Penny Candy 2006 Acrylic on Wood Panel 24"x48" Private Collection Paris Penny Candy was inspired by memories of the "Corner Store" on my Grandmother's street in North Philly. I would sweep her front stoop for a dime. Ten cents could buy a candy coated heaven for a kid back then. Squirrel Nuts, shoe strings and Swedish Fish, all for a penny each. Newkirk Street was wild in the 70's. Shoot outs and gang wars (like westside story) were a regular occurrence. I recall on several occasions being yanked into neighbor's homes and told to lay on the floor until the shooting was done. I also remember that even though times were tough, most of the businesses in the neighborhood were owned and run by Mom and Pop. To some it may have been a ghetto, but it was a community nonetheless. Here's to a neighborhood institution that is no more, The Penny Candy Store.
