315 | Compilation of some of my favorite October posts 🍂
For me, it's definitely The Night Circus. Especially this time of year, because of the autumnal vibes of all the witches, carnivals, and candy apples. Plus, the Cirque de Rêves did start in October! Seen here with my current knitting WIP, a big red wrap prefect for any rêveur 😍

Just One More Page challenge: Old favorite. The Night Circus, of course, but I'm so excited for Erin Morgenstern's new book too!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Something Wicked October: The Craft- Modern Day Witch. While it's definitely more historical fiction, the end does lead us to some modern day witchery!
January 13: Classic
It's hard to get more classic than Shakespeare, isn't it? I couldn't tell you which I love more: reading Shakespeare or seeing it performed live.
What's your favorite classic book?
Imagine a fae who is just so mad about the idea of lying, like, I have spent a thousand years studying the subtle arts of deceit, weaving my spells of glamour and misdirection, and you, human, can just stand there and
say things
that aren’t true
“So yeah, I’m, uh, bright purple.”
“But you’re not! That’s not even plausible! How can you just - you are not even puce. Fine. Fine. Another one.”
“Are you sure? You seem pretty mad.”
“I assure you I am wholly and terribly sane.”
“Heh, you know that’s not the kind I meant.”
“Hssssss.”
“Haha, fine, fine. I’m … a dragon.”
“nO YOU’RE NOT THOUGH–”
Fall is here!!! And October’s BPC starts in just one week. 🍂🎃🍁🎃🍂
Okay, so here’s the deal. This is, in essence, like every other book challenge out there. There’s a list of prompts. Fill ‘em and have fun! But I’m expanding on the theme because what better time to be ‘evil’ than the run-up to Halloween?
Rules and Hopes
1. Post something bookish for every prompt that inspires you (between October 1 and 31). This can be a photo, rant, book review, gifset, fancast, video, dramatic reading, etc. Get creative, have fun, and maybe challenge yourself a little.
Every five posts, you’ll level up one Spook Factor.
Spook Factor
1-4: cat 5-9: ghost 10-14: zombie 15-19: vampire 20-24: werewolf 25-30: witch 31-34: pirate 35+: superhero
2. You can also go Trick-or-Treating! Some of the items (see below) are general challenges for the month (like how many books you read), some relate to types of posts, and some are a little odder. They’re all meant to encourage creativity and italicized items are stackable. (If you post one cat photo, that’s good. If you post three cat photos, that’s better.) Any post with the #bookoween hashtag will be checked against these lists whether you try for them or not, and you do not have to work them into the prompt posts. Extra posts are allowed and even encouraged!
3. On the evening of October 31, spilling into November 1 as needed, everyone who’s posted for the challenge will receive an ask stating their Spook Factor and the results of their Trick-or-Treating. For every Trick you do, you’ll get either amusingly tragic backstory or trash-tier Halloween loot like toothbrushes. For every Treat, you get an unspecified amount of candy.
Example: You are a vampire who limps due to a freak bouncy castle accident. You have two Snickers bars, a Tootsy pop, a Butterfingers, an O’Henry, a box of raisins, two boxes of M&Ms, and a ball of caramel corn.
4. Post everything with the #bookoween hashtag. Yes, it’s been used before. No, it hasn’t been used in two years. Therefore, it’s fair game. (Mwahahaha.) If you correctly identify all 22 prompt sources, you also get a thing in the Halloween ask. To keep this fair, please send your answers as asks or through the messenger. If you spoil it for everyone, you also get a thing (and the angry glares of all booklr, so maybe don’t).
DRAGON KNITTING!!!
@rannadylin if you’re into that
Thousands of years ago, somebody looked at a flock of sheep and went, “well, they aren’t cold.”
Guys. Guys.
It’s so much better than that.
So once upon a time, goats and sheep were essentially the same animal, and all of them had hair. Now, you can do some stuff with hair, but you can’t do a lot, so mostly sheep/goats were kept for meat and milk.
Except then a mutation showed up, and some of the sheep/goats had WOOL instead. And someone realized that 1. you could spin that shit, and 2. then you could WEAVE that shit, and 3. IT GREW BACK.
Generations of selective breeding ensued. Two visibly discrete species emerged, one primarily for meat and milk, and the other primarily for wool. They also have different behavioural characteristics, because independence was not helpful in a sheep, so it was bred out of them. Sheep remain one of the few non-draft animals that we farm even though they are not delicious.
The most similar part of sheep and goats that remains today is their skeleton. On an archaeological dig, you find THOUSANDS of bones and bone fragments that can only be identified as “sheep/goat”. It’s incredibly frustrating, but also kind of hilarious after you’ve spent enough time in the sun.
ANYWAY, human beings have always been smart and surprisingly good at changing nature because they want a sweater.
The entire knitting community needs to hear this.
Oh man I’m so glad I can add this to my arsenal of responses to people who say all GMOs are made of poison.
In zooarchaeology, sheep/goat is a valid category and no one will press you further on the issue.
