
It came out as nearly a whisper, but you couldn’t help but struggle saying those words again, and again.
“I’m so… so sorry, Mateo.”
You gritted your teeth as the rage from earlier returned. You will never forgive your mirror self for this.
“I promise, no… I swear I’ll bring down that damned Alpha me, even if it’s the last thing I do.”
You turned your head a little so you could see Gekko’s face.
“It’s very likely to be the last thing I do… and for that, I’m sorry in advance.”
You allowed more tears to fall down as you treasured the possibly last moments with him. There’s no turning back after you plan things out with Chamber and Cypher. Even if the plan goes wrong, you’ll do anything to somehow make things better…
Eventually, you fell asleep.
Reyna walked in with some flowers she was planning to leave for Gekko. The first thing she noticed was how you were asleep next to him and his pouch. She winced a bit at the sight, but made her way in nonetheless.
She looked down at you, then at Gekko, and frowned. Placing the flowers down on the table, she sighed, got a blanket and carefully covered you with it.
“You two… You’re still so naive, so young and naive,” Reyna said out loud. “Mateo, whatever your choice is, I’ll try to accept it.”
With nothing left to say, or do, she made her way out.
The next day, you finally got ahold of Chamber to talk about your infiltration plan. You've been trying to chase him all day, until you caught him in the kitchen drinking coffee.
"CHAMBER!" You threw the kitchen door open, panting as you had ran as fast as you could when you finally heard of his whereabouts.
"Mon dieu, (C/N), what's the rush?" Chamber said as he took a sip of his coffee.
"I.. need to talk... to you- give me a sec," you breathed out. You kept gasping for air in between words that you still needed a moment to catch your breath.
As you were struggling to breathe again, Chamber went and brought you a cup of water in the meantime. Struggling a bit less, you took the cup, thanked him, and downed that cup as if it was the last thing keeping you alive.
"Now, what's the matter, ma chère?" Chamber asked as you both sat down.
"Okay, first off, quit the French pet names, it seriously creeps me out sometimes," you laughed a bit as a way to restrain yourself from saying you have a boyfriend as an excuse; because you kind of don't have a boyfriend at the moment.
"That will be a bit of a challenge, but I understand," Chamber smiled.
"And uhm, second," you averted his gaze for a second. You didn't think you'd be this nervous to talk about a plan like this. Sure, you tend to be reckless, but this needs to be meticulously planned. "I need your help to infiltrate Omega Earth."
"Omega Earth?" Chamber echoed.
"Well, Legion's headquarters, to be exact..."
"My, my. Care to explain the details?" Chamber asked as he crossed his arms in attention.
"It's.. well, Brim was the one that came up with the idea, to kind of know what they're up to. Out of all Omega agents, my counterpart is the one we know of the least, and after the last mission... Well, I want to put an end to her threats," you briefly explained.
"I see," Chamber said as he took yet another sip. "And you want me to help you, you said."
"Yes, I think you'd be a perfect agent for the infiltration-"
"But you also want to go," Chamber interrupted.
You bit your lip in response, not thinking the wording would make it so obvious. Chamber chuckled in response.
"I'm not against it, but you might get in trouble for that."
"Oh, trust me, I'm aware..." You rolled your eyes as you spoke. "But there's one thing that worries me."
"Which is?"
"Our Radianite levels. I've been overthinking this since I talked to KAY/O; he said my Radianite is familiar to him, so I'm like thinking, what if their KAY/O can tell we're Alpha agents? I figured we'd have to infiltrate when their KAY/O isn't there, but we don't know what my Ultimate is, and what if my counterpart already knows how to use their Ult? What if they also got their Killjoy to make this machine or artifact that can read agents' Radianite levels? We'd have to bring someone that doesn't have Radianite levels at all, but the only agent I can think of is Cypher, but then again-"
"Ma chèrie, slow down, breathe," Chamber interrupted again.
You blinked and took a couple of breaths to calm down. "I just don't know how to roll this out. It needs to be a perfect plan."
"If a perfect plan is what you need, worry less. I only need one of Cypher's hacking USBs when we actually infiltrate so I can retrieve information from them," Chamber said.
"But what about-"
"Do not worry about the Radianite levels. I have a plan to walk around that, trust me. If you decide to also go, you can tail your counterpart and put an end to her threats as you say you wish to do."
"Yeah.. Okay," you breathed out. "When would we plan this?"
"Oh, we can start scheming and pay a visit right away if you wish," Chamber smirked.
"You mean like, right now? But how? We don't even know which agents are in the headquarters and who isn't."
"Trust me, we won't go to their quarters yet, just get information," Chamber said as he stood up, offering to link his arm with yours. "So, should we be on our way?"
Overthinking this right now wouldn't be of any help, and you were aware of it. When would you ever have another chance like this?
You shook your thoughts away.
Whatever it takes.
You linked your arm with Chamber's.
Sage nervously stands at the door. She didn't think it'd be this scary to ask Viper for help with something like this. She already knows of the background story with her and Reyna regarding her sister. Would it be too much to ask?
The door opened all of a sudden as Sage was lost in thought, making her jump, and a confused Viper wearing her lab coat stood at the other side, eyeing Sage suspiciously as she held a mug with coffee.
"Sage," Viper said in her neutral tone. "What brings you here?"
"Viper! Uhm," Sage said as she tried to gather her thoughts together. "Are you busy.. by any chance?"
"Asking me out or something?" Viper raised a brow at Sage.
"No! Not at all, I mean," Sage felt her cheeks warm up a bit due to embarrassment. Where did she get that idea from? "I need your help."
"It's really odd of you to come to me for help," Viper stated. "What could you possibly need help with?"
"It's Gekko... He's not waking up and I've tried everything I can with my Radianite," Sage explained. "Brimstone made a suggestion, but I don't know how to deal with it nor how to feel about it. I thought maybe you would... probably be more sure of this rather than myself."
"You mean infusing Radianite on him?" Viper asked.
"Wait, you already know?" Sage blinked at her.
"Brimstone filled me in. Why do you think I have my lab coat on?" Viper grinned a bit. Grinned? Viper? What?
"Oh," was all Sage could say in response as she stared at her.
Viper tried to not laugh at Sage's reaction but failed, letting out a brief but audible enough chuckle that made Sage blush. A lot.
"Come on, I first need a sample of his blood to look into his Radianite levels. We'll start from there and go to my lab," Viper walked past Sage with her hands in the pockets of her lab coat.
"Uh-huh," Sage shook her head and followed Viper from behind, analyzing the events that unrolled just now.
Once they arrived to the med bay, they carefully retrieved two blood samples from Gekko, then headed to Viper's lab. Sage was awfully silent, given the fact that she was suddenly nervous around Viper. Sure, their principles aren't exactly aligned when it comes to views of life, but she couldn't deny that Viper seemed more... acceptant of Sage as of lately. Weird.
"What's weird?" Viper asked. Had Sage spoken out loud?
"Oh, uh... Gekko's situation," Sage quickly replied. "I... just can't think of a logical reason why he would be out for so long from just a knife wound."
"You're right," Viper agreed. "Logically speaking, he would be out from blood loss but he didn't seem to lose that much blood."
"Oh, right, you were there," Sage mumbled as she reached for the vial.
"You seem... thoughtful."
"Oh?" Sage looked at her. "Is it that obvious?"
"I mean, you've been stressed lately, right?" Viper said as she took a sip of her cup.
"Ah..." Sage averted her gaze, turning her attention to the vial in her hand. Viper had given her one of her spare lab coats. Her scent lingered, and Sage couldn't shake it off quite easily. "I guess so."
"Whatever it is, I hope it's resolved quickly."
"I hope so too."
They spent the rest of their time analyzing Gekko's blood sample, occassionally stealing glances at each other. Maybe Sage was overthinking it, but Viper seemed concerned.
As Viper saw the graphs on the screen, Sage's eyes narrowed for a bit until she noticed Viper caught up on something odd about Gekko's blood.
"Something's not right," Viper muttered. "His Radianite levels are... almost too low for a Radiant."
"Are you sure? You know we don't know if he falls into the Radiant category yet," Sage asked.
"He at least has to be somewhere in the middle of a human and a Radiant, but still, his levels are lower than the last time I took a sample when he first arrived, which were the same as a Radiant," Viper explained.
"But... how?" Sage asked, looking at the graph.
"I knew I should've retrieved that Omega's knife, something seemed... odd about it."
"Odd how?"
"Call it a gut feeling," Viper sighed, "but Omega (C/N) could've shot Gekko at any given point, yet she resorted to using the knife instead. Maybe it's just because she's a sadist herself, but still."
"Now that... you mention it, Cypher said something about their weapons being focused on draining Radianite from the intel Killjoy retrieved back in Pearl. We thought it was a sort of nuclear weapon, but they were solely focused on melee weapons," Sage said as she put the pieces together. "Could it be..."
"Get that intel, ask Cypher for details," Viper said in a serious tone. "I'll figure out a way to restore Gekko's Radianite levels. I'll have to do some testing with the other vial we have." She looked at her. "Let me handle this."
"Okay... okay," Sage exhaled. She was nervous. She never thought Omega would reach this point of extracting Radianite from Radiants themselves.
Things seemed to be taking a bad turn.
"Okay, I know you told me to trust you, but, what the hell, Chamber?"
You faced the two Chambers in front of you with an exasperated expression in what seemed to be one of Chamber's suites in LA. Meeting up with Omega Chamber was the last thing you expected today. Chamber had asked you to not ask many questions and to just trust him, but this was making it almost impossible.
"Relax, I mean no harm," Omega Chamber said.
You didn't reply, simply looking at the other Chamber.
"You said you needed a way, and well, since you asked me, this is my way," Chamber said.
"Our way," Omega Chamber corrected.
"Right..." You couldn't help but shuffle your hair in frustration. "So, what now?"
"Given that our dear (C/N) has been... a tad of a pain, I'm willing to cooperate," Omega Chamber said. "We didn't really intend to take it too far, but her ways of handling things are almost... extreme."
"You don't say..."
"In any case, whilst I do admit she's not to my liking, I'm afraid I cannot let you kill her just yet," Omega Chamber added. "I have a few pending things with her that I would like to... deal with."
You did admit, you were kind of pissed about that, but delaying your mirror self's plans and getting to the bottom of her evil schemes was something you did prioritize.
"You can ask as many questions as you'd like," Omega Chamber said, "I'll answer to the best of my ability."
"This is the safest way so far," Chamber added. "It's a way to keep you from trouble and danger for now. Once you know what you need, you can plan further ahead."
You sighed. "This really wasn't how I expected to get things done but, it'll do. Okay, first question. Is Omega (C/N) able to use her ultimate?"
"Why, yes. Can you not?" Omega Chamber tilted his head in confusion.
"Uh, not really, no," you replied.
"Do you at least know what your ultimate is?"
"Uhm..."
"Oh, my."
"Just tell her," Chamber said, trying to spare you the embarrassment.
"Right, (C/N)'s ultimate is able to break down any mechanical objects as she wishes, regardless of them being powered by battery or not. If I'm not mistaken, depending on how many objects she disables at a time, the less and smaller they are, the longer she can disable them for. Take for example, a simple camera can be disabled for 5 hours or so, while a big weapon like an Odin can be disabled or broken for 1 hour, so if she tried to stop 5 Odins, she would only be able to stop them for 12 minutes. I believe she calls it Breakdown."
"That... actually makes a lot of sense," you mumbled. "So she used her ult to disable my earpiece back in Lotus."
"Ah, the Lotus mission," Omega Chamber said. "Yes, her goal was to... torment you, as she said back then."
"What's her deal anyway? Why is she doing all this?"
"That, I'm afraid, I do not know. None of us do," Omega Chamber paused. "The only agent that probably knows the reason is our Gekko, but he is yet another victim of her."
"What do you mean?" You asked.
"Their relationship was... an extremely toxic one, to say the least," Omega Chamber reluctantly replied. "I wouldn't be surprised if he actually admitted to her being manipulative."
"So they also dated?" You asked.
"Our worlds are like opposite mirrors, there are things that are the complete opposite, but some things stay the same," Chamber spoke this time. "Personality wise, we're similar, yet different."
"Exactly that," Omega Chamber agreed. "While you and your Gekko may have a healthy relationship, it's not the same for ours. I must admit, you're much more likeable than our (C/N) though."
"So she's... the exact opposite of me. Do we even have something in common?"
"Besides your appearance and your abilities, I don't think so. Maybe your past is the same, or a bit different, but it's not something I would know," Omega Chamber said.
"Okay... what about uhm, security wise at your quarters?" You asked.
"It's pretty much the same as yours, if I'm not mistaken," Omega Chamber said.
"Oui, they're the same," Chamber confirmed for Omega Chamber.
"The same..." You echoed. There had to be something, somewhere. Otherwise, it wouldn't feel so easy to plan things out. "How... Chamber, how trustworthy is he actually?" You turned to Chamber.
"He's trustworthy. I know it seems... almost too convenient, but trust me- trust us. Just don't tell Brimstone about this," he winked.
You sighed in response. Truthfully, you couldn't grasp your mind around the situation, but you couldn't allow yourself to dwell on it, especially when you're trying to deal with something crucial.
Somewhere, in the back of your mind though, you couldn't shake off the uncertainty of something going wrong. As much as you tried to push it away, you just couldn't, so you kept questioning Omega Chamber and taking note of the important bits.
"Cypher," Sage walked into Cypher's lab unannounced, startling him as he fixed one of his tripwires. "I- oh, I'm sorry..."
"No worries," he raised his hand. "Tell me, to what do I owe the pleasure of your visit?"
"I need a full report of the intel Killjoy retrieved from Pearl, the one we thought was a nuclear weapon," Sage said as she approached him. "It's important."
"I'm aware it is," Cypher turned around and typed something on his keyboard. "Why, is something the matter?"
"I was working with Viper, trying to find a way to regain Gekko's consciousness by treating him with Radianite, but we discovered his levels were abnormally low, and Viper said it might've had something to do with the knife Omega (C/N) used against him," Sage explained.
"Hm, that does make sense," Cypher said, then stopped typing and looked at Sage. "Wait, you? Working with Viper?" Sage could've sworn he raised an eyebrow at her.
"That's... irrelevant."
He looked at her for a few seconds, then turned to his computer again, simply humming in response. Sage couldn't help but get a bit flustered at his reaction. It's true that Viper working with her isn't an expected sight, but was it really that odd of an occurrence?
"Alright, here's the full report I analyzed," he handed Sage a tablet. "Let me know if you have any questions or if you require tech related help."
"Thank you," she paused as she took the tablet. "Do you think they actually managed to do it? Create weapons that can drain Radianite from Radiants?"
"Given the circumstances, I'm afraid so," Cypher replied. "I'll admit, I didn't expect they would progress so fast on it. We'll have to retrieve a sample next time we encounter Omega agents."
"I'll take note of that for the next mission," Sage said. "Thanks again."
"My pleasure."
Sage made her way to Brimstone's office to update him on her discoveries with Viper so far. She was concerned, unsettled even. If Omega Earth actually managed to develop weapons that drain Radianite and that's why Gekko's unconscious, it would explain many things, even your wound back from Lotus.
"Brimstone?" She knocked on the door and waited. When she didn't get a reply, she slowly opened the door, revealing a sleeping Brimstone laying on the couch. She sighed at the sight. "Seriously... I don't know who's worse when it comes to overworking..."
Brimstone slowly stirred awake, noticing Sage's presence and sat up. "Sage."
"Take it easy, you don't need to sit up," Sage said. "I'm just... here to update you."
"Okay," he laid back on the sofa. His hair was a mess.
"Viper said Gekko's Radianite levels are lower than what they were when he first got recruited," Sage started. "Do you remember those files Killjoy retrieved from Pearl when she was sent with Neon and Reyna?" He nodded in response. "It seems that... well, this is just a hypothesis for now, but we think that they somehow developed melee weapons designed to drain Radianite from Radiants, which would explain Gekko's current state, and also (Y/N) being unconscious when she returned from Lotus."
Brimstone took a few seconds to process this, then sat up abruptly. "What?"
"I know, I know, it may be a long stretch, but it's the only logical explanation we came up with so far. Viper's currently working on finding a way to stabilize Gekko, but she told me to ask Cypher for the full report from that mission to analyze it," Sage tried to calm him down. She didn't really mean to make him worry.
"It's a long stretch, but it's not impossible," Brimstone said. "This changes many things, if that's actually true. Agents will have to be extra careful from now on."
"Yes... I can ask Harbor to specialize on a training focused on defense against melee weapons. I know we prioritize gun fight, but you know not everyone is skillful with melee," Sage suggested.
"I'll discuss that with him," Brimstone said. "You focus on Gekko's recovery with Viper."
"Yes, sir," Sage replied.
"Anything else?"
"That's all for now."

"Wingman, put that down!" You exclaim as the yellow blob runs around with a now ruined ribbon. You sigh, trying not to get desperate, but failing horribly.
It's been a year since Gekko arrived to the protocol, and you wanted to surprise him. Usually, anniversaries in the protocol are treated like birthdays: cake, gifts, lots of food and lots of partying. Since personal information is, well, left personal, it's actually the agent's choice to reveal their actual birthdays or not. No one hasn't really shared their birth dates though.
"Wings, come on! Help me out here! Mateo will be back soon," you pout, hoping to make the little guy feel a bit of remorse and help you after 3 hours of handcrafts.
Reluctantly, Wingman waddled back to you, holding up the ribbon, and sat down on the floor as you polished up the wool vest in front of you. Gekko's original vest had been damaged during battle when he saved you once, so it only made sense to make him a new one.
It wasn't so different than his usual vest: green with purple and orange. The only difference is that you crocheted his little crew on the bottom part. You were proud of it. It only took you like 8 hours to get everything right, but other than that, the question was whether he would like it or not.
Sure, you've been dating for almost a year, and usually he's the one that gets you gifts that you always like, but getting gifts for him is quite the odyssey. It's like he knew everything about you; and he kind of does.
Now, the question at hand was... when do you give the present to him?
During dinner? After dinner? Before dinner?
You started to bite your bottom lip again as you fell into the nervous pit again, until Wingman placed his little paw on your knee, gurgling something you didn't quite understand yet. Still, you smiled at him and finished wrapping up the vest, along something else you wished he loves from the bottom of your heart.
"Oigan, what's up with y'all? You haven't let me leave this place for like, 3 hours now," Gekko groaned as he glanced at Neon and Jett.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Neon mumbled.
"I'm pretty sure you do," Gekko rolled his eyes as he raised his Vandal for the hundredth time.
Neon and Jett insisted on training today, no explanation provided to Gekko. Everyone around knows that it's Gekko's anniversary, but he seems to have forgotten. The entirety of the crew knew, so it was taken as an advantage to distract him while everyone else made preparations.
"You're being sloppy," Jett said, showing how the weapon is meant to be held.
"Of course I'm being sloppy, we've been doing this for 3 hours!"
Gekko was tired. He wanted to see you and just nap with you in his arms. Was that too much to ask right now?
"Tengo sueño y acá estoy valiendo madres con ustedes dos," he mumbled.
"We no hablar español, dumbass," Neon laughed as she elbowed him. "Jett, come on, this should be enough, right?"
"Hm, nah, one last round. Come on, Gekko!"
A loud groan was heard across the range, and you can guess who it was from.
Dinner wasn't fancy, it was just warm and cozy. All agents were there, and it made Gekko confused considering everyone eats at different times and some agents eat in their rooms. He didn't complain though; the food was awesome and he loved interacting with everyone.
"Where in the absolute hell did you get these tamales from? They're so good!" Gekko exclaimed as he devoured his third tamal.
"Where else do you think, cariño?" Reyna laughed across the table as she sipped wine.
"I didn't think you guys would even want to eat tamales though," Gekko looked at everyone around.
"He really is clueless, huh..." Chamber sort of sighed and laughed at the same time, which was followed by a couple other agents.
"Hey, don't blame him, it's quite literally his first time, even though he's been at the others' throughout this year," you commented.
Gekko gave you and everyone else a weird look. "Am I missing something here? As far as I know, it's not my birthday."
Everyone laughed.
"Honey, we know," you patted his head, which only got you a blushing and silent Gekko in response. "Okay, who's breaking this down to him?" You looked at Sage and Brimstone.
"I will, don't worry," Sage said. "Since we keep everyone's birthday private, it's a tradition of ours to celebrate the date they joined the protocol instead. I'm kind of amused you didn't realize this sooner, Gekko," Sage smiled.
"OOOH. WAIT. That's... That's what it was?" Gekko's response just made everyone else laugh again, louder this time. "Chale, I didn't even remember when I joined."
"Well, we knew, so we all took advantage of that," Jett said.
"Man, you two gave me hell for sure."
"Sorry not sorry," Neon replied, sticking her tongue out.
After dinner, everyone gathered in the mess hall with a couple of drinks. Some drank a lot, some didn't. Of course, the life of the party was Raze, and with Breach joining in, those two were eventually drunk.
Gekko was yawning at some point, and you noticed. You slowly approached him, raising a brow at him suspiciously.
"Tired, mi amor?" You asked casually. It was still a bit hard for you to get used to calling him by Spanish pet names, but Gekko's reactions were always worth it even if you messed up the pronunciation sometimes.
"Kinda, yeah," he yawned again. "I spend most of the afternoon training with Jett and Neon. I didn't realize they were just trying to distract me."
You laughed in response. "Well, do you want to dip then?"
"Honestly? Yeah."
You hadn't given him your gift yet, so you two ended up going to your room. Your suggestion.
Standing in front of your door, Gekko embraced you just before you could reach out to the handle.
"You seem a bit... nervous? What's up?" Gekko asked as he held your chin up.
"I..." Crap, he always gets you when he pulls off the chin grab. "Okay, uhm... I, haha..." Now you were blushing.
Gekko smiled and kissed your cheek before reaching to the doorknob behind you and opening the door. "Inside?" You nodded in response.
Once inside, you closed the door behind you and turned to look at him. "Sit down for a bit."
"Am I in trouble?" Gekko asked.
"Nah," you smiled, "just go sit."
Gekko did as told and you retrieved the two boxes sitting in your closet; a small box and a bigger box. You held both boxes behind you as you stood in front of him nervously.
"I didn't know when to give you these, but..." you held the bigger box out towards him. "Happy first year at the protocol."
Gekko smiled brightly in response, unwrapping the box and opening it. You heard a small gasp when he held up the vest in front of him. "Oh por dios, you did this?" You nodded in response as he put it over his black shirt. "Amorcito, I love it! You even got my lil' guys here!"
"I'm really glad you like it, honey," you smiled.
He stood up to hug and kiss you, until he noticed you still had something behind you. "What's that?" He asked curiously.
"This is.. another gift, duh," you said. "I just.. don't really know if you'll like it." You gave the box to him and watched as he opened it.
"Amor, I love it," he smiled endearingly as he wore the green and (INSERT YOUR FAVORITE COLOR) handmade bracelet with your initials. "You did this yourself too?"
"Yeah, haha," you blushed. "I have one too, see?" You pulled up your sleeve to reveal the same bracelet over your wrist.
"Thank you, cariño. Me encantó," Gekko pulled you into a proper hug this time, and then proceeded to plop on your bed with you still in his embrace.
"Mateo!" You laughed together. "I'm really glad you liked everything. I was worried it wouldn't be your thing..."
"Bebé, how could I not love anything you give me? You know me," Gekko smiled at you.

"You might want to keep your little friends in check." Reyna remarks. She leads a steady pace as she guides Gekko through the halls of what will be his new home away from home, yet the new recruit still has to fight to keep up. "There are quite a few rule-enforcers here."
His eyes wander everywhere, from the mundane tiled floors through which he could see his own reflection to the interesting sign declaring the firing range. He rushes forward to catch up with Reyna, "What do you mean?"
Instead of answering, she only nods her head towards one of his buddies. Wingman. "Hey! Dude, put that down!" Then there were "Mosh, Dizzy that is not how you play baseball! And not where you should, either." and finally "Thrash! You little monster, get back here!"
"That is what I mean." Reyna smirks, and Gekko could do nothing but laugh nervously.
"I promise they won't go wandering off, at least not without me."
☾⋆☆⋆☽
At first, he didn't know why Reyna would be so apprehensive; then, when his friends snuck out of his room without permission and caused havoc in the living quarters that led to Brimstone scolding him with a passive-aggressiveness he's never quite witnessed before, he understood. But it wasn't so bad—he kept them under control afterwards, and even then, there was only so much they could do in terms of destruction. He hadn't thought about what else they could do, at least not until he met you.
"Dizzy?"
Where was she? She couldn't have gone far. Well, she could fly, but she did it slowly. How could she have gotten past him so easily?
She's done it before, actually, usually in the mornings, but it was the afternoon now. She usually made her own way back to him too, but it had been to long and Gekko was starting to worry.
"Dizzy!" Gekko opens a door and calls obnoxiously, for he wasn't expecting what he saw before him.
He saw you, and her; and you were sleeping, the both of you. Dizzy slept often when there wasn't much action, and he guesses that you do too, although his loud call disturbs you from your sleep.
You stretch your limbs above your head and roll over to face him, unfortunately knocking Dizzy off the couch.
"Shit, sorry for waking you."
He swoops down to pick Dizzy off her back but you do it before he can. The little critter snuggles into your chest and Gekko swear she can feel the gesture himself as his chest warms.
"Mm, 's all good." You reply, words slurred like you're too lazy or tired to put in the effort to speak.
"You sleep a lot." Why did he say that?
"Do I?" You yawn, "Sometimes the couch is more comfortable than my bed could ever be."
"Maybe it's the feeling that it's different." Gekko suggests. He wonders if he should sit, but where would he? You take up the length of the couch and anywhere would be intrusive. He didn't want to be intrusive but... he also wanted to sit with you. He settles for an arm rest.
"You mean, like novelty?"
"What?"
You snicker, and he feels a warmth spread up to his cheeks, whether shame or something else, he doesn't know. "Nevermind."
Maybe he shouldn't have stuck around in the first place. Gekko sweeps Dizzy from your embrace, missing the disappointment on your face in his haste, and moves to make his quick escape with a swift excuse, "I think that was Reyna calling my name. Right? Yeah, I think so. I'll, uh, see you later."
He's out the door before he can even hear your own goodbye.
☾⋆☆⋆☽
"Reyna, I need you to make up an excuse for me."
The conversation starter certainly gets Reyna interested. "Harbor needed you?"
"No, I mean, an excuse for why you would call me." At that, she raises an eyebrow. She also glances at Dizzy, who remains in Gekko's arms and not in his bag.
But first came making up an excuse, she cared for him, after all. "Gun training." It's only then that he notices the gun in her hands. Reyna raises a smirk and turns back to the targets, "Why?"
"Well, I..." Gekko grabs a rifle from the rack and decides to shoot along with her, maybe to keep his mind off things. "I don't know, really."
Reyna doesn't prod. Instead, she fixes his stance and continues to shoot.
He tries to focus, to recall everything Reyna's told him before on shooting. He's good at it, maybe not better than Reyna but certainly better than Neon; she relied more on her finger guns, after all, but today he was worse. Thoughts ran rampant through his mind without limit, and it felt like they would spill out from his ears.
He shoots and he misses and he shoots again and he misses again.
"¿Que paso, cariño?"
(What happened, dear?)
"No sé."
(I don't know.)
He takes a deep breath and steadies his gun on the target's head. You sleep a lot. Why did he say that, instead of anything else?
He shoots and he misses.
"Steady your gun, steel yourself–"
"I know." Gekko interrupts her, "You've said it a million times." He's too frustrated, lost in his mind that he doesn't watch his tone.
"Well, you're not following it today." Reyna's voice is like a dagger. It cuts his thoughts and brings him back to reality.
"Sorry."
She shakes her head, "You're off your game. Do you know why?"
"I'm acting before thinking."
"But now you're thinking too much."
Gekko can only offer a shrug. He only had one possible explanation, and that was it. Reyna sighs, "¿Supongo que es algo sobre tus sentimientos?" How could she tell? Gekko's face becomes the answer, and Reyna can read him easy. "A crush."
(I'm guessing it's something about your feelings?)
Gekko's had his fair share of crushes. He knows the telltale signs, he knows the heat on his skin, the sweat, the feeling he can't quite name, how his mouth can't catch up with his thoughts and his face won't seem to cooperate.
He's just not so sure he has one on you. What did he see in you? You were pretty, you were smart, you've saved his ass more than once in missions, you were handsome—could he go on? Yes, yes he could. Okay, he saw it.
Reyna breaks him out of his thoughts, "This is not something I can help you with."
"Why not?" She only raises an eyebrow in return and Gekko remembers who he's talking to. "Yeah, okay."
Normally she would fire back with sass but now she just laughs, "Sage would be better help."
☾⋆☆⋆☽
Gekko didn't seek out Sage's help. He didn't need it. This was just a simple crush. It would pass, just like most others. He was just crushing on you because of the–how did you put it?–novelty of it all. You were a new person in his life, a person much cooler than him. He was just adjusting to getting new friends so suddenly.
Now Thrash was gone. For a creature so loud, she made no sound when she snuck out of his bag and or his room.
"Thrash?" She could only have so much energy. Either he'd find her or her globule.
But then—a sound.
"You can't be sneaky anymore," He calls out as he walks, slower now in order to not startle her immediately, "I can hear you~"
As he rounds the corner, he spots her trying to hide behind a plant pot. He could see the top of her head behind the leaves. He walks even slower, makes his footsteps even quieter, and shuts his mouth. He would catch her soon, but only if he was careful. If he wasn't...
...she would run. "No, Thrash, don't go!"
And suddenly there was a chase. Thrash rounded sharp corners swiftly and Gekko followed behind much more sloppily. He held onto the wall's edge to swing himself around it and gain momentum, but she just kept going faster. "You have nowhere to go!"
☾⋆☆⋆☽
Watching the agents in the simulated training room was always good entertainment. Especially since the team took out the fierce nanobomb collab bot together, as now the agents wanted to try facing them on their own again. Doing it together proved it was defeatable; doing it alone would prove they were skilled.
On your end, you would rather save yourself the trouble... and also bet with Yoru along the way, which, really, was a scam.
"Why do I keep betting for the agents if we both know the bot will win?"
Yoru shrugs, "That's a problem for you and your wallet."
You scoff, "You little sl–"
Suddenly, a huge creature falls into your arms. You recognize her immediately as Thrash by the slimy feeling of her underside. You also recognize that she's knocked your mug out of your hands. What a detain! The problem is that mug was not yours, and instead, it was Commander Brim's huge dad mug. Oh, you were in so much trouble.
You brace yourself for the shattering of the porcelain but it never comes. Instead, you find Gekko again. He stands quickly with the mug in his hands and flashes you an apologetic smile.
Begging for attention, Thrash turns over on her back, placing her rough back against your hands instead and chirps as if to plead, and you know just what for. You scratch, scratch, scratch behind her ear, below her chin, and on her slimy stomach. She seems so pleased that she disappears into a globule right in your hands and takes her sticky residue with her.
"I'm so sorry." Gekko takes her immediately and places her in his bag.
"It's okay."
His eyes drag down and he gasps dramatically, "Oh no! I got a huge stain on you!"
You only laugh and reply "It's okay." again. "Although, I do wonder why your little critters are seeking me out."
"I don't know neither..." Gekko admits himself. He scratches the back of his neck, pondering for a second, and you can't help but find it cute.
Your attention is ripped away by the blue edgy man behind you, "It looks like you pissed yourself."
"Oh shut up." You roll your eyes.
Gekko takes the opportunity to leave, but as soon as he steps out the door, as soon as he can't see you anymore, his thoughts decide to be rational, or irrational, as they are only about you. He was down bad.
☾⋆☆⋆☽
The main meeting was over. Gekko was set to join the next mission in Norway, and you were to stay in HQ. Maybe he was a little disappointed that you weren't coming with, but at least you wouldn't be in any danger. He was glad about that, if anything.
Groups divided to talk, really, about anything. That was one of the main things Gekko was surprised about. Everyone talked so freely. The atmosphere felt like one of his big family reunions.
But he wasn't talking to anyone. He was only looking.
You really were so cool. Everyone here was cool but he always seemed to be especially entranced with you. He could stare at you like a painting on the wall, except that was the problem. He could never approach you on his own.
His buddies, however, seemed to have no problem with it. "Dizzy, wait!" He whisper-shouts.
Dizzy ignores him and curls into a ball and rolls your way, a new technique Gekko'd never seen before from her, knocking at your feet until you pick her up. You continue your conversation like it's nothing and mindlessly pet at the critter in your arms. Gekko can do nothing but watch.
He was jealous of his own buddies for being able to approach you so easily, but it was also heartwarming to see you regard them so fondly.
Reyna leans on the wall next to Gekko, letting her heels announce her presence. "Te ves estupido."
(You look stupid.)
Gekko's eyebrows scrunch up, "What the fuck, Reyna?"
She only laughs, "Es la verdad."
(It's true.)
He scoffs and turns back away from her, and it's only natural his eyes fall on you. "Is it Dizzy you're looking at, or him?"
"Him?"
Reyna continues to read him like an open book. It's the way it says it–him, so softly, like speaking is the first thing on his mind and like staring at you is his only priority–that answers her question.
"For your sake, let's say both."
"Reyna?" Gekko perks up, all shy and timid.
It was interesting to her. "Hm..?"
"Do you know why they stick around him so much?"
Reyna knew what he was talking about, who "they" was and especially who "he" was. It was endearing how he trusted her with these things. But she had already told him before. She wasn't good help with these sorts of things. "You're the critter handler."
"Right..."
"But," She still had a hypothesis, "las mascotas hacen lo que sus dueños les muestran." She sends a wink somewhere ahead and Gekko takes a look, only to find you offering the two of them a smile. He almost melts. Thank God you don't know Spanish.
(Pets do what their owners show them.)
"Reyna...¡para de echarle leña al fuego!" He whines.
(Stop adding fuel to the fire!)
"Aww," Reyna coos, almost like she's going to pull his cheeks, "no huyas de las oportunidades, cariño."
(Don't run from opportunities, dear.)
☾⋆☆⋆☽
Pets do what their owners show them. What did that mean? Dizzy liked to sleep, he supposes so does he. Sometimes Wingman tries to sneak a drink from his boba. The whole bunch of them have a lot of energy, and he knows others see that in him. But why would she bring that up now? I do wonder why they always seek me out... Oh no. They liked you too, which really did confirm he had a crush.
"Ay, diosito, cómo te he provocado..?" Gekko groans, sinking his head further into his pillow. A knock to his door. Thinking it's just Neon, or maybe even Phoenix, he shouts "Come in!" from the bed.
However, instead of an electrically charged or pyrokinetic agent, it's you. "Hi, Gekko."
"Oh!" He straightens up on the bed.
Either his surprise woke them or they sensed your presence; whatever the case, his little buddies wake from their slumber in his discarded globule bag. They pounce on you harmlessly. Thrash climbs up to your shoulder, Dizzy flies atop your head and Wingman hugs your legs. Mosh obediently stays a globule on the table, but he threatens to roll off the edge. You catch him before he can create a pit.
"Hey guys. How are ya?" You push Wingman onto just one of your legs so you can wobble towards his bed, which is of course still quite the task, but you finish it all the same.
You plop yourself down next to him on the bed and, he doesn't notice it but, he scoots closer. "Reyna wanted me to check up on you. Said she was worried."
"..why?" He had a feeling he knew why, but he asks anyway.
"It's almost eleven."
Gekko glances at the alarm clock on his table. "Oh."
"I'll admit," You begin with a small laugh to mask your evident anxiousness, "I was quite worried too."
"I'm so sorry."
"You don't have to apologize all the time, you know." Your growing smile lights one up on his face as well. "Well, let's see, do you have a fever? Did you not get enough sleep last night?"
"No, I–"
Despite him denying it, you press a hand to his cheek, then his forehead. "My, you're burning up."
He pushes your hand away, "It's not what you think."
"Really?" But you bring it back up to monitor the heat on his cheeks.
"I assure you, I'm fine." He nods, taking your hand in his so that you don't continue to raise the temperature on his cheeks in a way you don't even notice. He's never seen you so worried before. Usually, you were so laid back and chill. This was a new side of you he didn't expect, and a part of him felt warmed by the thought that you cared for him so dearly.
"Do I need to tell Brim to take you out of the upcoming mission?" You stress, fighting his hold that keeps you away.
"Really! I'm all good!" He squeezes your hand to reassure you. "You don't have to worry about me."
You huff but nod, "Okay, fine. But if you are bedridden tomorrow, don't say I didn't try."
☾⋆☆⋆☽
He's glad, for once, that one of his buddies doesn't lead him to you. Instead, he finds his way to you on his own, whether for good or for worse. It was just a crush that he wanted to end. But he was prolonging it when he was with you, alone; although, he couldn't just avoid you. He really did want to be around you. It's a dilemma.
"What are you doing here?" It was mid-afternoon. Lunch was over two hours ago and he was sure he saw you there, and not only because his gaze always drifted towards you like a magnet.
"Oh, hey Gekko." Your voice is cheerful as you greet him. "It was meant to be a surprise, but I'm baking cookies... or cupcakes. Can't decide."
"For who?" He curiously asks.
"Celebration for after the mission, so everyone, but I guess... you."
His face quickly lights up with surprise, "Oh." Then a grin makes itself present on his lips. He's trying to hide it, but he can't and you spot it.
You chuckle, and a little shame climbs up his cheeks and surely paints them pink. "You're welcome to help, if you're not actually sick. "
"I told you, I'm not," He shakes his head with a laugh, "and I'd like that."
"What do you like?" You move to maneuver the cabinets much more familiar to you, grabbing flour from the top ones and eggs from the fridge and milk and all. "Between cupcakes and cookies, I mean."
In his growing anxiousness, Wingman sneaks out of his bag. His eyes remain on you, watching your every move. He could definitely mess this up if he wasn't careful. "Cupcakes. More toppings that way."
"You're right."
Out of the corner of his eye, he spots Wingman hopping and trying to grab the flour off the counter. "Hey, Wingman..." He warns sternly, "no te atrevas."
(don't you dare.)
You push the flour out of the little man's reach and play along, "You mess things up, I'll mess you up!"
Gekko follows your lead. He hasn't really baked anything before, except for the cake boxes at the grocery store. He was... out of his field of expertise. Wingman, too, tries to help, and he has half the mind to put him back in the globule pack but you seemed to be enjoying his presence. It could be worse. Wingman was his only buddy that had actual appendages.
Everything you called for, he reached for. Cinnamon? Vanilla extract? Whatever it was, he looked for it, even if he didn't always know where it was; unless Wingman beats him to it.
Sometimes neither of them could find it, though, which meant you had to go for it yourself. The space between the counters was limiting, hardly enough comfortable space for one person. Maneuvering around each other should've been hard, but you had a simple solution.
You take his hips in your warm hold and pull him gently to the side, then walk past him. It only takes a few seconds. Usually he wouldn't allow himself to be so malleable, nor would he let this pass; but you were you. It got him quite confused but also so enamored. Your touch absolutely brought tingles up his side. It was driving him crazy.
"Three trays." You announce as you close the oven. "Good enough, yeah?"
"..yeah." His eyes trace your figure as you stand up proudly, hands on your hips. You were beautiful. Your smile shined brightly, your eyes crinkled with the same joy, and he couldn't keep his eyes away.
"Gekko?"
You were just lovely.
"Mateo?"
At the use of his actual name, Gekko shakes his trance off. "Yeah?" His voice breaks and he fights the urge to shrink in on himself. He clears his throat, "What did you say?"
"They'll be ready in about twenty minutes, so we've got time for a break."
He nods his head slowly, "Okay. What do you want to do?"
"I don't know, I–oh no." Your face drops suddenly.
He follows your petrified gaze down, down at himself. "What? Oh." His waist was absolutely covered in flour the shape of your handprints that stood out stark white against his lilac tee.
"I am so sorry, Mateo." You place a hand over your mouth, "I–"
He pulls it down before you can cover your lips with inedible flour, "It's okay. Just like that stain on your pants a few days ago, right?"
You laugh, comforted by how quickly he got to consoling you. "Yeah, alright." But you lift your hand to show him one last thing, his fingers stained in flour from holding yours. "Oopsie."
Gekko bursts out laughing, and you laugh along with him.
Wingman hops up and down–for a little guy he jumps real high–to catch your attention. Much to Gekko's dismay, you give it to him.
"Who's such a good little helper? You are, Wingman, right? You are~"
He doesn't know whether to be jealous or happy.
☾⋆☆⋆☽
"Mateo, hey!"
He loves the way his names roll off your tongue. It feels sweet, like the cupcakes you'd made together, even if he'd promised to hold off and eat them after the mission. You said so perfectly, too, without even the slight hint of an English accent. He loves the smile you send his way too and how cute you look waving at him for attention; but you hadn't gotten his attention, after all. He wasn't listening, too focused on your face.
"Mateo?" You call again.
He clears his throat, right, yeah, you were saying something, "What's up?"
"Good luck." You nod encouragingly. "Not that you'll need it."
"Well, I still appreciate it." He offers a grin, "Thank you. I'll make sure to come back in one piece," He doesn't know where the sudden courage comes from, but he winks and says, "just for you, of course."
You shake your head with a laugh, "You better."
☾⋆☆⋆☽
It was the most beautiful, no, one of the most beautiful things he'd ever seen in his life.
The mission went successfully, so there was some extra time for perusing an actually inhabited and not evacuated part of Norway. He had no idea this would be here, this tulip field. Huge rows of different colored flowers shined under the golden hour of the setting sun. The ship was coming soon and he'd have to leave soon, and normally he wouldn't even want to leave, but now he only wished you were here to see this with him.
He snaps a pic and turns around, but not before a thought occurs to him. There were so many... thousands of them. Surely a single pink tulip wouldn't be missed?
☾⋆☆⋆☽
"Dios, te amo... te amo tanto." The cupcakes taste so good! They made him want to kiss you right now, so badly, but he knew he couldn't, even with his mind half-drunk off sweetness.
(God, I love you. I love you so much.)
You raise a brow and Gekko is so glad you don't know Spanish because it almost looked like you knew what he said. "What does that mean?"
But he's still petrified, "Don't worry about it..."
"It means the cupcakes are great, sort of." Reyna places a hand on Gekko's shoulder as she settles down next to him, a cupcake in her other hand. It's decorated with dark chocolate, which is certainly fitting. "Cuidate, Mateo."
"Right..." Gekko shakes her off.
"How was the mission?" You ask.
"Oh, it went great," He perks up in his seat, "everyone did so well. Harbor's water powers were cool as always and Skye didn't flash anybody! Wingman even got to plant the spike."
"Mateo did a significantly good job." Reyna states, patting his head in an attempt to ruffle his hair up, "He deserves some praise... but he also made some funny mistakes."
"Really? What'd he do?"
Gekko can only sit there and listen to Reyna make fun of him endearingly while you listened to her every word. He chimes in with his own jokes about the situation as a way to lighten his own shame.
"Nuh-uh, Reyna, you know I–"
"Almost tumbled down the steps?" She smirks, "You could've squashed Mosh into a pit."
He groans and hides his face with his hands. His mistakes were bound to run out soon enough, right? No more of listening to this anymore. Except they aren't over yet when Gekko perks back up.
You wrap a comforting arm around Gekko's shoulders and it causes him to stiffen up. You, on the other hand, seem so nonchalant; but he can tell with the way you glance at him that you're nervous too, maybe over him. It's reassuring.
It also means the jokes come piling in, now that he's comfortable.
☾⋆☆⋆☽
The tulip in his hand is red, a deep pigmented red. If he'd have thought about it–or maybe he didn't even know about the language of flowers–he would've googled its meaning. Red tulips are a sign of confession and love, much like roses, but, to him, roses would've been way too romantic. It was just a little crush, after all.
Your friendship was blossoming. He was finally becoming more comfortable around you. What if it went wrong? What if this would mess everything up?
"Mateo?"
It was just a little crush. It could still pass; but Reyna had told him not to let opportunities go to waste, and she always had objective suggestions for him.
He turns to you with a jump, placing the tulip on the hallway table behind him and hiding it with his body. "Hey."
But he didn't have it in him.
"Something wrong?"
"No." He shakes his head, "Everything's fine."
Gekko's buddies had a deep love for you, and, unlike Gekko, they didn't have shame. Wingman pops out of his pack without even alerting him. He made sure to be sneaky and quiet, but Gekko's attention was entirely on you, so he didn't have much to worry about.
Wingman snatches the tulip from the table with a little hop, and the "plop" sound of his feet making contact with the ground again alerts Gekko, but by the time he looks down he's already at your feet.
"Bloop." Wingman holds the flower high.
"Hey, little guy, this for me?" You bring him up with one arm, taking the tulip with the other. "Don't think you got this all on your own. This yours, Mateo?"
"Yeah." He admits.
"Thank you." He watches you attentively, waiting to see a big, drastic reaction. "A red tulip..."
"Listen, I–" He clears his throat, preparing himself only briefly in his mind. "Te quiero, tanto y no tengo ni la primera idea como decirtelo, pero sí puedo decir que tu eres increible y tan, tan bonito. Soy tan estupido que te lo estoy diciendo en español y tu no sabes lo que estoy diciendo y estara muy dificil decirtelo otra vez en ingles. Mierda." The words fall out his mouth like tumbling dominos.
(I like you, so much, and I have no idea how to tell you, but I can tell you that you are incredible and so so beautiful. I am so stupid that I'm telling you this in Spanish and you don't know what I'm saying and it'll be so hard to tell you in English. Shit.)
"Increible, ha?" You snicker, shaking your head, "Quiero que sepas que te encuentro muy bonito tambien."
(Incredible, huh? I want you to know that I find you very beautiful too.)
What? "Tu sabes español?!"
(You know Spanish?!)
"Sí, amor."
(Yes, love.)
"Dios santisimo..." Gekko could melt into a puddle right then and there. He covers his face with his hand and breathes out a sigh, but it's one of relief.
(God...)
"Ah, y," You begin, placing Wingman down and cupping his cheek, in the process moving his hand away from his beautiful face. "te quiero tambien."
(Oh, and, I like you too.)
Maybe he rushes, but he can't hold back with the warmth your hand brings to his face. He kisses you, and even if it was rushing, you kiss him back. It's nothing and everything like he's imagined at the same time and he can't have enough.
