Question to anyone and everyone: tips to help pre k children with ASD?
What tips would you give a new pre k teacher to help them handle challenging scenarios with children with ASD? I wasn’t given any training specific to this. I want to help these children in productive ways that also keep them feeling safe.
For instance, a child who dreads washing their hands (but we aren’t allowed to provide wet wipes or hand sanitizer.) What do? I’ll usually wash my hands with them and talk to them the whole time and explain everything. “I’m going to give you soap now, I know you don’t like it, but it will get rid of the germs. When you go potty, you get germs on your hands that can make you sick. I don’t want you to get sick because I care about you.” They will cry the whole time, but go through the motions. Should I change any of this?
If you’re a teacher or a person with ASD I’d appreciate any tips, relevant experiences, etc.
