Crits, Feedback, & Praise on New UI
Hello! I made this post on my FR account (find me as Samdeer or 324024) but i figured people here may be interested as well!
------------------------------------------------
Morning! I want to preference that while this is more of a ramble post, I am a graphic designer! While i do have experience in UI/UX, it isn't my specialty. So please keep in mind most of this is coming from a more broad POV on the topic. Also because I am using the slate theme, most of my critiques will be from using that specific theme.
PRAISES
I first want to say thank you to staff for releasing this unfinished. I do mean that genuinely as it helps us as users/players pick out what we don't like without so much effort being put forth. It's a lot easier to go back and fix things that users have issues with! I also do appreciate the dark mode, especially slate, as someone with very sensitive eyes.
The new icons for buttons are ADORABLE!!! I literally love them so much <3
Despite what I've seen (both here and tumblr) I actually really like the energy bar's general look and feel now.
THANK YOU FOR NEW SKIN PREVIEW!!!!

CRITIQUES/FEEDBACK
I feel bad that this section is probably going to be A LOT longer and I'm sure staff are more than aware of most things I mention here. However, I still feel it's important to talk about. Most of these things are small so I will try to keep them in sections.
CONTRAST While the slate theme is good, personally a couple things still feel VERY bright. The energy on dragons being an example. Blue and yellow being nearly exact opposite colors can have effects such as appearing way more bright than intended. Here is what it looks like atm
Here is a contrast that feels more relaxing to my eyes!
FONTS & VISUAL HIERARCHY This is probably my biggest gripe with the update and why I think so many users are being quick to point out the site feels "corporate". Sans-serif fonts are the quickest way to being labelled as this. As someone who really likes sans-serif… that sucks! LOL
Jokes aside, the use of sans-serif everywhere feels a bit much. My eyes don't know where to go or land. Here is a quick map I made of where my eyes go when viewing my lair. Here is my lair
Here is a map of my visual path, or at least an attempt.
Due to that ONE button being so bright (idk why, unsure if it's on my end or FR's! I did clear my cache as well) my eyes start there. The lack of serifs on titles, or at least more visual difference compared to all other fonts or colors within the playing space, is what makes a user's eyes confused.
This is most likely why people are reporting headaches when experiencing the new UI.
Well, that with spacing issues regarding the top icons.
It kind of feels as though they're sitting more at the bottom when they're supposed to be in the middle? Paired with the spacing between these icons and the top bar makes it feel uneven.
However this post negated the issue! And I think staff should consider adding some type of outline or color such as this user ( @/Hazeledpoppy ) did.
Also looking at my lair it feels more left-heavy than before? Not sure if that's because it did actually change or due to the new visual hierarchy it feels different.
As kind of a misc. thing, I like having commas on numbers now but having "k" after it gets too long makes that improvement dead in the dirt. Many users, myself included, have a hard time with numbers visualized in both ways (no commas or using letter abbreviations) and I think finding something different would be beneficial. Though, at the time of writing, the only thing I can think of is making sure the UI for those elements scale with the number, or, make the commas a little smaller. -----
FINAL THOUGHTS
Overall, this is an improvement above all else. So much of the old site was VERY hard to look at due to how small many important elements were. Most of the changes here are relatively small in comparison to if they completely wiped out the old site and had to go back. What we're seeing here is the usual padding and contrast edits that need to be done. The most difficult (or what I feel would be, as I don't know the code of FR) would be font changes. I saw a couple posts that even the more decorative font isn't very serif. I'm unsure why the team went this way but I'm asking them to PLEASE use serif fonts to help with the visual discrepancies and to have displays feel more grounded.
I know there is probably stuff I didn't mention here but I felt focusing on the more main issues of what I have knowledge in personally was important. And also because I'm unsure of what's visual glitches or leftovers from the old site (like the quote bar still being red and beige on the slate theme?)
I appreciate the team for all of their efforts into this UI revamp. It is honestly one of the better ones I've come across purely for the fact that they are taking time to take in feedback. There are improvements to be done but that is expected. Thank you staff for being one of the most responsive sites when it comes to feedback from your users

THIS POST IS ABOUT FLIGHT RISING.SORRY
FLIGHT RISING REFACTOR: No, you're not going back.
I am seeing a lot of people ask for a toggle or a way to go back to the old site design, in a way that implies such a thing should be easy to implement. It does sound easy to implement. We have three different colour modes we can switch between, right? We can go between mobile view and wide view? They have all the old code and assets, why can't they just let people pick in their settings to look at the old site again? It's not how it works. It doesn't really matter what your feelings about the refactor are, and I'm not going to give my opinion on it here. I just want to help people understand what exactly happened yesterday and why it's pointless to ask for it to go back.
i. HOUSE
Imagine a house.
It's an old house. It's been around for a while. It was built many years ago, and it's creaky and weird but it's our house, and we like it. There's leaks and the wood is a little aged and it stands out in the block of modern flathouses, but it's still our house.
As much as we love this house, there are issues with the house. Not everybody can get into the house, or navigate in there while they're around. There are things about this house that we can't change while it's made of the same materials that it is.
This is a structural flaw inherent to the house. The house is two-storied. Not everyone can get to the second story. In terms of the site, there were features that were unfriendly for people with visual impairment, people who could only play on their phones, etc.
ii. DARK MODE & INTERFACE
What did the old site look like? Why couldn't we have dark mode? The site was built out of layers and layers of PNGs made to look exactly like the light mode interface. All the NPC images, the old message and friend request icons, they all had white backgrounds or white fragments around the image because they were made assuming the site had a white background.
You couldn't just make the background of the site dark, because every single feature and image was created assuming the background was and would remain white.
This is why the logo was 'doubling' upon itself when the refactor first launched. The Flight Rising logo was a part of the banner image. Now the banner has been removed from the image and it's a floating element on the top of the page. This means it can react when the screen is made smaller. This is the equivalent of being able to move our lightswitch.
What did the site refactor do? Among other things, it decoupled all of these in-built images and features from each other. They added repaintable 'drywall' separate from the site's structure. This was necessary so the site could be reactive. For example, the iconic red sidebar of the page was actually a background PNG with a white part for the site content and a red sidebar, built into one single background image. Now these parts are defined with CSS, which you can think of as the 'wallpaper' of the site.
Every single surface of our house can be repainted now!
iii. Rollback or toggle to old site pls??
This is the refactored site. Among other things, it's been changed to improve accessibility for everyone. It now looks a little bit more like every other house on the block, but it is still the house that we live in. It no longer has two stories to climb. It has a ramp, so people can get in and out with ease. It even has some additional rooms, and renovation is still ongoing. (The contractors are still fixing up the washroom.)
Yes, the site is now designed to be mobile friendly. It no longer has a second floor. It's going to look 'designed for mobile' (people who can't access a second floor.) It's going to look more 'modern' (because the materials people use to build houses has changed.)
People are not used to the new site, of course. Can't they go back to the old house? Why has the door location changed? They keep walking into the walls of the new building. The light switch isn't there when they reach for it anymore. This is understandable. It takes some time to get used to living in a new house. It's a big change. You're going to be fumbling at where the light switch used to be for a long time.
You may even hate how the new house looks. You may not want to live in it anymore. But you can't go back to the old house. It isn't there anymore. You can't have a toggle, because the new site is the infrastructure uploaded to the site's servers, where it is built, and while you can change the colour of the wallpapers or even move the location of the light switch on your own, the house is rebuilt and you cannot 'toggle' it back to the old house.
The database calls, the HTML, the javascript on the front and backends of the site are completely different. The walls and shape of the house are different!
iv. Conclusion
There is a reason there are bug threads and feedback forums for the refactor. You still have time to request that the washroom is a different colour, or the ramp should actually be less steep because the people it's meant for can't actually use it as it was intended. But the ramp, and the accessibility features are here to stay. Don't ask for a toggle or for the site to go back the way it was. It will not be going back to the house built a decade ago. Instead, figure out why the old site worked for you while this one doesn't.
Maybe the ramp was intended for you, but you can't actually use it. Maybe the way the door is positioned now makes it actively harder for you to use the site, in ways other than 'I don't like where it is now and I want it to go back'. Ask for the site to be repainted and improved in ways that would help you.
It's a new day on Flight Rising! The new responsive layout and theme system have arrived!

I like how in flight rising lore wildclaws are vicious hunters who care only about strength but the only wildclaw npc is this guy
Okay you guys.
When you see “FR” written down on a post do you mentally read it as…
“Feeh-Arr”
“Fligh-righ”
what are you TALKING about
Im thomas / results
IF YOU PRIMARILY DO NOT SPEAK ENGLISH reply with what you mentally call it, if you have a nickname for it or something
YEEEEESSSSS!!!!!!!
FR staff mentioning that electronics n stuff are up to the 1920s makes me extremely tempted to make a steampunk/victorian-esque sub-clan/city and im just trying to stop myself from falling down that rabbithole
just imagine your usual victorian city except the guy in a three-piece suit just sort of goes “And sometimes we have dragons with eleven heads but that’s alright! :)”
And if you look to my left, we have a gorgeous, fully furnished 3 bedroom lair
