Your story and what you have to say is not over yet. #reminders #tattoo
The problem with being a writer is that you have to be your characters.
You can’t write a charming character by saying they’re charming, you actually need to be charming and write them charming dialog. You can’t just state somebody is smart, you need to write smart things for them to say and do.
It’s REALLY HARD.
Thank god I’m infinitely charming and intelligent
Question 1
Part of the questionnaire from @legit-writing-tips. This will be the start of something I attempt to work on every day.
What does your writing process look like?
I do a lot of thinking in the shower. Mostly about characters and small micro scenes, interactions between two people, to a situation, an event.
From there, I’ve always felt the need to physically write my work down on paper. Going straight to the computer is a death sentence, because the internet is filled with awful distractions like Netflix. So I sit at my corner desk, which is not actually in a corner and is turned so that it hides me from the rest of the world, and I take out a notebook.
Depending on the writing, the notebook might change. I’m working on a project that, once I finish a notebook, I send it to the person that gave it to me. But this only applies to some of them and it’s a project that’s taking me longer than I thought it would. Regardless.
If it’s just a one-shot, or if it’s relevant to the notebook recipient, it’ll go in there before I transfer it to my laptop. If not, I have a nice little notebook from @because-it-mattered that gets the brunt of the writing for now.
I pretty much only use a certain type of pen, and my handwriting is pretty damn awful in that first incarnation of the work. I often can’t read my own writing, which is a terrible practice. But I do a lot of editing in the transfer from paper to digital, so sometimes those sentences and words don’t even make it.
I haven’t worked in long form for a very long time, so the first step in the editing process comes after the transfer, and I’ll go through it with a fine-tooth comb, first looking for structural errors or missing information, something that makes the story feel incomplete, like it’s missing something important. Then I focus on words and phrasing and really making the characters feel whole and individual, a part of me, but also a part of something greater.
And then the work pretty much just hangs out forever in limbo!
