I just saw that Queen of Katwe made less than $3M in the US in its opening weekend. I’m so disappointed. I’m sure the expectations weren’t particularly high but it’s so important for us to support films directed by WOC and about black people. It also happens to be an incredible film. It will be worth your two hours and your $11. I promise this.

Hollywood continues to whitewash our stories and/or center stories around white leads under the guise of financial draw. I want us to prove that films do not need white faces to make money.

This film is the anti-white savior film. It’s both real and hopeful. Notably, it has dark skinned actors filling out this excellent cast. This really matters. It matters to see dark-skinned people with natural hair. It’s not too often that stories about us in the diaspora are not partially focused on light-skinned people.

Please see this if you can make time and if you can afford it.

Literally Lupita is an angel and the movie has such a great cast but you don’t see people speaking out for others to go watch it but rapist Nate Parker has all kinds of celebrities speaking out for his trash ass movie. Fuck Birth of a Nation and go see Queen of Katwe y'all
