I pressed the buzzer and watched the bustling streets of the city as I waited for Mabel to let me into the building. The Arconia had always been quite a sight, which was saying something, given all the unique buildings in the city. I could see why Mabel enjoyed it here, despite all the crazy stuff that had gone on here.
āCome on up,ā Mabelās voice came through the crackly, outdated speaker. A moment later, the gate clicked, and I made my way into the neat courtyard. Now for the trek up to the 14th floor. I had to wait for the elevator for a minute or two, as one of them was broken. Not that I would want to use it anyway; Mabel had told me about how āCoBroā star Ben Glenroy had died in it only 2 weeks before.
The door to Mabelās apartment was slightly ajar when I got there, so I just let myself in. She was sitting on the floor, taping up some boxes.
āFinally, youāre here,ā She said with a smile of relief. āThanks again for helping out.ā
āOf course, thatās what friends are for,ā I replied. āBesides, itās better than getting your friends Abbott and Costello to do it.ā
Mabel laughed a bit. āNot that Iād ask them anyway. Things are a little rocky at the moment.ā
āMurder blues?ā
āItās turning Oliver into⦠well, I donāt know, just an uptight prick. Heād rather the murder go unsolved than have it be one of his cast members.ā
I sat down across from her and started taping up one of the many boxes strewn across the floor. āSounds like Oliver. Determined as hell about the wrong thing.ā I had only met Mabelās senior friends once, but it wasnāt too hard to clock Oliver as the ambitious, mostly self-serving member of the trio.
āOn a lighter note, how are things with Tobert? Is he the one youāre going to move in with?ā I teased, wiggling my eyebrows a bit.
āThings with Tobert are fine. Iām not ready to move in with him yet, though,ā Mabel said. āI want to stay in the building until I find out who killed Ben, so Iām gonna stay with Theo for a bit. Heās actually going to come up and help as well, he should be here any minute.ā Theo was one of Mabelās Arconian friends I hadnāt met yet, although she had told me plenty about him. It had taken her a bit to not actively distrust him, after everything with her friend Zoe years before, but they were friends now.
Only a few minutes later, there was a knock on the door. Mabel got up and went to open it, and a moment later, she walked in with Theo trailing behind her. He looked around at the somewhat deconstructed apartment, then looked at me and smiled.
āY/N, this is Theo,ā Mabel said. āTheo⦠Y/N.ā She signed at the same time, which I hadnāt realized she had known how to do. Theo must have been deaf, then. I turned back to him.
āHi,ā I signed, and he signed āhiā back in a distracted manner. āEverything ok?ā
āYeah, yeah, all good,ā He said, seeming to snap out of a trance. āJust excited to meet one of Mabelās friends, thatās all. I was beginning to worry that she only spent her time with old guys.ā I laughed, and Mabel rolled her eyes, although she had a hint of a smile on her lips.
āIs this all today is gonna be? You two making fun of my questionable friendship choices?ā She asked.
āYes, but you signed up for it when you invited me over to help,ā I said as I picked up a box. āShall we?ā
āIf it keeps you two quiet, absolutely.ā The three of us started to put things in boxes, under Mabelās guidance. Good progress was made with all of us working on things.
āSo, howād you meet Mabel?ā Theo signed as we worked.
āHigh school,ā I replied. āShe was the artsy girl who helped paint the set for some theater production I was in, and I was the new kid in school who was in the play and also looking for friends. We bonded pretty quickly after that.ā
āMabel is really good at art,ā Theo said. āI bet you were quite the actor.ā
āI was about as any teenage girl can be at it,ā I replied with a laugh. āWhich is not very good. But it was fun.ā I picked up the box I had just finished packing and put it with the rest of the already filled boxes in the corner of the room. I turned back to see Theo quickly looking away, a slight red tinge on his cheeks. I felt my own cheeks go warm in response. Theo was attractive, that was for sure. Mabel didnāt talk about him often, but from what she had said, he was the quiet, dependable type. Clearly, though, he also had a good sense of humor.
We went back to packing, as it was hard to pack boxes and talk at the same time. Before the three of us knew it, it was midafternoon. Everything had been put into boxes, and at least somewhat organized. Mabel had hired movers to actually come up and get the boxes and take them to a storage facility , although they werenāt coming until two days later, so our day was done.
āThanks for coming to help, guys,ā Mabel said as we stood there, piles of boxes surrounding us.
āNo problem,ā Theo replied. āIāll see you on Thursday?ā
āYeah, see you then,ā Mabel replied. āY/N, are you coming out Saturday night?ā
āYeah, Iāll be there,ā I replied. āBye.ā Theo and I left the apartment and waited for the elevator to make its way up to our floor.
āSo⦠are you hungry?ā Theo asked as we stood there, waiting.
āStarving,ā I replied. āPacking boxes is tough work.ā
āThereās this nice diner down the road. The Pickle Diner. If you want⦠we could go.ā He fidgeted with his hands nervously.
I felt my heartbeat pick up a bit. āYeah, sure, that sounds nice.ā
āThen itās a date.ā That only made me get more flustered. I had only just met Theo and here I was, getting all flustered just by him talking to me.
The diner was only a few blocks away. Perhaps it was because I was hungry, but the smell of the diner was heavenly when we walked in. There was an open booth in the corner, so we made our way to that one and got comfy.
āThis place has great sandwiches,ā Theo said as we looked at the menu. It was hard to choose one, but I finally settled on a pesto sandwich that looked tasty. The waitress took our order, then I turned to Theo.
āSo, Theo, Mabelās told me a bit about you, but you know her. Sheās not one for lavish descriptions.ā Theo laughed at that. āWhat do you do for work?ā
āAt the moment, I work at a library,ā He said. āItās a temporary thing, but I donāt mind it. What about you? What do you do for work?ā
āIām a marketing director for a fashion line,ā I replied.
āSounds like fun.ā The waitress came up with our drinks. āMabel tells me youāre quite a piano player, too.ā
āShe tends to exaggerate that fact,ā I said with a smile. āI know how to play, Iām not anything special.ā
āIām sure youāre great, although I know Iām not much of an expert,ā Theo said, and I laughed. He had a good sense of humor.
The two of us continued to talk, and I learned about Theoās love of CoBro, reading, and walks. Theo was easy to talk to; it was as if we were old friends catching up after a long time apart. There was plenty to learn about each other, and the conversation never dulled. By the end of the date, I was more attracted to him than I had been before. Theo was someone I wanted to see again, that was for sure.
āThat hit the spot,ā I said as we walked out of the diner. āThank you for bringing me here, Iāll definitely have to come back.ā
āNot without me, I hope,ā Theo said, and I nodded, my cheeks turning pink. āWell⦠Iāll talk to you soon?ā
āYeah, talk to you soon,ā I replied. Theo started to turn to walk back to his apartment, and before could fully turn, I quickly closed the gap between us and pulled him into a kiss. I had never done that with someone before, so quickly after just meeting them only that day, but the attraction was there, stronger than it had been with anyone. Theo seemed momentarily surprised, but then he kissed back with enthusiasm.
āSorry,ā I said after we both pulled away, each one of us smiling. āI had to.ā
āItās alright,ā He said, his face turning red. āThat was nice.ā I nodded in agreement. āIāll talk to you soon.ā
āYeah, talk to you soon,ā I replied. We went our separate ways. I couldnāt help but smile as I walked down the busy street. I had only known Theo for a single day, but I thought that it would be easy to fall for Theo, and the growing attraction to each of us wasnāt going to go away any time soon.
